LiteracyweekhighlightsimportanceofhealthknowledgeTuesdaySeptember23201411EDUCATIONLITERACYKaesersStoresLtd.76-80BreynatSt.FortSmithNT867-872-2345KaeserssupportsisforisforisforisforHoursMonday-Friday9am-7pmThursday9am-8pmSaturday9am-6pmSunday12pm-5pm2014NWTLITERACYWEEKwww.auroracollege.nt.caNWTLiteracyWeek2014September22-26ByDALICARMICHAELIncreasingthestateofhealthliteracywithintheterritorycanhaveagreatimpactonapersonsqualityoflifeandcanhelptoeliminatepatternsofsocio-economicstrug-gleaccordingtotheorganizationbehindNWTsannualLiteracyWeek.TheNWTLiteracyCouncileventhascommunitiesfromInuviktoEnterpriseacknowledgingtheweekwithspecialac-tivitiesscheduledfromSept.21to27en-couragingresidentstolearnaboutusingliteracyasitimpactsaccesstoinformationrequiredforpeopletomakeinformedde-cisionsabouttheirhealth.WereallawareofthecycleofpovertyandtheeffectsofresidentialschoolsonfamiliesintheNWTandwedohavepettycrimeratesandspousalabusesaidMi-chaelCorbettexecutivedirectoroftheNWTLiteracyCouncil.Literacyisoneofthefactorsthatcanbreaksomeofthecy-clicalthingsthataregoingon.AccordingtothecounciltherearemanylinkagesbetweenhealthypeopleandliteracyReadingtoyourbabiesexcitingbraincellsitgoesonsothatwhenkidsgointoschoolandtheyhitthatnextphasetheydohavethebeginningsofliteracyCorbettsaid.Kidsandadultsalikeneedtobeingoodhealthtobeabletolearnandretaininfor-mationwhichcomesdowntohavingfam-ilieslearnabouthealthyhabitstogether.Onceyoutharewellontheirwaytoget-tingagoodeducationandmaintainingabalancedlifestyletheyaremorelikelytosucceedprofessionallyandattaingainfulemploymenteliminatingsomeofthesocio-economicproblemsthatplagueresidentsoftheNorth.FinallyCorbettsaiddevelopinganindividualsliteracyisintegralsoanyonewhoneedshealthcareisabletoaccessunderstandanduseitproperly.Asindividualsincreasetheireducationandliteracyrateshealthcarebecomesallthemoreeffective.OneofourthemesisthatliteracychangeslivesandwerereallytryingtomakethatknowledgeknownCorbettsaid.Weresee-ingalotofpeopleespeciallyyoungmoth-ersandyoungparentswhoarelookingatthatespeciallywithalotoftheeconomicdevelopmentopportunitiesthatarehap-peningthroughouttheNorthnowintermsofnaturalresources.ProblemswithmessagingAccordingtoCorbettoneofthechallengesthecouncilfaceswithhealthpromotionandgeneralliteracyintheNWTiscreatingef-fectivelearningresourcesintheterritorys11distinctofciallanguages.NWTLanguagesCommissionerSnookieCatholiquesaidthatwhilethecampaignmighthaveapositiveimpactonyoungergen-erationsthescopeofthemessagingneedstobewidenedinordertohelpallpeopleintheNorth.Thesituationisespeciallyurgentforelderswhoneedincreasingaccesstocareastheyageandprimarilycommunicateorallyintheirtraditionallanguages.IntermsofwrittenliteracywiththeDenelanguagesnotverymanypeopleunderstandorcanreadthemCatholiquesaid.Oneso-lutionsheproposedistouploadvideoandaudiolesonlinethatreciteinformationinthevariouslanguages.Sheplanstoimple-mentthisstrategyforthelanguagecommis-sionswebsiteinthenearfuture.EvenbetterthanthatCatholiquesaidwouldbetheintroductionofqualiedinter-preterstocommunitiestoprovidethephysi-calpresenceofapersonwhoworkswithcli-entsintheirownlanguages.Thereneedstobesomesortofservicesothatsomebodycangoinandexplaintotheeldershowdiabetesiscreatedthiswillhap-pentoyouwhenyoufeedyourgrandchildrenthisCatholiquesaid.WerethinkinginWest-ernthoughtswherewethinkthateverybodycanreadandwriteintheDenelanguage.Fortipsonincreasingyourownhealthlit-eracyheadtohttpwww.nwt.literacy.caNWT20Literacy20Week.VolunteerswiththeNWTLiteracyCouncilleadasessionteachingcommunitymembersinYellowknifeabouttheimportanceofhealthliteracy.PhotocourtesyofNWTLiteracyCouncil
