Policepoochbreakingdownbarriersinsmallcommunities12TuesdayOctober282014NORTHERNERSRCMPByDALICARMICHAELChildrengigglingmightnotbetherstsoundyoudexpecttohearuponenteringapolicestationbutthankstoonespecialK-9unitithasbecomethenormfortheRCMPdepartmentinBehchoko.AtleastonceadaylocalkidswillentertheBehchokoRCMPbuildinglookingtoplaywithPaddyCakesapopularpupwhotravelsev-erywherewithherownerCst.SethThomas.Sheisinsuchhighdemandthatthedepart-menthasasignonthefrontdoorlettinglocalsknowwhenMissCakesisonduty.ItsgreatbecauseinthepastpeopledidntreallycometousThomassaid.Thisiskindofbreakingthebarriersothattheycanun-derstandthisisaplacetheycancomewhentheyneedhelpthatwereactuallypartofthecommunityandtonotbeintimidatedorafraidofus.Theanimal-lovingpoliceofcertookinPaddyCakestwoyearsagowhilehewasstationedasareliefofcerinWhatiwhereshewasastraylivingunderneaththelocaldetachment.Sinceformingtheirbondtheyhavetrav-eledtheNorthtogethercreatingbetterre-lationshipsbetweenthewRCMPandcom-munitiesfromBehchokotoSachsHarbour.Shesknownbyeverybodyinthecommu-nitieshesaid.OnetimeIshowedupinTu-litaandIdidnthaveherandthesetwolittlegirlswereveryquiettheywerewhisperingtoeachotherbecausetheywerekindofshyandnallytheycameoverandtheyaskedWheresPaddyCakesIhadntbeenthereinveorsixmonthsandtheyrememberedher.Inadditiontocreatingrelationshipsbe-tweenthepoliceandtheirresidentsPaddyCakesworkswithvictimsofabusetoprovideasenseofcomfortwhiletheydiscusssome-timestraumaticexperiences.KnowingthatsomechildrenareafraidofdogsThomasnamedPaddyCakesafterthechildrensgametofurthercreateasenseofeasewiththekids.WhilePaddyCakesisbelovedbymanythroughouttheNorthherbondisstrongestwithherkind-heartedowner.Shebasicallyadoptedmehesaid.ByDALICARMICHAELThedaybeforegunshotsrangoutthroughOttawabringingthecapitalcitytoastand-stillastarklydifferentvibewasintheairasCanadianheroesfromalloverthecountrygatheredinthecitytoreceiveaccoladesfortheiractsofcourage.Ofthe45decorationsgivensixmenfromtheNWTwererecognizedwithMedalsofBrav-eryhandedoutbyGovernorGeneralDavidJohnstonforsavingthelivesofotherswhileputtingthemselvesinhazardoussituations.MikeSharpeofHayRiverwasrecognizedforhisquickthinkingandswiftactioninhelpingthedriverofarolled-overtractor-trailerafteritwascutoffbyathirdpartyalongHighway63justoutsideofWander-ingRiverAlta.inSeptember2009.Itwasaroll-overtransporttrailerofjetfuelthatgotcutofftheroadSharpesaid.IwatchedithappeninfrontofmeanditstoppedandatthatpointIlookedatthesit-uation.IthoughtifthereseverachanceformetohelphimitsgoingtoberightnowsoIactedIranuptothetruckandfoundthatthedriverwastrappedinsideandhecouldntgetout.Itriedkickinginthefrontwindowandthatdidntwork-theplasticwasjustbow-inglikeabubble-andthenhepusheduponthetopofthedoorandsaidthedoorsstuck.Sharpejimmiedtheexhaustpipeafterno-ticingthatitwasblockingthedoorreleasingthedriverfromhisburningvehicle.HonestlyIkeptthinkingIhopethistruckdoesntblowupyetSharpesaid.IlookedupandallIsawwasbrightorangesmokeandamesandIlookedtotherightandjustsawopenairfreedomsoquitehonestlyIwashopingthatthetruckwouldntexplodebe-forewegotoutofthere.OncethedriverwasabletoescapethetwomenhoppedintoSharpestruckandbackedawayfromthesceneatwhichpointSharpesaidhewasworkingoninstinctnotlogic.Theycalledthelocalfirede-partmentforassistanceandjustmomentslatertheentirejet-fuelfilledtruckwasen-gulfedinflames.SharpewhonowoperatesasatravelinggrocerintheSouthSlavesaidtheincidenthadastrongimpactonhim.Itmakesyouopenyoureyestothevul-nerabilityofjustdrivingandnowbeingontheroadeverydayitmakesyoualotmoreawarehesaid.Iusedtospeedbeforethisaccidentbutnownoway.HadIbeenspeed-ingatthetimeIwouldhavebeeninvolvedintheaccident.YellowknifersKentDavidBissellRoderickBruceBrownMatthewLewinGrogonoMikeJosephMurphyandAllanRandalShorttwerealsorecognizedfortheirbraveactionsin2011whentheywerepartofacrewthatrushedtoevacuatethesurvivorsofacrashedoatplanewithoutanythoughtfortheirownlives.Asheavysmokespoutedfromtheengineandleakingfuelcreatedanever-increasingriskofexplosiontheybroughtthetwosurvivingpassengerstosafety.AbittersweetvisittothecapitalSharpewashonouredtoytoOttawafortheceremony.Itsareallybigdedicationsoyouwearitwithabitofpridehesaid.Imgladtoreceiveit.ItwasnicetomeettheGovernorGeneraltogoseehisresidenceandenjoyOttawaalittlebit.ThetriplostsomeofitsappealthoughaftertheeventsofTuesdaymorningSharpesaidwhenhewasinformedoftheshootingsthattookplaceonParliamentHillandthesurroundingareanearhishotel.ThereweregunmenrunningaroundOt-tawaandwewerestayingrightbesidetheRideauCentrewhichwasonlockdownhesaid.Whenwewerepackingupourcarthewholeparkinglotwasfullwitheveryonethatwassupposedtobeinthemall.HamiltonsoldierCpl.NathanCirillowhowasonguardattheWarMemorialwaskilledthatdayaswassuspectedgunmanMichaelZehaf-Bibeau.SixNWTheroesrecognizedwithmedalsofbraveryNORTHERNERSHEROESPaddyCakesisonepopularpupwithfansfromBehchokotoSachsHarbour.MikeSharpeofHayRiveracceptshisMedalofBraveryfromGovernorGeneralDavidJohnstoninOttawaOct.21.KentBissellleftRoderickBrownMatthewGrogonoMikeMurphyGovernorGeneralDavidJohnstonSergioRodriguezSanchezAlla
