RecreationandwellnesscanbekeytolearningsoKeyanoisproudtobecontributingtoafunandlivelyareaforchildreninFortChipewyan.ThereseGreenwoodKeyanoCollege8TuesdayJuly222014DonSandraJaquearedelightedtoannouncethearrivalofanothergrandson.DevinJeromeJuly05201410lbs.8oz.FortSmithHealthCentreParentsJannaJaqueOwenMacDonaldareveryhappywiththelatestaddition.Elliaged2isadjustingwelltohernewroleasbigsister.ManythankstomidwifeLesleyPauletteandsafeandsuccessfuldeliveryWearesopleased.....MidwifebringspracticetonorthernAlbertaHealthWellnessMaternityCareByDALICARMICHAELWhenTamarQuistopenedhermidwiferypracticeatthebeginningofAprilshebroughtwithheraccesstoalternativecareforexpect-antmotherspreviouslyun-availableinnorthernAlberta.Insomeisolatedcommu-nitiesimportantdecisions-likewhetherornottohaveanaturalbirth-areoftenpre-determinedbytheresourcesorlackthereofavailableinthecommunity.Byoffer-ingpregnantwomenoptionsfortheirprenatalandpost-partumhealthcareQuistisultimatelygivingthemmoreautonomy.Theresalotofdecisionmakingforparents-midwiferyreallysupportswomenandthefamilyinthechoicestheywanttomakeandIthinkthatcansometimesfallshortinaNorth-erncommunityQuistsaid.QuistiscontractedthroughthePrimaryCareNetworktoruntwomidwiferyclinicsinpartnershipwithAlbertaHealthServicesAHSinHighLevelandLaCrete.Shealsooffersout-of-ofceservicestosur-roundingcommunitieswork-ingwithlocalphysiciansandnursestocreateacollaborativeapproachtohealthcare.MidwiferyisoneofthefastestgrowingcareersinAlberta.AccordingtoAHStherearenowabout80mid-wivespracticinginAlbertaupfrom25in2009.TheprovinceinvestedintheindustryinJunelastyearwhenathree-year37-mil-lionagreementwasmadebe-tweenAHSandtheAlbertaAssociationofMidwivestoincreasematernityservicesaninitiativethathasmostlybenetedsoutherncommu-nitiesuntilnow.WhenQuistpresentedtousweinitiallywerentlook-ingforherwehaveafantas-ticgroupofphysiciansthatprovideexcellentobstetricalcareheresaidAngieManndirectorofclinicaloperationsforAHSinareaonewhichcoversacatchmentareanorthofEdmontontotheAlbertaNWTborder.WeareveryfortunatetohavetheopportunitytohaveamidwifeinareaoneandwearetherstareainthewholenorthzoneMannsaidadd-ingthatshelooksforwardtohavingmoremidwivesintheregion.Theaveragepractitio-nerisregulatedtoworkwithupto40clientsannuallyaslimgurecomparedtotherecorded605livebirthsinHighLevelalonelastyear.AdvantagesofmidwiferyTherearesomeadvan-tagesmidwivescanhaveoverdoctorsespeciallyinisolatedcommunities.Theycanoverseehomebirthsandwaterbirthsinadditiontothoseoccurringin-hospital.AccordingtoQuistoneofherbiggestassetsisinprovidingcarefollowingpregnancy.Oftenafteryouhaveababyyourejustinhospitalandyoudontgetyournextfollowup...withaprimarycareprovideruntilsixweeksaftergivingbirthshesaid.Ifollowupwithmyclientsintherst24hoursaftertheygohome.PhysicianscanalsorefertheirclientstohertohelpwithbreastfeedingMannsaid.Werestartingabreast-feedinghealthclinicaswellintheareaandshestakingtheleadonthatshellpro-videone-on-onecounsellingtomothers.MarthadeBoerwasoneofQuistsrsthomebirthclientsinthenorth.ShealsohappenstobeQuistssister-in-law.DeBoerdecidedearlyonthatshewantedanaturalpregnancywithouttreat-mentsunlesstheyweredeemedmedicallynecessary.SheoptedtouseQuistsser-vices-thathermidwifehap-penedtobefamilywasjusticingonthecake.WhenIhadheartburnduringmypregnancyinsteadofgivingmeaprescriptionrightawayshewouldsug-gestmorenaturalthingsrstlikesuckingonrawalmondsorexercisingmoreanditworkeddeBoersaid.IthinkitsgreatthatpeoplehavetheoptionnowheredeBoersaid.FromwhatIveheardfrompeoplethathaveusedheristhattheyreallylikeherandthediffer-entapproachtocare.MarthadeBoerleftholdshersonwhowasdeliveredathomeonMay20bymidwifeTamarQuistright.QuististherstmidwifetooffermaternalcareservicestomothersinnorthernAlberta.NewplaygroundforFortChipewyanyouthByMARIACHURCHFortChipewyansyoung-stersareslidingswingingandzippingafterthecom-munitycuttheribbononitsnewplaygroundearlierthissummer.ThenewsetofslidesswingsandaminiziplineliesbehindKeyanoCollegescommunitycampusonthecornerofMcDermotAve.andPaquetteSt.Fundsforthemorethan150000recreationproj-ectweresplitbetweenthecollegethemunicipalityofWoodBuffaloandalocalcommunitygroup.ThereseGreenwoodKey-anosvicepresidentofAd-vancementandExternalAffairsmadethetripouttoFortChipewyanfortheribboncuttingceremonyinJune.Wewerejustdelightedbecauseduringtheribboncuttingceremonytherewerekidsridingupontheirbikesandthenjumpingupontheslidesandmonkeybarsandclimbingallovertheplacewhilethespeechesweregoingon.ItwasfantasticshetoldTheJournal.WoodBuffalocouncillorsJuliaCardinalandKeithMc-GrathWoodBuffaloMLAMikeAllenandRichardStarkeAlbertaMinisterofSportsRecreationPlaygroundsTourismParksandRecre-ationwereamongthe30orsopresentfortheopening.Thebrightly-colouredplay-groundfeaturesclassicslikeaswingsetmonkeybarsslideandsee-sawalongwithatic-tac-toegamemultiplebridgesandachild-sizedziplineforthemoreadventur-ousyouth.Greenwoodsaidthecol-legecommittedtobuildingtherecreationalparkbecauseitscommunitycampuswhichopenedin2011wasbuiltonanoldplaygroundsite.ThenewparkisonKeyanolandthatthecollegedonatedback
