TuesdaySeptember2320149POLITICSDOMESTICVIOLENCEFortSmithdenouncesviolencebytakingbackthenightByDALICARMICHAELWehavethepowerwehavetherightThestreetsareourstakebackthenightRallyingcriesrangthroughFortSmithsdowntownasagroupofpeacefulprotestorsmarchedwithsignsinhandwiththeintentofbringingattentiontoendingdomesticvi-olenceinthecommunity.ThemarchwaspartofanannualeventheldbySutherlandHousethetownswomenandchildrensshelter.WeareheretoassistandhelppeoplewhoaregoingthroughsomesortofabusesaidLouiseBeaulieuoneoftheeventsorganiz-ersandmemberoftheNWTElderAbuseSociety.ThereasonwedohaveTakeBacktheNightistoputitouttheretoletpeopleknowthatthereareorganizationsandplacesthattheycangoforhelpwhentheyreeeingviolenceandabuse.Thegroupofabout30peoplegatheredattherecreationcentrebeforemakingtheirwayoutontothestreetswherepassersbyjoinedtheeffortlingintothecrowd.IjustwantedtobesupportivesaidmarcherDelphinePaulette.GrowingcallsforaninquiryintomissingandmurderedAboriginalwomenandthefatalbeatingofawomaninFortGoodHopeinMarchspurredherparticipation.HopefullybyseeingwomenandevenmaleswalkingtheywontbeafraidtospeakupPaulettesaid.ThatswhyImheretonight.TowncouncillorandVictimServicesco-ordinatorLynnNapier-Buckleyalsoshowedhersupportatthemarch.Ithinkitsimportanttoraiseawarenesswithinthecommunitytoshowpeoplethatasacommunitydomesticviolenceisnotsome-thingthatwewanttostandforshesaid.ShealsosharedinformationwiththegroupaboutnewfundinginitiativesfromVictimServicesincludingaprogramtohelppayfortransportationforvictimsofcrimewhoneedridestoandfromthehospitalorcourtroomfollowinganincident.Womenmenchildrenandeldersallwalkedinsolidarityforthemovement.FamilyviolenceisarealityforlotsofthekidsweservesoIthoughtmaybeitwouldbeagoodideaforthekidstocomeoutsaidElyseVanderpostayouthandfamilycoun-sellorwiththelocalTrailcrossTreatmentCentreforyouth.Itsimportantforthegirlsspecicallytotakeastandandknowthattheydohaveavoiceandfortheboystoknowthatitsnotrightandthattheycanmakeadiffer-entchoicethanmaybesomepeopleintheirfamilyhavemade.Afterthemarchattendeeswereinvitedtoahotmealanddebriengatthecommu-nityreccentre.Themomentwascatharticforsomewithtearsshedaswomensharedtheirownexperienceswitnessingorbeinginvolvedindomesticabuse.RCMPOfcerCherylRaymondtheThe-bachacommunityviolencecoordinatorgaveabriefspeechtothegrouphighlightingsomedomesticviolencestatisticsinCanada.AllviolenceremainsasignicantproblemthroughoutCanadaRaymondsaid.In2011therewere21800sexualassaultsreportedinCanada.Shenotedthatasmanyas50percentofallsexualassaultsandincidentsofdomesticviolenceinthecountrygounreportedespeciallywhenthevictimknowstheirabuser.Accordingtoselfreporteddatafromageneralsocialsurveylessthanonein10sex-ualassaultswereportedtopoliceshesaid.RaymondsaideventslikeTakeBacktheNighthelpinthecreationoftrustingpositivespaceswherepeoplewhohavesufferedabusecancomeforwardtoreportcrimesagainstthem.TakeBacktheNighteventsaretakingplaceincommunitiesaroundtheterritory.OnOct.8HayRiverwillholditsownmarchwhileinYellow-kniferesidentswilltaketothestreetsonOct.9.PhotosDaliCarmichaelPeacefulprotestorsinFortSmithgetreadytowalkinaTakeBacktheNightmarchwithhopesofdrawingawarenesstoissuesofdomesticviolencewithinthecommunity.LarissaLustymarchesinFortSmithoneofabout30participantsinthisyearswalk.TheannualeventisorganizedbySutherlandHousealocalwomenandchildrensshelter.
