27TuesdayDecember32013YellowknifespeedskaterscompeteinWesternchampionshipsEightspeedskatersfromtheYellowknifeSpeedSkat-ingClubwereinBCmid-Novemberfortheirrstcom-petitionoftheseasonintheleaduptothe2014ArcticWinterGames.TheteamwasracingintheWesternCanadaSingleDistanceChampionshipswhereveoftheathletespostedbestpersonaltimes.AustinMillerTaraStocktonLaurenEggenbergerDominiqueBen-nettAliFlemingCamilleRourkeMoniqueChapmanandKirianneAshleyallfromtheYellowknifeclubmadeupthelargestgroupfromoneclubrepresentedatthecompetition.NWTsnowboarderstartsoffseasonwithinternationalcompetitionYellowknifesAndrewMatthewsheadedoverseasre-centlytotakeonhisrstsnowboardingcompetitionoftheyearinDachsteinAustriawherehefacedstiffcom-petitionandchallengingconditionsontheslopestylejustmissingoutonthesemi-nals.MatthewsisnowheadedtoColoradoforatrainingcampbeforetakingonmorecompetitionsthisseason.SpeedskatingclubshelpbringOlympiansclosertoSochiTheInuvikandYellowknifespeedskatingclubsareleadingtheterritoryinlendingaskatetotheCana-dianSpeedSkatingteamonitsjourneytotheOlympicsbyparticipatinginSkatetoSochi.TheCanada-widemovementasksskaterstologtheirskatinglapswiththegoalofrecordingadistanceequivalenttothatbetweenOttawaandSochi.Yellowknifeheldapubliceventlastweekendtoencouragethecitysresidentstorecordtheirlapsaswell.TheNWTsownprofessionalspeedskaterMichaelGildaywillbeoneoftheTeamCanadamem-bersmakingthejourneytoSochiinFebruary.SPORTSBRIEFSSportsRecreationFitnessByMARIACHURCHStudentsinFortSmithhadaspringintheirsteplastFridayafterthetravel-ingJumpaBunchprogramintroducedthemtoKangooBootsthenewestbounc-ingtrendmakingwavesintheNWT.JumpaBunchisrunbyYellowknifesAmandaGrobeckerwhoreceivedagrantfromthedepartmentofMunicipalandCommu-nityAffairstosharetheac-tivitywithcommunitiesintheSouthSlave.GrobeckerdescribestheKangooBootsasskibootswithelasticclamshellsstrappedtothebottomtocre-ateareboundeffectgivingabouncetoeachstep.FortSmithwasthenalstopontheSouthSlavetourStudentsjumptonewheightsintheSouthSlavewhichhitupHayRiverKatlodeecheFortProvi-denceandFortResolutionlastweek.Schoolsandthepublicwerebothinvitedtotakepartinthebouncingfun.GrobeckerherselfstrappedintotheKangooBootsledtheprogrammingandsaidIndyouhavetobereallycreativewithkidsandcomeupwithnewways.Notthatyouaretrickingthemintotnessbutndingsomethingthattheyndfunandexciting.AmandaGrobeckerJumpaBunchreactionsfromyouthhavebeenencouraging.IvehadkidsaskifIcanmovetotheircommunityGrobeckersharedwithTheJournalbeforeteachingaclassofGrade8studentsfromPaulWilliamKaeserHighSchoolattherecreationcentreinFortSmith.Otherstudentshavetoldheritwasthebestdayoftheirlifeshesaid.Eventheleastactivestu-dentscanoftenbeencour-agedtotakepartmainlybe-causetheydontrealizetheyaredoingthedreadedwordexerciseGrobeckersaid.Indyouhavetobereallycreativewithkidsandcomeupwithnewways.Notthatyouaretrickingthemintot-nessbutndingsomethingthattheyndfunandexcit-ingshesaid.Thebestpartisprettymucheverykidwhentheyleaveissweatingandtheydontrealizeitwhiletheyaredoingit.TheJumpaBunchpro-gramhasbeenspreadingthroughoutYellowknifesinceGrobeckerbroughtittotheNWTjustoverayearagoandisquicklybecom-ingastapleattheschoolsandrecreationcentres.Pro-grammingiscateredtoallagegroupsrangingfrom6yearsoldandup.ForadultsregardlessofageGrobeckersaidthebootsaretheperfectwaytogetexercisewithlowstressonjointsparticularlythekneesandback.Asanaddedbonusforthetnessinclinedthebootsburnupto25percentmorecaloriessincetheyactasweightsonthefeet.Foryouththebootschal-lengetheirnemotorskillsandbalanceGrobeckeradded.YoullseeeveninKin-dergartenandGrade1theyllusethemtheyllfallafewtimesandthengetupholdyourhandandwalkalongthewallandthenwithin15minutestheyareupandrunningaroundthegymshesaid.Evenifyouareasuperuncoordinatedpersonitstillworksreallywell.Grobeckersaidsheiswork-ingonsecuringfundingtobringtheJumpaBunchpro-gramtomorecommunitiesoutsideofYellowknife.Slowlyintroducingstu-dentsandcommunitiestotheKangooBoothasbeentherststepshesaid.KangoobootsareavailableforpurchaseontheJumpaBunchwebsitefoundathttpjumpabunch.caoronFace-bookathttpswww.facebook.comJumpABunch.PhotosMariaChurchStudentstestoutrunningwithanextraspringintheirstep.HoppingismadeeasyfortheGrade8studentsinFortSmithwithelasticpoweredboots.AmandaGrobeckerrightinstructsGrade8studentsonhowtobalanceintheKangooboots.Thebootsarebuiltwithanelastic-poweredreboundingovalattachedtothebottom.
