16TuesdayApril292014TheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilwouldliketocongratulatealltheAuroraCollegegraduatesontheirachievementandwishthemthebestastheypursuetheircareers.TheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilwouldliketocongratulatealltheAuroraCollegegraduatesontheirachievementandwishthemthebestastheypursuetheircareers.CongratulationsAuroraGradsCongratulationsAuroraGradsSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilLiketheSSDEConFacebookwww.facebook.comSouthSlaveDECLiketheSSDEConFacebookwww.facebook.comSouthSlaveDECCreatingFuturesGOODWORKAURORAGRADUATESTheFortSmithMtisCouncilwishesyoumanymoresuccessesinthefuture.ContacttheFortSmithMtisCouncilat25CamsellSt.P.O.Box1107FortSmithNTX0E0P0Ph867872-2643Fax867872-5225Emailfortsmithmetiscouncilnorthwestel.netHealthWellnessCancerByMARIACHURCHThe10thannualSouthSlaveRelayforLifeinsup-portofcancerresearchisonthecuspofcancellationthisyearduetoalackofvolun-teerssteppinguptoruntheannualfundraisingevent.Therelaywhichalternateseachyearbetweenthecom-munitiesofHayRiverandFortSmithwasscheduledforJuneinHayRiverbutdespiterepeatedattemptsbyformerorganizerstomusteravolun-teerbasetheeventdoesnothaveenoughpeopleonboard.LornaDeveaurevenuedevelopmentcoordinatorfortheCanadianCancerSocietyintheNWTsaidthenewsisablowtothesocietyandtheeventsformerorganizers.Wevedoneeverysinglethingandmorethatwecanthinkofandtheresnothingmorethatwecandoshesaid.Idontknowwhereelsetogo.PastrelaysinHayRiverhavebeenputonbytheLionsClubbutDeveausaidtheveformerorganizersaregettingoninageandndingitdif-culttotakeonthevolunteerworkload.Whentheysentacallouttothecommunityforhelpnobodycame.HayRiverRelayforLifeonbrinkofcancellationSouthSlavecancerfundraisershortonmanpowerTheyreachedouttothecommunityinNovemberpublicizeditandsaidLookwearegoingtostartRelayforLifeandweneedsomehelpthisyear...butnotonepersonshoweduptothatmeetingshesaid.NotyetdiscouragedDe-veauandtheLionsClubor-ganizersagainreachedouttothecommunitythroughsocialmediaandyersdis-tributedforfreeintheSuperAFoodsnewsletter.Onlyonepersonresponded.Theresdoorsjustslam-minginourfaceunfortu-natelyDeveausaid.ThiswouldhavebeenthetenthyeartheSouthSlavehasheldarelaythateachyearbringsinasignicantchunkofchangeforthesociety.TwoyearsagotheHayRiverrelayfundraised90000fortheCanadianCan-cerSocietywhilelastyearsFortSmitheventbroughtinawhopping112000.TheNorthwestTerrito-ries-Yellowknifeeventsin-cludedaswellasFortSmithandHayRiver-bringinthehighestper-capitarevenueinthecountryDeveausaid.Theseareverysmallcom-munitiesverytight-knitcommunitiesthatdothem-selvesproud.Thatswhyitjustbreaksourheartsthatwecantgetthisgoingthisyear.Idontknowwhereelsetogo.Everybodythathasbeeninvolvedhasbeenphenomenal.Icannotsayenoughabouttheseindivid-ualsbutwearenowbatting1000here.ItstoolateforJuneshesaid.TheHayRiverrelaycouldtechnicallystillhappeninSeptemberbutitwouldasmallmiracleatthispointDeveausaid.Allthemate-rialfortherelayisavailablethroughtheCanadianCancerSocietybutittakesaround10or11dedicatedindividu-alstomakeithappen.WhiletwoyearsagotherewerethreeJuneRelayforLifeeventsintheNWTheldinHayRiverInuvikandYel-lowknifethisyeartheyaredowntojusttheoneinYel-lowknifewithbothHayRiverandInuvikbackingout.ForthedevastatedformerorganizersinHayRiverDe-veausaidtheyhavealreadycommittedtodrivingtotheYellowknifeRelayforLifescheduledforFridayJune13attheYellowknifeFieldhouse.OnamorepositivenotefortheCanadianCancerSocietyintheNWTDeveausaidFortMcPhersonrecentlycontactedherwith11committeemem-bersonboardtorunaRelayforLifeinSeptember.PhotoShariOlsenTeamsmarchtofundraiseforcancerresearchduringHayRiversbiennialRelayforLifeinJuneof2012.ThisyearsJuneeventhasbeencanceledduetoalackofvolunteersbutcouldstillhappeninSeptember.
