21TuesdayFebruary252014ByMEAGANWOHLBERGThebravenewworldimaginedbylegendarysci-encectionauthorAldousHuxleymayhavebeenlessthanutopianinitsvisionofthefuturebutwritersintheNorthwestTerritoriesareembracingthetitlefortheirupcomingcelebrationoflit-eraryrisk-takers.TheninthannualNorth-wordsfestivalscheduledforJune5-8ismakingsci-encectionafocusthisyearunderthethemeofBraveNewNorthwhichwasalsoadoptedtoconveythecour-ageespousedbytheNorthsexperimentalandemergingwritersresponsibleforlaunch-ingtheregionoutoftheclichandintothemodern.Peoplearetakingrealriskstotellthedeepersto-riesoftheNorthsaidNorth-wordsexecutivedirectorAn-neliesPool.ForalongtimealotofthewritingwehadcomingfromherewaswhatIwouldcalltheclichNorthNorthwords2014acelebrationofrisk-takingBraveNewNorthfestivalfocusesonsciencefictionArtsCultureLiteratureByMARIACHURCHTheTownofInuvikwillbeplayinghosttotheNWTsrstArcticImageFestivalcelebratingphotographyandvideographyshotaroundtheArcticCircle.TheinauguralfestivalwillfeaturetherstuseofPechaKucha20x20aworld-widetrendingartpresentationstylewhere20imagesarese-lectedwith20secondsofex-planationforeach.Itisanartstyleandthereissomethinginterestingaboutitbecausewithonly20sec-ondstotalkabouteachphotoitforcesyoutothinkaboutwhatyouweretryingtosaywhenyoutookthatimagesaidLynnFeaseycuratorofthefestival.Morethan500citiesintheworldhaveheldPechaKuchaeventssinceitsinceptionin2004.InuvikwillbetherstinNorthernCanada.ItsabitofhistoryinthemakingFeaseysaid.ItstherstfestivalintheNWTandwearetherstinthethreeter-ritoriesusingPechaKucha.ThefestivalrunsFridayFeb.28toSundayMar.2.andwillfeatureexhibitsfromsomeofCanadasprestigiousartphotographersincludingDaveBroshaMichelleVal-bergandDonaldWeber.ParticipantswillalsohaveachancetotakeworkshopstoimprovetheirphotographyInuviktohostNWTsrstArcticImageFestivalArtsCulturePhotographyskillsinthechallengingArc-ticlandscapefromBroshaValbergandkeynotespeakerThaddeusHolowniaavisit-ingartprofessorandvisualartistfromtheEastCoastofCanada.Hesanincrediblephotog-rapherandhellbebringingyetanotherleveltothefesti-valaspartofthejuryFeaseysaid.Theworkshopsareagreatopportunityforevery-bodyattendingtogetsomevaluableknowledge.Submissionsfortheinau-guralArcticimagecontestaredividedintothreecate-goriesprofessionalamateurandyouth.Eachcategoryallowsforvesubmissionsfromphotographersacrosstheworldaslongasthesub-jectoftheartistheArctic.TheideabehindholdinganArcticImageFestivalintheNWTcamefromagroupoflocalphotographyenthusiastsinInuvikwhosawaneedtosharetheincrediblelocalartandtooffertrainingtobuddingphotographersFeaseysaid.Therearealotofphotogra-phersthatliveintheBeaufortDeltaareathataretakingsomeamazingpicturesoftheareaandofthepeopleshesaid.PhotographyfromtheArc-ticCircleisauniquesubjectmatterunderexploredinpopu-larculturebutlocalartistsarenoticingmoreandmoreartistsemergingfromtheareaalongwithsouthernartistsseekingouttheNorthforthevastnessofthelandscapeandqualityofthelightFeaseysaid.Iwouldntevencallmy-selfanamateurphotographerbutIlovephotographyasamediumandasanartandformeitsthelight.Thereisnothinglikeitshesaid.Thefestivalhasmorethan20peoplesubmittingimages.Tolearnmoreaboutthefes-tivalandtosubmitimagesgoonlinetohttpwww.arc-ticimagefestival.com-theNorthofwinterandtheexplorersandtheminers.Poolsaidwritinghasbe-comemorepersonalfocus-ingonboththetriumphsandstrugglesfacedbyNorth-ernerssuchasresidentialschoolexperiences.Theyneedtobetoldandtheyneedtobecelebratedaspartofwhoweareshesaid.Theliteraryculturehastoreectwhatsreallygoingonhereandnotallofitisabsolutelywonderful.Theresalotoftoughstuffgoingonhereandweneedtoacknowledgethat...Thetoughexperiencesarewhatmakeuswhoweare.Onthesci-frontCana-daspremierwriterRobertJ.Sawyerwillleadthechargeatthisyearsfestival.TheauthoristheonlyCanadiantojoinsevenotherwritersinwin-ningallthreeoftheworldstopawardsforasciencec-tionnovelinasingleyear.Sawyerwillbejoinedbysci-fiauthorandpub-lisherHaydenTrenholmwinnerofthe2008Cana-dianScienceFictionAu-roraAwardandauthorLizWestbrook-Trenholm.Wedneverhadanysci-encectionelementinthefestivalbeforeandweknowthattheresawholecommu-nityofsciencectionreadersandsomeaspiringwritersoutthereaswellsowethoughtitwasagoodtimetoreachouttothemPoolsaid.Wethoughtitwouldbefun.Poolsaidsheisstillwork-ingoncompilingtheslateofNorthernauthorsforthefes-tivalandisonceagainen-couragingtheterritorysclosetpoetsstorytellersandnoveliststoemergeforoneofthefesti-valsnotableopenmicevents.Inmyviewtheyreoneofthehighlightsthemostim-portantpartsofourfestivalandwhatIparticularlylikeaboutouropenmicnightsiswescheduleourguestauthorsandwealsoopenitforany-onewhowantstosignupPoolsaid.Wedontgiveanyonespecialtreatment...AllauthorsnomatteratwhatpointyoureatinyourcareerwhetheryourehighlyacclaimedorpublishedoranemergingNorthernwritergettingupforthersttimewetreateverybodywithre-spectasauthors.Thefestivalsmostpopu-lareventtheBlusheroticaopenmicnightwilltakeitsnowpermanentplaceonthescheduleaswell.ItsbecomeaNortherntraditionPoolsaid.Itsal-mostoursignatureeventitsbecomesopopular.Lastyearitwasamazinglyfunnypeo-plewerelaughing.Itsalmo
