6TuesdayApril92013WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.Paulisaveryadoptableyoungmalecat.Histuxedocoatandfriendlynaturemakeshimagreatadditiontoanyhome.Adopthimtoday.Pleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.ByMEAGANWOHLBERGTruckscouldsoonbehaulingnaturalgasintotheenergy-chokedcom-munityofInuvikthroughanewpilotprojectbyNTEnergythecompanyan-nouncedlastweekduringtheNWTChamberofCom-merceAGMinYellowknife.ThecompanysaidithopestohaveliquefiednaturalgasLNGpow-eringupto70percentofthetownselectricityneedsbysummer2014phasingoutthedieseldependencyforcedontothecommu-nityfollowingtheprema-turefailureofInuvikGasLtd.sIkhilwell.AndrewStewartmanagerofbusinessdevelopmentatNTEnergysaidthecom-panyisintheprocessofcollectingbidsfromtrans-portcompaniestofindoutwhetherornottruckinginLNGismoreeconomicallyviablethanstayingondie-selgeneratedelectricity.Weretestingthemarketnow...toseewhatthelandedcostwouldtranslatetoforLNGsoatthisstagewecantsaythatweregoingtogofullboreonithesaid.Sofarthecompanyhasreceivedsevenbidsfortransport.Theyvealsoputoutatenderforthevapor-izationandstorageequip-mentthatwillbeneededonsiteinInuvik.DependingonwhatthosecostsadduptowellknowhowitstacksupagainstdieselStew-artsaid.Thecompanyshopingtohavetheprojectsortedoutbythefall.WellneedtomakeacallinthenextthreetofourmonthsStewartsaid.Theconstructionseasonisfastapproachingsoifwecantgetcomfortablewiththepricingontransportationandthecostoftheequip-mentandthecivilworksNTEnergyplanstotrucknaturalgasintoInuvikPilotprojecthopestodisplace70percentofdieselgeneratedelectricityandprepthatsneededtoinstallitthenwellpushpause.Butthegoalistohavethisimplementedbythefallandbeatleastinthecommissioningphasewherewereusingsomeliquefiednaturalgasandoffsettingsomedieselelectricity.heatinginthecommunity.Inuvikresidentshavebeenpaying35.44GJforsyn-theticnaturalgasheatingsinceFeb.1-nearlydoublewhattheypaidpreviouslyfornaturalgasfromIkhil.AndifsuccessfulitcouldspreadtootherTruckedgaswouldrequirestorageNTEnergyrstbroughtuptheideaoftruckingfuelinitsDecember2012Con-ceptStudyofInuvikEnergySupplyOptionsreport.ThereportstatesthatLNGtruckedintothecommunitycouldprovidethebase-loadelectricitysupplytothetwoNorthwestTerritoriesPowerCorp.NTPCgeneratorsinInuvikwithupto80percentoftheirannualfuelrequirements.ThegaswillmostlikelybetruckedtoInuvikfromBCorAlbertaorbargedfromtheWestCoastaccordingtothereportwiththeLNGbeingvaporizedorheatedtogasforminInuvikandpumpeddirectlyintotheNTPCgasplantordistributionnetwork.Inafull-outLNGscenariotransportingfueltoInuvikbytruckorbargewouldre-quirestoragetwiceayearwhenbothriverferriesandicebridgesontheDemp-sterHighwayHwy8arenon-operationalaccordingtotheNTEnergyreport.Overthelast10yearsroadaccesswasclosedforupto53daysinthespringand39daysinthefall.Inordertoaccommodatethetownduringtheseperi-odsfuelwouldneedtobestoredinthecommunitymeaningtheneedforsomenewinfrastructure.InfrastructureforheatingdemandinInuvikwouldbesignicantthereportstates.Alandareaofupto6000m2wouldberequiredforunload-ingstoringandvaporizingLNGfordistribution.IfLNGwererelieduponforheatingandelectricitystorageofap-proximately65000GJor2700m3ofLNGwouldberequiredtoaddressDempsterHighwayclosuresrivercrossingsinthefallandspring.Capitalinvestmentinstor-ageforLNGdesignatedforelectricityisestimatedtobeinthe3GJrangewhilestor-ageforheatismorelikelytobecloserto10GJaccord-ingtothecompany.WhilestorageisamustthecompanystressedtheneedforreducingseasonalroadoutagesontheDemp-sterHighwayattheMacken-zieRivercrossingnearFortMcPhersonandPeelRivernearTsiigehtchic.Aswellthegeneralcondi-tionandupkeepofHighway8shouldbereviewedforap-provedandproposedLNGtrucktransportitadded.ButforthepilotprojectStewartsaidthegoalisjusttohaveamodeststoragesys-temforoneortwotrucksworthofgasalongwiththevaporizertoconvertittouseLNGwheneverpossibleandhavethedieselbackupkickinwhennecessary.Ifandwhenwehavegasandthesupplychainisopen-meaningtheferrysrunningandtheroadisthickenoughontheferrycrossingsandDempsterHighwayisfullyoperational-wellbetryingtogetLNGuptheroad.WhenwedonthaveLNGwelljustburndiesel...AnyLNGwegetwecanimprovethecostsitu-ationforelectricity.AgreenersaferoptionStewartsaidthereisan-otherbenettousingLNGcomparedtodieselandthatsareductioningreenhousegasGHGemissions.Itburnsabout75percentoftheGHGemissionsequiv-alenttodieselsoitisanen-vironmentalimprovement.Itsamodestonebutitisanimprovement.Ifyouhadthatpluseconomicsthatgotyouunderthelandedcostofdieselthenitsabenettothewholethermalratezonehesaid.Aswellhesaidtheprod-uctisinasaferstatefortrans-portingthanotherfuels.Su-percooleddownto-162Cifsomeoneweretotakealitciga-retteanddipitinthefuelthecigarettewouldsimplyfreeze.Yourenotgoingtoendupwithfuelspillsorcontamina-tionandaslongasyoudonthaveaperfectmixofairandheatedgasthenyoudontevenhaveaproductthatscombus-tible.Soitisactuallyquiteasafeproducttotransport.FutureLNGfacilitycouldpowerregionWhileitmayseemironictohaveLNGtruckedintoacom-munitysurroundedbyeldscontainingtrillionsofcubicfeetofnaturalgasStewartsaidthetruckingprojectshouldbeviewedasashorttomid-termoptionforthecommunity.InthemediumtolongtermIthinkeverybodysobjectiveistondalocalNWT-basedsupplysourceforgas.Unfortu-natelywecantwaithesaid.Atthisstagethereisnogassupplyavailable.ThatbeingsaidanLNGfacilityfortheregionisbeingconsideredapossibilityforthelong-term.UntilthenthetruckingsolutionwillmaintaintheexistinggasinfrastructureandkeepthedoorsopenforalocalsourceifandwhenitemergesStewartsaid.Inthemeantimewecanusesomethingthats25percentbetteronanemissionsbasisthandieselandhope-fullyisacost-savingmea-surehesaid.IndustryOilGasInthemediumtolongtermIthinkevery-bodysobjectiveistondalocalNWT-basedsupplysourceforgas.Unfortunatelywecantwait.Atthisstagethereisnogassupplyavailable.AndrewStewartNTEnergyWhilethepilotprojectfo-cusessolelyonelectricityitcouldholdimportantim-plicationsforthefutureofthermalcommunities.HopefullythisworksandthenwecanlooktootherplacesStewartsaid.PhotoGordMcKennaNTEnergysproposedpilotprojectlookstotransportliqueednaturalgasbytruckuptheDempsterHighwayshownabovetoInuvik.ThecompanyhopestodisplacethemajorityofdieselbeingconsumedforpowerinthecommunitywhichhasbeenchokedofnaturalgassincethecollapseoftheIkhilwell.
