SportsRecreationFunding15TuesdayApril222014Pleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.MissStacheisasophisticatedandcutelittlelady.IsntshejustpreciousIfyoubroughtherhomeshedbesohappyandgiveyoucuddles.LTD.ByMARIACHURCHOttawahastakenaneagerinterestintheactivitylevelsofNWTresidentswithanannouncementbythefederalgovernmentlastweekpledg-ingalmost1millioninfund-ingforsportsintheterritory.Thefederalandterritorialgovernmentssignedathree-yearbilateralagreementinYel-lowknifeMondaythatmatchedfundingforsportdevelopmentandparticipationintheNWTmakingofcialthemoneythathasbeenowingintoterrito-rialsportorganizationsoverthelastthreeyears.BalGosalministerofstateforSportwasinYellowknifefortheannouncementandtosignthebilateralagreementwithRobertMcLeodGNWTsministerofMunicipalandCommunityAffairs.WorkingwithprovincialandterritorialgovernmentstoadvanceimportantprioritiesforsportandphysicalactivityinCanadaissomethingourgovernmentisproudtodoGosalsaidinapressreleasefollowingtheannouncementMonday.WewanttomakesportparticipationandathletedevelopmentapartofCana-dianseverydaylives.NWTsportsreceivemajorfederalfundingboostFundingdirectlysupportsAboriginalgamescompetitionAlltoldtheterritorywillreceive1869014tocoverthethree-yearperiodthatbeganin2012andwillendin2015.Thefundsaredi-rectedatintroduction-to-sportprogrammingsportdevelopmentinAboriginalcommunitiesandtheCana-dianSportforLifemovement.AccordingtoMcLeodthefundingismainlytargetedatyouthintheterritory.Oneofthethingswedis-cusswhentheministersofsportfromacrossthecountrygettogetheristheinactivityofallouryoungpeoplebecauseofalltheelectronicgamesvideogamesandthat.WearetryingtogetthemtobeabitmoreactivehetoldTheJournal.McLeodsaidthereisalreadyevidencetosupportthesuc-cessoffundingyouthsportsprogrammingintheterritoryssmallercommunities.Ithinkitsworkingbecausewearedeliveringalotoftheseprogramsatthegrassrootslevelandifyoulookatourpartici-pationintheArcticWinterGamesnotthispastgamesinFairbanksbutthegamesbe-fore27ofthe33communitieswererepresentedbyathleteswhichIthinkishuge.Thatsagoodindicationthatthepro-gramsareworkingatthelocallevelandkidsaregettingabitmoreactiveandabletoqualifyforTeamNWT.FundingforAboriginalgamesAccordingtoGregHopfexecutivedirectoroftheAb-originalSportsCircleoftheNWTthefundingdirectlypromotesAboriginalgamesforNWTyouthbycoveringthecostoftransportationtotheterritoryslargesttraditionalgamescompetition.HeldinYellowknifeeveryMarchsince2013theTradi-tionalGamesChampionshipshostsaround150to200stu-dentscompetingintraditionalInuitandDenegames.Muchoftheexpensesas-sociatedwithputtingonthechampionshipsareconsumedbytravelcostsforyouthinre-motecommunitiesHopfsaid.Overthelasttwoyearsthefederalandterritorialgov-ernmentshavecontributed100000tocovercom-mutecoststotheannualchampionships.WereuniquetotherestofCanada.ThewaywedothingsisdifferentupintheNorththanwhatwedointheprovinces.Evenourgamesareunique.OurjobistoprotectthemandourjobistopromotethemandthatswhatthissupportallowsustodoHopfsaid.Thefundingisnotlong-termandwilllikelybeex-haustedinthenextveyears.WhenthathappensHopfsaidtheywillneedtolookatotherfundingoptionsorapplyformorefederalfunding.WereuniquetotherestofCanada.ThewaywedothingsisdifferentupintheNorththanwhatwedointheprovinces.Evenourgamesareunique.Ourjobistoprotectthemandourjobistopromotethemandthatswhatthissupportallowsustodo.GregHopfAboriginalSportsCircleoftheNWTPhotoDaveBroshadepartmentofCanadianHeritageFromleftfederalSportMinisterBalGosalandGNWTministerofMunicipalandCommunityAffairsRobertMcLeodsignabilateralsportfundingagreementinYellowknifelastweek.ByMARIACHURCHStufngyourfacejustbe-cameanofcialtrainingex-erciseforfoodiesinYellow-knifeafteralocalrestaurantannounceditslaunchingtheterritorysrst-evercompeti-tiveeatingleague.CoyotesSteakhouseandLoungehasdecidedtohostaleagueforgutsygourmetswithatalentforconsumingcopiousamountsofburgersandfriesasfastashumanlypossible.EdButownerofCoy-otessaidhisrestauranthasheldone-offeatingcompe-titioneventsbeforethelastofwhichwasin2012whenlocalJamiePyewastheonlycompetitortonisha2-lbBeastBurger.AtCoyoteswereknownforportionssowedecidedtoexpandontheportionsizesButsaid.Wehavealotofbigconstructionwork-ersuphere.Alotofpeoplewhoworkintheminecomeinheretooandtheyreallyenjoypackingitin.Espe-ciallyifitsgoodfood.Withthesuccessfuleat-ingcompetitionundertheirbeltandpastcompetitorsCompetitiveeatingleagueonthemenuinYKSportsRecreationEatingLeagueraringforanothergocreat-ingafull-blownleaguewasthenextlogicalstepfortherestaurantowner.Fora20entryfeecom-petitorswillgetanofcialleaguet-shirtandaccesstoallveeat-offstobeheldattherestauranteverytwomonths.Eachcompetitiondaythefast-esteaterwillreceiveacashprizeof100andayear-longcouponforaburgeraweekfromCoyotes.Usingapointsystemcom-petitorseatingtimeswillberecordedsothatbytheleaguesendonestuffedwin-nerwillcollectthegrandprizethatincludestworound-tripticketstoEdmontondonatedbyCanadianNorthandof-cialbraggingrightsasleaguechampion.ButsaidhehasalreadyhadinterestfromYellowkniferslookingtogetinontheter-ritorysrstofcialcompeti-tiv
