MadonnaHousemissionhomendsnewlifeashostel20TuesdayFebruary32015INDUSTRYHOSPITALITYReadallaboutitThreequartersofCanadians73innon-urbancentresreadacommunitynewspaperaccordingtothe2013studyConnectingtoCanadianswithCommunityNewspapers.ThesurveywasmanagedbyTotumResearchonbehalfoftheCanadianCommunityNewspapersAssociationCCNAwiththenancialsupportoftheGovernmentofCanadathroughtheCanadaPeriodicalFundoftheDepartmentofCanadianHeritage.TelephoneinterviewswereconductedfromJanuarytoApril2013innon-urbancentresinveprovinces.Thestudywasdesignedtomeasurereadershipofcommunitynewspapersinnon-urbancentresacrossCanadaandexaminedreasonsforreadingcommunitynewspapers.Atotalof1000telephoneinterviewswereconductedwithadultsaged18orolderthatlivedinareaswithpopulationlessthan100000servedbycommunitynewspapers.FiveregionswereselectedABSKMBNorthernONNSand200interviewswereconductedwithineach.Theresponserateofthestudywas43.2.95saidtheirreasonforreadingcommunitynewspaperswasforLocalNewsorLocalEvents76arereadingfortheAdvertisingortheFlyersInserts72arelookingforClassifedAdsRealEstateorEmploymentads60readfortheEditorialThesteadyreadershipsuggeststhatcommunitynewspaperscontinuetohavestrongreadershipintodaysnewmedialandscape.Communitynewspaperscontinuetoremainrelevanttolocalresidentsfornewsinformationandadvertising.CommunitynewspaperreadershipremainsstrongByDALICARMICHAELForonly85anighttouristsvisitingFortSmithcanstayinabuildingrifewiththecommunitysmodernhistory.Asoflastweekendtheinconspicuousbuild-ingblockedbytreesatthecornerofMcDou-galandKing-knowntolocalsasMadonnaHouse-hasnallyopenedupastheareasonlyhostelunderthenameAuroraGuestHousemanagedbyJanieHobart.SomeguestswerealreadystayinginthefacilityascitizenstouredthroughitduringanopenhouseSaturday.Intotalthehostelhas17roomssomewithtwosinglebedssomewithadoubleoraqueenandoneafullsuite.Eachroomisequippedwithaminifridgeandasink.Bathroomsaresharedbetweentheguestswithwomenonthetopoorandmenonthebottom.Hobartrealizesthismightbeaninconvenienceforsomeandprovidesrobestoeachguesttoavoidanyembarrassinglate-nightrun-ins.Eachmorningacontinentalbreakfastisservedinonethehostelstwoconferenceroomsbothnamedinhonourofsomeas-pectofthebuildingshistory.OnthetopflooristheChapelRoomharkeningbacktothe1950swhentheCatholicchurchopenedthefacilities.Brothersofthechurchinhab-itedthespacethenagroupoflaymenwhofixedupthecathedralwheneveritneededfixingandwhofarmedandpickedpota-toesfromthefieldthatusedtoexistbehindtheresidence.OnthebottomooristheWALPconfer-enceroomdedicatedtotheWesternArcticLeadershipProgramthatoncebroughttopstudentsfromacrosstheNWTtoFortSmithforhighschoolandgavethemachancetoenhancetheirleadershipcapabilitieswiththesupportoflocalknowledgekeepers.HobarthasaparticularattachmenttothisroomherlatehusbandLawrieHo-bartwasoneofthefirstcoordinatorsoftheprogram.MykidsandmyhusbandspenthoursinhereattimessowedohaveaconnectiontothisbuildingHobartsaid.MykidsarequiteexcitedbecauseourcompanyiscalledHobartandMom-mykidsarepartofmycompanysotheyreexcitedthatweredoingthisprojecthere.MostrecentlytheAurorahousedamedi-calclinicontheupperlevelwhilethetownsnewhealthcarefacilitywasbeingbuiltwhichisnthardtoimaginewhenlookingatthewhitewalls.ButspendaminutetalkingtoHobartandherenthusiasmforhernewestendeavourwarmstheplacerightupnotonlybecauseofherpersonalattachmenttoitbutalsobecauseofitspotentialbenetsforthecommunity.Wehaveadesperateneedforshort-termhousingshesaidputtingonherChamberofCommercepresidentshat.ImafirmbelieverthatwhilegovernmentisthemaineconomicdriverinthecommunitytheonlywayourcommunityisgoingtogrowisifwetryanddiversifyoureconomyandIbelievethattourismisoneway.HobartistheownerofanotherbedandbreakfastinFortSmith.InnTriallaireislo-catedonPortageAve.PhotoDaliCarmichaelAuroraGuestHousemanagerJanieHobarthastransformedoneofFortSmithslandmarkbuildingsthehistoricMadonnaHousemissionhomeintotheregionsonlyhostelperfectfortravelersandvisitingworkerswhowanttosavesomecashonaccommodations.
