It was a long, busy weekend of rock throwing and hard sweeping as four rinks from around the NWT gathered in Fort Smith for the territory’s mixed doubles curling championship tournament, but only one team could claim victory.

In the end, Team Moss from Yellowknife dominated, winning 3-2 against Hay River’s Team Gagnier in a final match the evening of Mar. 14.

The winners from this weekend will head to Ontario next November to participate in the national mixed championship games.

This is a banner year for the national tournament, said curling official Janie Hobart.

For the first time in its history, all 14 members of the Canadian Curling Association will be allowed direct entry into the games.

The decision will help teams from small regions break down a barrier that had previously blocked some from the competition.
