16TuesdayMay72013www.ntpc.comAPOWERFULANNIVERSARYIn1948theminingindustrynearYellowknifewasbooming.TosupplythenewdemandforelectricitytheGovernmentofCanadasetuptheNorthwestTerritoriesPowerCommission.SoonaftertheneworganizationwassupplyingpoweracrosstheNWTandYukonandwasrenamedtheNorthernCanadaPowerCommission.FortyyearslatertheNWTpowerfacilitieswereacquiredbytheterritorialgovernmentandtheNorthwestTerritoriesPowerCorporationwasborn.For25yearspowerintheNWThasbeensuppliedbyanorthern-ownedutility.Overthepastquarter-centurywevecreatedjobsfornorthernersin27communitiesacrosstheNorthwestTerritories.Toour179employeesyourprofessionalismanddedicationisthecoreofourbusinesstothepeopleoftheNorththankyouandwelookforwardtoourfuturetogether.EducationHeritageByRENEFRANCOEURAformerDehchograndchiefislookingforwardtohelpingpreserveAboriginalheritageaftergraduatingfromamuseumpracticesprogramrunbytheCana-dianMuseumofCiviliza-tioninOttawalastmonth.GerryAntoinefromtheLiidliiKueFirstNationinFortSimpsonreceivedhiscertificatefromtheAboriginalTrainingPro-graminMuseumPracticesonApr.19alongwithfourotherinterns.ItwasgreatgoingbacktoschoolAntoine58said.Itofferedanincred-ibleopportunitytoaffirmallthosethingstheeldershavetaughtme....EventhoughIwenttoresiden-tialschoolandwasfosteredoutIvebeenmentoredbyeldersallmylifeandtheyprovidedtraditionaleducationandthatswhyIvealwaysbeeninterestedintellingourhistoryourcultureourlanguagejusttellingitlikeitis.AntoinewhohasspentthelastthreesummersworkingasaninterpreterattheNahanniNationalParkReserveisalreadyinvolvedincommunityandculturaldevelopmentinFortSimp-son.ArmedwiththisnewcertificatehehopestoworkmoreextensivelyinthoseareasandwiththeFortSimpsonHistoricalSocietywhichiscurrentlybuildingaHeritageCentre.Antoineheardabouttheprogramwhichhashadover100participantssincebeginningin1993throughFormergrandchiefgraduatesfrommuseumprogramthegrapevineanddecidedtoapplyearlyin2012.IwantedtolearnmoreandevennowImtalkingaboutcontinuingtofurthermyeducationandgoformydegreehesaid.HemovedtotheOttawaareainSeptemberfortheeight-monthprogramthatoffersprofessionalandtechnicaltrainingtoFirstNationsMtisandInuitparticipants.Thatwasthehardestpartleavingmyfamilyforthattimebutyouhavetobeopenmindedhesaid.AntoinelivedintheoldpartofGatineauQuebecwhilestudyingandpickedupanumberofFrenchles-sonsaddingtotheoverallexperiencehesaid.IhadaFrenchland-lordandIwasimmersedinFrenchandthatwasreallyhelpfulbecausethemuseumworkedinbothFrenchandEnglishandIwasabletoseehowdif-ferentlanguagesinterpretartefacts.Hetookpartinfivepract-icumseachlastingfourtofiveweeksunderdifferentdivisionsattheCanadianMuseumofCivilizationandtheCanadianWarMuseum.PhotoPerryZavitzHisfavouritewasthelastworkplacementinthein-terpretationsectionofthe2000square-metreexhi-bitionspaceknownastheFirstPeoplesHall.Iwasassignedtosug-gestliveinterpretativeac-tivitiesfortheFirstPeoplesHall.OneoftheactivitiesIsuggestedwastheideatohostawelcomingcere-mony.Youneedtohavealivepresenceoftheindig-enouspeopleandsincethemuseumisintheAlgonquinterritoryitshouldbethosepeoplethatarewelcomingvisitorsintothespaceAntoinesaid.Thewel-comingceremonywouldbebriefIsuggestedwithlivehumaninteractionandpeoplebeinginvitedintothehall.AntoinehasalreadybeenaskedtousehisnewskillsatthePrinceofWalesNorthernHeritageCentreinYellowknifehesaid.InDecemberactuallyIwentthereandwasasound-ingboardifyouwillfortheDehchopartoftheirdioramaexhibitionseries.AntoinearrivedbackintheNWTatthestartofMayandnowplanstospendsometimewithhisfamily.GerryAntoinecelebrateshisgraduationinOttawafromamuseumtrainingprogram.
