22TuesdayMarch25201414034DA114032DA1CallforExpressionofInteresttobeaCandidateforParticipationinRegionalPlanReviewPanelsTheGovernmentofAlbertaiscontinuingitsworkondevelopingsevenregionalplansunderthedirectionoftheLand-useFrameworkforAlberta.EachplanprovidesthecontextandguidanceforlandandnaturalresourceuseineachregiontohelpachieveAlbertaslong-termsocialandeconomicgoalsbasedonafoundationofgoodenvironmentalmanagement.RegionalplansaredevelopedinconsultationwithAlbertansandbecomelegalinstrumentsonceapprovedbyCabinet.AssuchtheAlbertaLandStewardshipActALSAincludesprovisionsforrequestingareviewofaregionalplanorregionalplanamendment.TosupportthisreviewprocesstheGovernmentofAlbertaiscreatingastandingrosterofcandidatesfromwhichitwillselectmemberstoparticipateinreviewpanelsforregionalplansoncetheplanshavebeenimplemented.TheroleofthepanelwillbetoconsiderreviewrequestsandproviderecommendationstotheGovernmentofAlberta.Candidatesfromtherosterwillbeinvitedtoparticipateinpanelsbasedonthesubjectmatterofthereviewandthecandidatesareaofexpertise.Oncetherosterisestablishedcandidatenameswillsitontherosterforbetweentwotothreeyears.TherosterwillconsistofabroadrangeofstakeholdersandassuchindividualswithabackgroundorinterestinpropertyrightsFirstNationsbusinessenvironmentandruralorurbaninterestsareencouragedtoapply.ForfurtherinformationoncandidaterequirementsandtosubmityourinterestforparticipationinRegionalPlanReviewPanelspleasevisittheLand-useFrameworkwebsiteathttpwww.landuse.alberta.ca.SportsRecreationCurlingBRIEFSSPORTSFortChipewyanhostssixmushersatannualdogracesHoveringbetween-12and-10theweatherwasper-fectlastweekendforsixdogmusherstocompeteinFortChipewyansannualdograceshostedbytheFortChipewyanMushers.Theracetrailtookmushersontothefrozenlakefrontwherethehighertemperaturesandwidetrailsmadetheperfectcombinationforafastrace.Inthe10-dograceRolandCampbellcameinrstplacewithatimeof3340followedbyDavidCampbellCam-eronMcDonaldandDannySavic.Inthesix-dograceMatthewPoitrasbroughthomethewinwithatimeof1653DavidCampbelltooksecondfollowedbyRolandCampbellArchieCardinalandCameronMacdonald.YouthinYellowknifeforTraditionalGamesChampionshipsHundredsofAboriginalyouthgatheredinYellowknifeonMar.6to9toparticipateintheannualTraditionalGamesChampionships.ThegamesrunbytheAboriginalSportsCircleoftheNWTandthisyearhostedbyWilliamMac-donaldSchoolaimtoincreaseparticipationandaware-nessofInuitandDenegamesintheterritory.Eventspit-tedcommunitiesintheNWTagainsteachotherandin-cludedtheone-foothighkicktwo-foothighkickwristhangandlegwrestlingaswellasDenegamesincludingthestickraisesnowsnakepolepushandhandgames.PhotosBillBradenByMARIACHURCHHotelsinYellowknifearepushingtheirbookinglimitsthisweekwiththeCanadianSeniorCurlingChampion-shipssweepingthetown.MaureenMillerchairoftheeventandpresidentoftheNWTCurlingAssocia-tionsaidsheknewhostingthe10-daynationalchampi-onshipswouldbringalargecrowdbutwasntexpect-ingthemorethan60curl-ingfanswhowerescram-blingtondlodginglastweekwithmanyhotelsinthecityatcapacity.WeexpecteditwouldbebusybecauseweknewtheLongJohnJamboreeisgoingtogoonatthesametimebutIdontknowthatweexpectedthatitwouldbeascrazyasitisMillersaid.Some112athletesfromeveryprovinceandterritoryareinYellowknifeforthechampionshipstakingplaceuntilMar.29andmanyofthemarebringingfriendsandfamilyalongfortheirrstad-ventureNorthof60.TwoYellowknifeteamsTeamGlenHudyandTeamAnnMcKellar-Gilisareintherunningforthechampion-shipsafterbothteamswontheterritorialchampionshipsheldinYellowknifeinFebruary.YellowknifesweepsopendoorstoCanadasseniorcurlersThepre-qualiersfortheCanadianchampionshipsstartedThursdaymorn-ingwhichsawtwoteamsaddedtotheoriginal10-teamplayingeldtomakeita12-teamroundrobintournament.DefendingwomenschampionsoftheCana-dianseniorsteamColleenPinkneyopenedthegamesSaturdaywithamatchagainstOntariosMarilynBodoghalsoaformerCa-nadiancurlingchampion.Thematchwaswon8-6forBodogh.AftertwodaysofplayMondaymorningBodoghalongwithManitobasLoisFowlerandPEIsJenniferScottremainedundefeatedintheirdraws.TwoformercurlingOlym-piansGlenysBakkerandPennyShantzareinthemixofthisyearschampionshipsaswellasanumberofformerCanadiancurlingchampionsincludingCathyGauthierandKateHorne.Themensreturningchampionsdidnotwinbacktheirspotatthena-tionalchampionshipssothetitleisopentoallmaleteamsthisyear.Thetournamentswin-ningteamswillgoontorepresentCanadaatthe2015worldseniorchampionships.TheresgoingtobesomereallygreatcurlingMillersaidoftheteams.WhenYellowknifewonthebidfortheCanadianSeniorChampionshipstwoyearsagoitspitchincludedtoutingculturalhighlightsoftheNWTlikethenorth-ernlightsandtheannualdogderbyMillersaid.Wealsohaveagreatfa-cilityinYellowknifeinthatithaseightsheetsoficeandthecommunityarenaisrightnextdoorandwearegoingtobeutilizingbothvenuesshesaid.Millersaidabigincentiveforthecityisrevenuefromthegames.Arecentstudydoneonthe2011CanadianSeniorshostedinDigbyNovaScotiafoundthatthechampionshipsinfusedthelocaleconomywithmorethan500000.ThechampionshipsinYellowknifewrapupthisSaturdaywiththefinalmatches.Tokeepuptodatewiththescoresandfrontrunne
