PoliticsMilitary11TuesdayApril92013CanadianForcesbeginArcticsovereigntyoperationAnnualoperationbringsRangerspersonneltogetherfromacrossNorthByMEAGANWOHLBERGCanadianRangersandamyriadofarmedforcesper-sonnelareteamingupintheHighArcticthismonthforOperationNunalivutanex-ercisedesignedtocollectandreportinformationrelevanttoprotectingCanadasArc-ticsovereigntywhiletrain-ingpersonneltooperateintheharshweatherandterrain.Theannualexercisecoor-dinatedbyJointTaskForceNorthsince2006beganinResoluteBayNunavutonApr.2andwillcontinueuntiltheendofthemonth.ParticipantswillgooutonthelandandbyairtoconductpatrolsandreportbacktotheheadquartersinYellowknifewhowillinturncontactOt-tawawiththeirndings.Lt-Col.GlenMacNeilcommandingofcerfortheoperationsaidtheexerciseassistsinprovidingreassur-ancetotheCanadianpublicthattheCanadianArmedForcesCAFarereadyandabletoaddressathreatintheNorth.WhatthisshowsisthatwecangoupandoperateintheCanadianHighArcticatanytimeoftheyearinanytypeofconditionsandreallygowhereverweneedtoandthatshouldtellthepeopleoftheNorthandthepeopleofCanadathatifthereeverisasafetyorsecuritysituationintheNorththattheCanadianArmedForcesarepreparedtorespondtoithetoldTheJournalfromYellowknifebe-foreheadingofftoNunavut.Around120RangersandmembersoftheCAFfromallthreeterritorieswillbeplacedthroughouttheArcticArchipelagothroughoutthemonthfromResoluteBaynorthtoIsachsenNunavutandasfarwestasMouldBayintheNorthwestTerritories.MostoftheparticipantswillbecomingfromYel-lowknifewhereboththeJointTaskForceNorthandWeconductOperationNunalivutinthistimeofyearbecauseitcoincideswiththetimeofyearthatyoullseethehighestlevelofadventureac-tivityintheNorthhesaid.saidtheRangersalsoben-etfromtheexercisebothintermsofcollectingup-to-dateknowledgeontheregionandworkingwithmilitarypersonnel.Rangersareexpertsonlivingandsurviv-inginthesetypesofconditions.Peoplefromthesouthjustarent.Lt-Col.GlenMacNeil1stCanadianRangersPa-trolGroupheadquartersarestationedalongwiththeRoyalCanadianAirForceCC-138twinottersquad-ronwhichwillbejoiningtheoperation.Searchandrescuetechni-cianscooksandotheropera-torsfromthearmynavyandairforcewillalsobeaddedtothemix.MacNeilsaidpatrolswillbedonebyairandbyfootonlandandseaiceandwillheadouttoinspectexistinginfrastructurelikeairstripsandEnvironmentCanadasta-tionsinvariouslocationstoseethestatetheyreinandreportbackanyanomaliesoutontheland.ThisenablesustohaveagoodunderstandingofwhatisoutthereacrossourareaofoperationsacrosstheNorthifweeverneedtousethesefacilitiesintheeventofasafetyorsecurityemergencyforinstancehesaid.WhiletheoperationismorefocusedonreconnaissancethanpresenceMacNeilsaidthereisanelementofsearchandrescueinvolvedintheexerciseeachyear.Becauseweknowtheyrethereweconductouropera-tionatthesametimeandifweneedtoprovideassistanceinasearchandrescueopera-tionthenwevegotsomemem-bersoftheCanadianArmedForcesalreadypre-positionedintheHighArctic...DuringpastOperationNunalivutswehavedonejustthat.MacNeilsaiditsachallengeworkinginthehugebarrenregion-located1000-1500kmnorthoftheArcticCircleandspanningseveralhundredkilometresacrossindistance-intemperaturesbetween-20and-40CwhereweathercanchangewithoutnoticewhichiswhyitssoessentialtohaveRangersonboardfortheexercise.Rangersareexpertsonliv-ingandsurvivinginthesetypesofconditions.Peoplefromthesouthjustarent.TheyresmartandtheyretrainedtodothisbuttheRangersjusthavethisextrabitofaddedknowledgeandofcoursetheyhaveverydetailedknowledgeoftheareathattheyoperateinMac-Neilsaid.DespitetheirfamiliaritywiththeArcticMacNeilThatsatwo-waylearningstreetbecausetheRangersgettolearnmoreaboutourCanadianForcespersonnelandexchangeinformationandthatsalwaysapositiveexperiencehesaid.ParticipantsinOperationNunalivutwillheadoutontheirrstpatrolmidweek.Aclos-ingceremonyandparadewillmarktheendoftheoperationonApr.24inResoluteBay.PhotosCplShiloAdamsonCanadianForcesCombatCameraPhotoMCplKevinPaulChiefPettyOfcer2ndclassGlennParsonsCampSergeant-MajorofOperationNunalivut10assiststheDanishmili-tarysSIRIUSDogSledgepatrolintheset-upoftheirteaminpreparationforafamiliarizationpatrolduringOperationNunalivutin2010.MembersofthePortInspectionDiveTeamgetadivesitereadyontheDumbbellBayseaiceduringOperationNunalivut2010.PitisulaqUkuqtunnuaqiestheCanadianRangeragonhissnowmobileatEurekaNunavutduringOperationNunalivut2008.
