18TuesdayAugust262014ByDALICARMICHAELKidsfromaroundtheterri-toryockedtotherubberizedtrackinFortSmithlastweekfortheopportunitytopartici-pateinaRunJumpandThrowRJTcampwheretheyde-velopedtheirathleticprowesswiththehelpofsomeofthetoptrackandeldcoachesintheNorth.Almost50youthagedeightto16participatedinthesportscampwhichwasheldAug.19to22organizedbytheFortSmithTrackandFieldSocietyFSTFSwithsupportfromtheMackenzieRecreationAsso-ciation.AttendeeshailedfromWhatiBehchokoKakisaFortResolutionandofcoursethelocalcommunity.WehopedtobuilduptheirtnesslevelnomatterwhatsporttheyredoingsaidJanieHobartoneofthecampsorganizers.ItsaRunJumpThrowprogramitstheideaofteachingfundamentalmovementskillsandrunningjumpingandthrowingaresokeytoeverysport.Everymorningthekidsweregivenanhoureachtoworkonspecificrunningjumpingandthrowingskillswiththeircoaches.Theseactiv-itiestransitionedintoafternoonminitrackmeetswheretheypracticedtheirnewlyacquiredskillsthroughtraditionaltrackandeldsports.Theythrewjavelinsandshotputracedaroundthetrackduringrelaysandsprintsandjumpedlongandhightoclaimbraggingrightsfortherestoftheday.Hobartsaidsheoriginallyhopedtorunthecampforabout30kidsbutasthewordspreadthenumbersincreased.Toac-commodatetheextrabodiesadditionaltness-buildingac-tivitieswereadded.Self-improvementinmindandbodyAsidefromlearningaboutbasickinesiologyconceptsduringthecampthekidsex-ercisedtheirmentalaptitudeaswell.Therescertainthingsforthekidstodotobemoreef-cientrunnersandstufflikethattheyshouldbeworkingoncombinedwithbiomechanicsandbodyposturesaidDonWhiteanexpertflowninfromtheYukontohelpwiththetraining.WhiteacompetitioncoachaccreditedthroughtheNa-tionalTrainersCerticationProgramhaslednumerousteamstotheCanadaWin-terGamesCanadaSummerGamesandtheWesternCan-adaGames.Alotofthekids-espe-ciallytheonesfromthecom-munities-haventhadalotofexperiencedoingthiskindofthingandtheyhaveinterestingquestionsquestionsthatcomefromalackofunder-standingWhitesaid.WeveneverdoneanythinglikethisintheYukon.Thoseinquisitivetenden-ciescancomefromhavingalackofsupportandresourcesneededforyouthtodevelophealthyactivehabitsaccord-ingtosomeofthecampsolderattendees.Theyhavenodevelop-mentwhentheyreplayinggamesandwatchingTVitdoesntdoanythingfortheirmindsandtheyshouldbeoutsidesaidRubyLandryachaperonewhotraveledtothecampwithagroupofsixyouthfromKakisa.Shesaidthesportingresourcesinhercommunityarelackingcom-paredtoFortSmithafaultshehopestoamendwithsomeproposedafter-schoolactivitiesinthefall.Whateverwelearnhereaschaperones...wecangohomeanddothatkindofstuffwiththemLandrysaid.Thecampofferedachanceforyouthtopracticetheirsocialskillswhileexplor-ingopportunitiesoutsideoftheircommunities.TheyneedtogetoutespeciallyattheagetheytheyreatsaidAnitaChi-cotanotherchaperonefromKakisa.TheycanknowthattheresotherplacesouttherenotjustKakisaisavailabletothemnotjustwheretheycomefrom.Theyneedtobeopentoeverythingthatsoutthereandthatcanhaveagoodinfluenceonthemastheyregrowingupsotheycanleadhealthyac-tivelifestylesshesaid.YouthwarmupforschoolsportswithathleticcampSportsRecreationTrackFieldPhotoDaliCarmichaelYouthfromacrosstheterritorygatherfortherstRunJumpThrowcamporganizedbytheFortSmithTrackandFieldSociety.SouthSlaveeducatorhandednationalawardsBrentKaulbackrstassistantsuperintendenttowinprestigioustitleByDALICARMICHAELTimeandtimeagaintheSouthSlaveDivisionalEdu-cationCouncilSSDEChascapturedawardsfortheirex-cellentlearninginitiativesandthisyeartheycanaddyetanothertrophytotheircrowdedshelf.SSDECassistantsuperin-tendentBrentKaulbackwasnamednotonlytheNWTsuperintendentoftheyearbutwasalsogiventheEXLNationalAwardapresti-gioushonourhandedoutbytheCanadianAssociationofSchoolSystemAdministra-torsCASSAattheirannualconferenceheldonJuly3inCalgaryAlta.thisyear.Kaulbackistherstpersoninhispositiontobenomi-natedwithintheterritoryandistherstassistantsu-perintendenttowinthena-tionalaward.ImjustonepartoftheteamthatsworkingonhelpingtoimprovestudentachievementacrosstheboardfromourstudentsAborigi-nalandnon-AboriginalandIthinkthatspartofwhatthisrecognitionisofKaul-backsaid.AccordingtoSSDECsuperintendentCurtisBrowntheCASSAboardsaiditwasoneofthestrongestapplica-tionstheydseen.Hewouldknow-Brownwonthesameawardin2011.Kaulbackhasastrongre-cordofrunningsuccessfulprogramsthathavemadehimarecognizededucationalleader.Hisstrongestinitiativehasbeentodevelopandpro-moteresourcesforAboriginalstudentstolearnintheirownlanguages.OverthecourseofaboutsevenyearsKaulbackhashelpedorganizedthepub-licationofover250Aborigi-nallanguagebooksincludingdictionarieschildrensbooksgraphicnovelsandstoriesoflegendsaspasseddownbycommunityelders.ItsapassionofmineKaulbacksaid.Thisismy40thyearnowineducationandmanyofthoseyearshavebeeninAboriginalschoolsorworkinginAboriginaleduca-tioninsomewayoranotherandIvebeeninmanydif-ferentcommunitiesinmanydifferentprovincesintheterritories.Iveseensomeofthedamagingeffectsthatlan-guagelosshashadoncultureandpeoplessenseofwell-be-ingandsenseofselfandthat.Ivealsoseenontheipsidethepridethatcomeswhenonestartstolearntheirlanguageorisspeakingtheirlanguagehecontinued.IpersonallythinkthatitreallyisvitallyimportantforanAb-originalpersontolearntheirmothertongueandlearntheirancestrallanguageandhavethatbepartofthem.LastOctoberKaulbackwasinvitedtoaneducationalcon-ferenceinSouthAfricaasakeynotespeakertosharehisexperiencewithorganizationsintheprocessofcreatinglearn-ingresourcessimilartohisown.CurrentlyKaulbackandhisteamareworkingonaniPadappcalledBushCreethatactsasaFirstNationsstory-book.ThestoriesarewritteninAboriginallanguageswithcaptionsandaudionarrationsavailabletoassiststudentsinlearningtheirlanguages.RecognizingexcellenceatInserviceThisweekmarksthe2014in-servicemeetingforallteachersandeducationassis-tantsintheSouthSlaveregion.FromAug.27to28theywillconveneatthePrincessAlexandraSchoolinHayRiverwheretheboardwillrecognizeexcellencewithintheorganizationincludingKaulbacksawards.Theeducationalexpertswillalsopartakeinprofes-sionaldevelopmentwork-shopswithastrongfocusoninquiry-basedlearningwhichchallengesstudentstoaskquestionsdiscoverthean-swersthroughtheirownworkandthencommunicatetheirlearningtoothers.BrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendantfortheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilwasnamedboththeNWTandCanadiansuperintendantoftheyear.PhotoDaliCarmichaelEducationAwards
