Allen hunts the giant Arctic snowshoe hares out on the tundra behind our house. While he is out hunting rabbits he hears strange noises. Sound carries well on the tundra and in the cold clear air. He follows his ears and finds a den in the vast and frozen tundra.

The horror of his death builds in their minds. Bear spirits rage and new demons are born and created in their imaginations as they slowly grind their way back home.

Something is dreadfully wrong. The rescuers set up their camp away from the Komatik; ghosts are pulling at their mitts and whispering in their ears. No one can say Peter T’s name, no one is sure that he will ever come if they call him, they are afraid that his spirit will return and be angry with them, trying to call him back from the underworld.
