InfrastructureChurches11TuesdayMarch252014SuzieNapayokInuktitutSuzieNapayokwasborninIqaluitandlivesinYellowknife.HermotherisfromtheCurleyclanandherfatherisfromthelargefamilyofJohnEllandQuunguliqofSouthamptonIsland.HerlanguageisInuktitutandshebelievesthattokeeplanguagesalivewemustspeakittoourchildrenneighbourscoworkersandthroughoutourcommunities.Togetherwecanstrengthenourlanguages.NORTHERNVOICESIntheNorthwestTerritoriesournorthernvoicesareimportant.ThroughoutourvastterritorynineofcialAboriginallanguagesarespokenwithpride.Tocelebratethisdiversityregionallanguagecommunitiesnominatedindividualscommittedtocultivatingournorthernvoices.ThesechampionsareleadersinourAboriginallanguagescommunityandwethankthemfortheireffortsandcontributionstothesurvivalofourlanguages.ByNATHALIEHEIBERG-HARRISONInuviksIglooChurchisfacingclosureamidstris-ingheatingcostsinthecommunity.Thechurchsheatingbillshavedoubledsincelastyearandnowthecongregationisconfrontedwithadifcultsituationndtheextracashorclosethedoorsandfacepossiblestructuraldamagetothe54year-oldspiritualcentreandiconictouristdestination.Withasmallcongrega-tionandlittlefundstodrawfromwecannotmaintainitnanciallyexplainedpa-rishionerBerniceLavoie.Weareatriskofdoingstructuraldamageshouldweturnofftheheatwhichliterallyputsusinacatch-22situation.LavoieisspearheadingafundraisingefforttohelppayfortheOurLadyofVictoryChurchsheatingbill.TheCatholicchurchsbillforDecember2013ranupto3000.Afterthatvolunteersre-insulatedthecircumfer-enceofthechurchwhichhelpedreducethebillto2000thefollowingmonth.Theyalsoreducedtheirfuelconsumptionfrom135GJInuviksiconicIglooChurchcouldclosedoorsto80GJbetweenJanuary2013and2014.Thatstoheatthebuild-ingandwereonlyusingitonedayaweekLavoiesaid.Withoutthereducedbillduetotheaddedinsulationthechurchwouldlikelyhavehadtoclose.LavoieSheilaOKaneMikiOKaneFatherMagnusChilakaandLavoieshusbandJoearenowpartofanefforttoraiseextrafundstokeepthechurchopen.Theirrstprojectistosellcommunityspiritcalendarswhichlocalbusinessescanbuyadvertisingblocksinatacostofbetween40and90.Individualscanpur-chasecalendarsfor10andareentitledtolistuptofourbirthdaysanniversariesormemorials.Wearejuststartingthisfun-draiserbutifallgoeswellwehavethepotentialtoraiseafewthousanddollarsLavoiesaid.Basicallyitsjusttosup-portthechurch.Wedontwanttoseeitclosebecauseofthedamageitcoulddoespeciallyinthemiddleofwinter.Lavoiesaidwhilesheiscoordinatingthefundraisingeffortsheishopingtondvolunteercanvasserstohelp.Imcountingoneverybodyelsetopitchinshesaid.ThecalendarwillspanfromSeptember2014toAu-gust2015.Volunteerswillbepre-sellingcalendarsatInu-viksNorthMartonMar.29.OurLadyofVictoryCatholicChurchofciallyopenedAugust51960.SheilaOKaneleftMikiOKaneFatherMagnusChilakaJoeLavoieandBerniceLavoiestandinInuviks54year-oldIglooChurch.ThegroupisleadingafundraisingefforttohelpkeepthedoorsoftheOurLadyofVictoryChurchopen.IglooChurchfactsThechurchsoriginalde-signerbrotherMauriceLarocquehadaGrade5education.ItsrstpastorFatherJulesAdamwasborninCarlsbourgBelgiumandspenttimeinnumerousNortherncommu-nitiesincludingTuktoyaktukAklavikandFortSimpson.ItistheonlylargebuildinginInuviknotbuiltonpilings.MostofitslumberwascutinFortSmithandhauleduptheMackenzieRiverbybarge.Itmeasures75feetindiameterandseatsupto350people.ThechurchsdomeismeanttorepresentoneGodwhileitsthreeporchesrepresenttheholytrinityandits12mainarchesrepresentthe12apostlesofChrist.PhotoNathalieHeiberg-HarrisonLanguageunitesyouthandeldersYouthandeldersinFortSmithgottospendqualitytimetogethermakingdreamcatchersandlearninghowtoplayDenehandgameslastweekendthankstoaneventputonbySmithsLandingFirstNationtocelebrateChipewyanduringAboriginalLanguageMonth.TopEldersMaryAbrahamandMacPaulettemakedreamcatchers.BelowlefttorightTheronManuelandDaylenPowderaddcolourfulbeadstotheirdreamcatchers.PhotosMariaChurch
