Pine Point NWT, gone but not forgotten

Pine Point, NWT, a community dismantled in 1988 after the lead/zinc mine it was based on closed down, remains dear to many people in the South Slave.

This year’s May long-weekend saw once again a contingent of people from Fort Resolution, Hay River and Fort Smith converge on the old town with camper vans, tents and quads, ready for a weekend celebration of all Pine Point used to be.

The Journal also visited the community, but not to take in the celebrations. Instead our cameras were focused on what remains – the parking lots, sidewalks and radio tower left intact, and one forgotten basement that the bulldozers and dump trucks somehow overlooked.
