NewcurriculumbringsNorthernenvironmentintofocus8TuesdayOctober72014EDUCATIONCURRICULUMPleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.FemaleAdultgreyandwhitemixLookingforanewhomeThenexttimeyouseeParisyourheartwillbebrightandgay.HercuddlesandherlittlepurrswillbrightenupyourdayByJACKDANYLCHUKAnewenvironmentalcurriculumtailoredtoNorthernexperienceswasunveiledlastweekinYellowknifeandEducationMinisterJackLaffertyhopesitwillcontributetothedevelopmentofagenerationofmoreawareandactivecitizens.MyhopeisthatwewillhaveagenerationthatismoreenvironmentallyawareespeciallywhenitcomestoenvironmentalstudiesLaf-fertysaidafterthesymbolicpresentationofa150000chequefromCIBCtotheWorldWildlifeFundofCanadaandEcologyNorth.Thetwoenvironmentalorganizationspart-neredwithNortherneducatorstodevelopSchoolsforaLivingPlanetaprogramforGrades3to8thatfocusesonclimatechangepollutionandNorthernwaters.Ithinkitwillbearealeye-openerformanystudentssaidLaffertywhothinksthenewcurriculumwillintegratewellwithourNorthernStudiesprogram.Freecurriculumandlessonplanscanbeaccessedonlineinsevenofthe11languagesoftheNorthwestTerritories.Northernresourceprojectshavereliedonsouthernexpertiseformonitoringenvironmen-talimpactssaidLaffertyandweneedourownpeopletobeinvolvedasexperts.Wereexpect-ingpositiveoutcomesfromthisstudyprogram.Intendedtoconnectstudentswiththeirimmediateenvironmentandecosystemtheprogramwaspresentedtotheannualcon-ventionoftheNWTTeachersAssociation.HollyNorrisateacheratDeninuSchoolinFortResolutionwhohelpeddevelopthecurricu-lumsaidherstudentsareoftenoutonthelandandthecoursematerialhelpsthemtobetterunderstandourlandandresourcesandhowtoprotectthemandwhatitmeanstocareforit.Coursematerialbringslocalissuesintofocusmakingstudentsmoreawareofwhathappenstoourwaterbecauseofwasteweproduceandprocesseswecanbeapartoftoprotecttheland.Studentshavebecomemoreawareofourlocallandfillsiteandhowthatcancausepollutioninthelakeandhowgar-bagecantravelintheenvironmentandaffecthuntingtrappingandthefoodweeatNorrissaid.TeachersgatherinYellowknifeforterritory-wideconferenceProfessionaldevelopmentfocusesonacclimatingeducatorstotheNorthEDUCATIONPROFESSIONALDEVELOPMENTMyhopeisthatwewillhaveagenerationthatismoreenvironmentallyawareespeciallywhenitcomestoenvironmentalstudies.MinisterJacksonLaffertyEducationCultureandEmploymentPhotoJackDanylchukPhotocourtesyofNWTTATeachersattheTerritorialEducatorsConferenceawaitDr.GaborMatesopeningaddress.ByDALICARMICHAELOver900educatorsfromacrosstheter-ritorygatheredinYellowknifelastweekfortheNorthwestTerritoriesTeachersAssocia-tionNWTTAsecondTerritorialEducatorsconference.FromSept.29toOct.1teacherswerein-vitedtoattendover140plenarysessionsandkeynotepresentationsinanefforttocontinuetheirprofessionaldevelopmentaseducatorsintheNorth.ItsimportantforteacherstostayontopofthelatestresearchinanumberofbroadareasespeciallywiththequickadvancementsinbrainresearchandhowthatconnectstolearningandthedevelopmentalaspectsoflearningsaidGaylaMeredithpresidentoftheNWTTA.Tohavealloftheteachersinonelocationtoconnectaswellthatwasaveryimportantpartofprofessionallearningandengagingwithcolleaguesndingfolksteachingdifferentsub-jectareasanddifferentbutsimilarstreamsandworkinginsimilartypesofcommunitysettings.Itallreallystrengthensthenetworkofsupportthateducatorscanreachoutto.Bothlocalandsouthernspeakersat-tendedtheconference.Oneofthemostat-tention-drawingnameswasDr.GaborMateaphysicianwhospecializesinthestudyandtreatmentofaddictionaswellasAttentionDecitDisorderwiththermlyheldbeliefintheconnectionbetweenmentalandphysi-calhealth.Heopenedtheconferencewithakeynotefocusedonstrategiesteacherscouldusetorestoreahealthybalanceinadultandchildrelationships.Thepresenterswereselectedfollowingaterritory-widesurveyaskingwhattopicsteacherswantedtoaddress.ThesessionsthatIattendedIfoundtobeofgreatvaluesaidBrentKaulbackassistantsuperintendentfortheSouthSlaveDivisionalEducationCouncilwhobothpresentedandparticipatedinthediscussions.FromapositionofsupportingAborig-inallanguageinstructorsthesessionsIattendedwerebothonfilmmaking-in-tegratingtechnologyandfilmmakingandanimationintoAboriginallanguagepro-grammingisreallyanareaweretryingtoemphasizethisyear.Thatfitverynicelywithhowwereevolving.Theconferencewasafollowupfromthelastgatheringheldin2009thoughMere-dithsaidshehopestheeventbecomesamorefrequentlearningopportunityforteachers.EducationMinisterJacksonLaffertyhashighhopesforanewschoolcurriculumthatpromisestobringaNorthernperspectiveonenvironmentalissuestogradeschoolstudents.
