ArtsCultureHeritageWeek20TuesdayFebruary252014ByMARIACHURCHGrade7studentsfromPaulWilliamKaeserPWKhighschoolinFortSmithweregivenarareglimpseintowhatlifecouldhavebeenlikeforthemin1998andforthemostparttheyfounditprettyfunny.HeritageWeektookonapersonalmeaningfortheFortSmithstudentslastweekwhentheyopenedtwotimecapsulesattheNorthernLifeMuseumandCulturalCen-trepackaged16yearsago.Mydadwearsoneofthoseonestudentexclaimedaboutthefadedjeanjacketspicturedonseveral1998popculturemagazinecov-ersfoundinthetimecapsule.WhatarepogsanotherstudentaskedlaughingwiththerestoftheclasswhenmuseumdirectorMathieuDoucetdescribedthecol-lectablediscgamepopular-izedinthe1990s.TheyweresuperhookedinmuseumadministratorDianeSealssharedwithTheJournalTimecapsulesgivestudentsasnapshotof1998aftertherstcapsulewasopenedonMondaylastweek.SealssaidthetimecapsuleswereactuallyaddressedtotheGrade6classof2013buttheyhadbeenburiedinthemuseumsstorageroomandforgottenaboutuntilsherecentlyunearthedthem.ShealsofoundoneaddressedtoGrade6studentsin2018.Despiteitbeingayearlateforthe2013capsulesthemuseumdecidedtoopenthecapsuleswiththeGrade7classwhowouldhavehadthehonourlastyearasapartofHeritageWeekintheNWT.EachitemwascarefullyremovedfromthecapsuleandheldupbyDoucetforthestudentstoseeanddiscuss.AmongtheitemsdiscoveredwasaNintendoPowermaga-zinehockeycardsaoppydiskwithphotosandcas-setteswithmusicplaylists.Sealssaidachallengenowisndingtheoldertechnologytobeabletoaccessthedataontheoppydiskandcassettesaproblemthatlikelydidntcrossthemindsofstudentsin1998.Within15yearswearealreadystrugglingtogureoutoldtechnologywhichiscrazyshesaid.Wetalkedaboutthat.Thestudentswanttomakeatimecapsulenowsowhatkindsofthingswouldyouputingiventhefactthatwithin15yearstechnologyisalreadyoutdatedWouldyouputinaUSBclipofdigitalstufforwouldyoujustputphotosinItsinteresting.Eachstudentwasalsoabletoopenaletterwrittentothembyoneofthe1998Grade6students.Itsreallyinterestingespe-ciallytheletterssaidKriz-ziaConcepcion.GoingoffthereactionsshesawSealssaidGrade6isanidealagetoappreciatethevalueofatimecapsuleandwhatitmeanstoculturalheritage.Theyrestillkidenoughtoknowwhatthegamesareyettheyreoldenoughtounder-standwhatsgoingonintheworldandthecurrentevents.Itsanicebalanceshesaid.TheactivityhopefullywillsparkstudentsinterestinthevalueoflearningabouttheirpastDoucetsaid.Youcangolookatthehis-torybooksandseewhatwashappeningherein1998-weallknowthebenetofknow-inghistory-buthavingthatexchangefromastudentyouragethatmighthavethesameperspectiveasyouisaconnec-tionthatreallymakesitenjoy-ableandpersonalhesaid.ThemuseumhostedtheGrade7classtwiceduringHeritageWeekopeningonecapsuleeachdayandtakingthetimetodiscusswhatwashappeningin1998andhowitrelatestoourpresent.Doingatimecapsuleisntgoingtosolvehistoryoritsnotgoingtomakepivotalchangebutitssmallandfunactivitiesthatcreateaposi-tivereinforcementtowardstheimportanceofhistoryandheritageandbringsthemintothemuseumDoucetsaid.PhotoMariaChurchMuseumdirectorMathieuDoucetrevealsmagazinesfoundinthetimecapsule.ArtsCultureFurByMEAGANWOHLBERGStandingonthesuccessesofitsboomingtrappingin-dustryNWTsfurprogramisexpandingtoincludemus-koxpeltsasanewpilotproj-ectofthedepartmentofIn-dustryTourismandInvest-mentITI.ITIMinisterDavidRam-sayannouncedlastWednes-daythatthedepartmentwillbepurchasingmuskoxhidesfromhunterstoselltoleatherandqiviutproducersinsouth-ernCanadaandabroad.ThemuskoxpilotaddstotheexistingHideandFurProcurementProgramwhichgivesmooseandcaribouhidetannersamarkettoselltheirnishedhides.ThosehidesarethensoldbacktoNWTcraftspeopleatthesameprice.Thesameisdoneforsealskinandbeaverpelts.Thedepartmentisnowplanningtofurtherexpandtheprogramtoincludemorespeciesoffurtobeusedbytheterritorystraditionalartsandcraftssectorandintendstoincreasethepriceofsealupfromitscurrentvalueof55perpelt.HereintheNWTwecan-notkeepupwiththedemandfromourartsandcraftssec-torRamsaysaid.Itises-timatedthatfurboughtandsoldthroughthisprogramlastyeargeneratedalmost350000forcraftproducersMuskoxhidestobemarketedthroughpilotprogramintheNWT.Theirbeautifulcreationspromoteourcul-turaldiversityandarepartofoursociallyresponsibleandenvironmentallysustain-ableeconomicdevelopmentstrategy.RamsaydeliveredthenewsaspartofhisupdateontheGenuineMackenzieValleyFurProgramwhichhecalledtheenvyoftheCanadiantrappingindus-trydespiteitssmall-scaleapproach.TheprogramprovidesNWTtrapperswithaccesstoaninternationalauctionmarketwhileallowingtrapperstomaximizetheirearningswithtrainingonbesttrappingpracticesandpeltpreparation.Lastyearstrappingsea-sonyieldedthehighestreturnstheterritoryhadseeninover30yearswithsalesexceeding2.7mil-lion.About80percentofthatwenttoChinawhichcurrentlyleadstheworldinfurgarmentmanufacturing.Ramsaysaiddemandisex-pectedtostaystrongthisyearduetothegrowingbaseofhardworkingtrappers.LastyearasmallamountofmartenbrandedwiththeGenuineMackenzieValleyFurlabelfetchedanastronomical1300perpelt.Butthistypeofsuccesswouldnotbeattainableiftrappersdidnotrstlearnandinvestthetimeinproperlyhandlingandpreparingtheirfurhesaid.Ourtrappersaretheverybestintheirtradeandasaresultsoisth
