15TuesdayMarch12201313032UU1AugustanaistheUniversityofAlbertainCamrosepathwaystoopportunityeducationspecialsectionSouthSlaveeducatorswinIndspireawardsByMEAGANWOHLBERGTwoofthe12educatorsselectedfromacrossthecountryforthebrandnewIndspireGuidingtheJour-neyeducationawardsjusthappentobefromthesamesmallschooldistrictintheNorthwestTerritoriestheSouthSlave.BrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendentoftheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilSSDECandDorisCamsellanAboriginallan-guageinstructoratHarryCamsellSchoolinHayRiverwerepraisedlastweekfortheircontributionstoim-provingindigenouseduca-tioninCanada.Kaulbackwhowasin-strumentalingettingtherst-everSouthSlaveyandChipewyandictionariesoffthegroundoverthepastsev-eralyearswasgiventheIn-digenousEducationPartnerawardwhichrecognizesanon-indigenouseducatordedicatedtofurtheringK-12indigenousstudentsuccess.Camsellisoneoftwore-cipientsoftheLanguageCultureandTraditionsawardforherworkwithstudentsintegratinglan-guagecultureandtradi-tionalknowledgeintoclass-roomlearning.Bothwillreceivethepres-tigiousawardsfromGover-norGeneralDavidJohnstononMar.15inCalgaryatagalafeaturingliveenter-tainmentbyhip-hopartistandAboriginaljournalistWabKinew.SSDECsuperintendentCurtisBrownsaidbothre-cipientsarewell-deservingofthenationalattention.Shehasbeenabridgebetweentwoculturesshow-ingstudentshowtraditionalknowledgeandskillscanbevaluableintodaysworldhesaidofCamsell.NotonlyissheateacherbutaninvaluableresourcepersonandagreatrolemodelforAboriginalstudents.Camsellwhoessentiallyspearheadedtheintroduc-tionofAboriginallanguageprogrammingintoHayRiv-ersschools22yearsagowasalsooneofthefound-ersoftheNWTDeneKedecurriculum.Camsellsaiditsimpor-tanttoincorporateAborig-inallanguagesintowhatispredominantlyanEnglishenvironment.LanguageiswhatgivesthemstudentstheirIrecognizethatlanguageisessentialtoonesbeingandthattoloseoneslanguagereallydoestakeapartofyouaway.Onceyouloseyourlanguagetheelementthattouchesyourheritageandtraditionsyoulosealittlebitofyourself.BrentKaulbackidentityandthatswhereself-esteemcomesinshesaid.TheresagreatdeclineinAboriginallanguagesduetotheWesternschoolsystemthatallstudentsareman-datedtoattend.Shededicatedtheawardtoherancestorsandthefuturegenerations.Wedontwalkaloneshesaid.LikewiseKaulbacksaidhehadhisteamattheschooldivisiontothank.Imabsolutelyhonouredbytheawardandtherecog-nitionIvereceivedfortheworkImdoingrecognizingthatImnottheonlyoneKaulbacksaid.IworkwithpeoplehereatSSDECwhocarejustasmuchandwhoarejustasexcitedbythesekindsofprojectsasIam.Thoughhehasonlybeenofciallyinvolvedinthepro-ductionofclassroomresourceslikebooksanddictionariessince2005Kaulbacksaidthepreservationandpromo-tionofAboriginallanguageshasbeenhispassionsincehiscareerbegan38yearsago.EvenwhenIwasteach-ingIalwaysworkedwiththeAboriginallanguageinstructorstobuildteacher-maderesourcesthatwecoulduseinourprograms.Ialwaysfounditfascinatingandinter-estingandIalwayswantedtohelphesaidrecallingthathebeganworkingonhisrstpictorialdictionarydur-ingsnowdayswhileteach-inginBakerLakein1980.BrowncalledKaulbacksworkintheschooldivisionoutstandingsayinghisac-complishmentsplacehimintherstrankofeducatorsworkingwithAboriginalstu-dentsinCanada.Kaulbackisresponsibleforthecreationofover200AboriginallanguagebooksandwastherstprincipaltoproducegraduatesatChiefSunriseSchoolontheHayRiverReserve.Tosayhesmadeasigni-cantcontributiontofurtheringK-12AboriginalstudentsuccessisabitofanunderstatementtosaytheleastBrownsaid.ThoughKaulbackadmitstohavingnonaturalafn-ityforstudyinglanguageshesaidworkingwitheldersandyouthtokeeplanguagealivehasbeenveryfullling.Irecognizethatlan-guageisessentialtoonesbeingandthattoloseoneslanguagereallydoestakeapartofyouawayhesaid.Onceyouloseyourlan-guagetheelementthattouchesyourheritageandtraditionsyoulosealittlebitofyourself.AndIseetheindividualswhoknowtheirlanguageandareproudpeo-pleandthatswhatIstriveforhelpingtomaintainthatinthecommunity.AnywaythatIcanhelptheAborigi-nallanguageinstructorsinthatwayIdo.AspartofthehonourbothKaulbackandCamsellwillhavetheopportunitytomeetotheraward-winningeduca-torsandsharebestpracticesataseriesofworkshopsdur-ingthenationalgatheringMar.15-16.Kaulbacksaidheisgreatlylookingforwardtolearningaboutothersuccessfulpro-gramsthroughoutCanadabutadmittedhisdistrictmayhavesomethingtoteachaswell.WhenIrealizethatthisisapan-Canadianawardandtwoofthe12arefromourlittledistrictittellsmeweredoingsomethingrighteventhoughwestillhavelotsofworktodohesaid.AlsorecognizedwereKelly-LeeAssineweTanyaLearyNeilDebassigeandLottieKeyeofOntarioCur-tisMichaelofNovaScotiaDeloriaManyGreyHorsesofAlbertaGordonMar-tellofSaskatchewanEricWilsonandBrandiVezinaofManitobaandKirstenBarnesofBC.BrentKaulbackandDorisCamsellwerenamedtwoof12inauguralrecipientsofthenewIndspireGuidingtheJourneyeducationawards.PhotoMeaganWohlberg
