Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating a fire that took place in Fort Chipewyan, Alta. over the weekend, destroying the property of one local public official.

Regional RCMP and the local volunteer fire department were called just after 3:00 a.m. on Oct. 18 to attend to a structure fire at Chadi’s Restaurant, which is owned by municipal councillor John Chadi.

By the time fire and police crews arrived at the blaze, they were too late to save the building.

“When the emergency services people arrived on scene the entire roof of the building was fully engulfed in flames,” said Cpl. George Cameron with the Wood Buffalo RCMP department. “Through the efforts of the Fort Chipewyan Volunteer Fire Department the fire was extinguished and no other buildings were affected.”

The fire was completely put out by morning.

According to Cameron, the restaurant was totally destroyed.

No one was injured by the blaze, he noted, a silver lining to the unfortunate situation.

“In conjunction with the RCMP, the fire scene examiner for the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo attended the scene,” Cameron said, noting that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Cameron would not confirm whether the fire was thought to be suspicious in nature, though he did say the possibility would be examined during the investigation.

Fort Chipewyan RCMP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the fire or who might have any information regarding it to contact the detachment at 780-697-3665.
