14TuesdayMay282013EducationMusicFortChipstudentslearnnativeuteformentalwellbeingPhotoDonnaCyprienADCSstudentsandteacheraideLyndaMartencentreareentertainedbyaworkshoponhowtoplaytheNativeAmericanutewithJacobHandelbackcentre.HealthWellnessViolenceAgainstWomenByRENEFRANCOEURAnewprojectstrivingtoendviolenceagainstwomeninnorthernAlbertahasre-ceivedasubstantialboostfromthefederalgovernmenttohelpitgetstarted.Thefederalministerrespon-siblefortheStatusofWomenRonaAmbroseannounced200000infundingforanupcomingcommunity-drivenprojectintheprovincesWa-basca-Desmaraisregionhometoapproximately3000peopleonMay16.TheHarpergovernmentiscommittedtoendingviolenceagainstwomenandgirlsincommunitiesacrossCanadaAmbrosesaidinapressre-lease.Iampleasedthatwearesupportingthisnewproj-ecttoensurethesafetyandsecurityofAboriginalgirlsinnorthernAlberta.TheEdmonton-basednon-protSocietyforSafeandCar-ingSchoolsandCommunitieswillusethegrantmoneytoworkwithcommunitypartnersin-cludingBigstoneCreeNationBigstoneswomensshelterandtheRCMPtodevelopandim-plementcommunitystrategiestoaddresstheissueMarniPearcethesocietysexecutivedirectorsaidinanemail.Theprojectwillentailspe-cicprogramminginitiativesoveratwo-yearperiodstrivingtobuildhealthyrelationshipsbetweencommunitypartnersandidentifypromisingstrate-giestoaddressviolenceagainstwomenandgirlsPearcesaid.Projectdetailsarestillbeingworkedoutshesaid.TheprojectwillalsobesupportedbytheareaschoolsSt.TheresaSchoolMistas-siniySchoolandOskiPa-sikoniwewKamik.Oneofthethingsthatisreallycriticaltousisensur-ingthatthereissustainability.SowewillbelookingathowweworkwiththecommunitytodevelopthecapacityoftheadultstosupporttheyoungpeopleparticularlythegirlsPearcetoldTheJournal.TheyexpecttoinvolveNewprojectghtsviolenceagainstwomeninAlbertaByRENEFRANCOEURSoftwhistlesfromhand-craftedNativeAmericanuteslledtheAthabascaDeltaCommunitySchoolADCSinFortChipewyanforthersttimeonMay14-16aspartofastu-denthealthandwellnessprogram.Self-taughtflutistJacobHandelfromCalgarygaveaworkshoptoabout20Grade4studentsonhowtoplaytheNativeAmericanfluteaspartoftheschoolsHelpingHandstoSuccessprogram.NowinitsfthyeartheprogramstrivestoimproverecreationalactivitiesinthecommunityandpromotementalhealthpreventionandearlyinterventionservicestostudentsfromkindergartenthroughGrade12.Whatweretryingtodoisintroducechildrentoalotofdifferentthings.WhenyouliveinaNorth-erncommunityyoudontalwayshavetheseopportu-nities.Sowevebroughtintheguitarddlethenativedrumandnowwehaveyetanotheropportunitywiththeute.NotmanypeopleplayitsoitsspecialsaidDonnaCyprientheHelpingHandsprojectcoordinator.Playingthefluteoranymusicalinstrumentreducesstress.Itscalm-ingandoverallitsgoodforyourmentalhealthtohavesomethinglikethistogotowhenthingsarenotsopositiveshesaid.Thestudentslovedit.Ourstafflovedit.Itsnothardtolearnitsactuallyeasiertoplaythanarecorder.HandelwhotravelstoFortChipmultipletimesayeartovisitfriendsbroughtanumberofA-minorstarterflutesfromButchHallatraditionalwoodworkerwhomakesprecisiontunedflutesoutofWeatherfordTexas.Eachstudentpurchasedauteattheendofthework-shopHandelsaidforadis-countedprice.Itriedtellingthemaboutthefluteshistorybuttheyreallyjustwantedtoplayhesaidwithalaugh.Wewentoverafewbasicsongsandaddedourownembellishmentstothemusic.Thatsthethingaboutthefluteitbringsoutstudentscre-ativityandyoudontneedawholelotofformaltrain-ingtodothat.HandellastvisitedADCSinJanuaryperformingflutesolosforstudentsandstaff.Thestudentscalmedrightdown.Theyjuststoppedandlistenedtohim.ItwasmovingCypriensaid.Theenthusiasmwassooverwhelmingthathere-turnedthismonthtohosthisrstworkshop.Hesaidhehopestodomoreinthefuture.Itsverytherapeutichesaid.Peoplehaveevenstartedusingtheminyogaclasses.HandelhasbeenplayingtheNativeAmericanuteforjustover10years.IwasonaroadtripandhadjustreachedMon-tanaorNorthDakotaandIheardsomeoneplayingtheNativeAmericanfluteforthefirsttimeanditwasjustsodifferentandbeautiful.Thatwaswhenmyflutejourneybeganhesaid.OvershadowedbythedrumthefluteisslowlygainingpopularityagainHandelsaid.Peoplehearitontelevi-sionorinthemoviesandgetitmixedupwiththepanute...Backinthedayitwasprevalentinmanyin-digenoustribes.Theyfounda5000year-oldfluteinOntario...Icanseethatin-terestgrowingagainwiththingslikeutecircles-therewasjustoneinColdLakeactually.Weknowthatviolenceisalearnedbehav-iourandthatpositivenon-violentbehavioursmustbetaughtandreinforcedconsistentlybyalloftheadultsinachildslife.MarniPearceSocietyforSafeandCaringSchoolsandCommunitiesapproximately48youngwomenaged8-14andtheirfamiliesforanestimateddi-rectimpactof240peopledur-ingthetwoyearsPearcesaid.Howeveritisexpectedthatreachwillalsoinvolvetheyoungmeninthecommunitywhoneedtobeawareofbetterrelationshipstrategiesinordertochangeattitudestowardsandpreventviolenceagainstwomensheadded.Weknowthatviolenceisalearnedbehaviourandthatpositivenon-violentbehavioursmustbetaughtandreinforcedconsistentlybyalloftheadultsinachildslife.Thefederalgovernmenthasnearlydoubleditssupportforcommunity-basedproj-ectslikethisonesince2006contributingtoover6000projectsthroughgrantsfromStatusofWomenCanada.
