29TuesdayJune182013HAVEYOUHEARDWeinvestinandworkwiththecommunitiesandpeoplesofourregion.BeforeSyncrudeputashovelinthegroundwepromisedtosharethebenetsofouroperationswithourAboriginalneighbours.Wevekeptthatpromise.TodaywereoneofCanadaslargestemployersofAboriginalpeopleandproudinvestorsinthefuturesofstudentslikeTabithaSyncrudeAboriginalTradesPreparationProgramgraduateandSyncrudeemployee.June21isNationalAboriginalDayouropportunitytothankourAboriginalneighboursforhelpingusbuildourbusinessandstrengthenoursharedcommunities.Learnmoreatsyncrude.caTheSyncrudeProjectisajointventureundertakingamongCanadianOilSandsPartnership1ImperialOilResourcesMocalEnergyLimitedMurphyOilCompanyLtd.NexenOilSandsPartnershipSinopecOilSandsPartnershipandSuncorEnergyVenturesPartnership.ByRENEFRANCOEURAnewcommitteeisbeingformedledbytheNorthwestTerritoriestoexplorewaystohostacompetitionforthesixkeysportingeventscurrentlyexcludedfromthe2016ArcticWinterGamesinNuukGreenland.Dogmushingcurlinggymnasticsspeedskatingmidgethockeyandgureskatinghavetraditionallybeenapartofthegameslineupbutwillnotbeheldin2016duetothelackoffa-cilitiesinGreenland.TheArcticWinterGamesInternationalCommitteerecentlyannounceditwillworktogetherwiththeministersresponsibleforsportinYukontheNWTandNunavutalongwiththelieutenantgovernorofAlaskatoensuretheseeventshappenatasepa-ratemulti-sportcompeti-tionevenifitwontbeattheofcialgames.Thecommitteewhichhasyettobeappointedwilllookatnewjurisdic-tionstohosttheelimi-natedeventsincludingpossiblelocationsintheNWTYukonNunavutandIceland.ItwillconsistofonememberfromeachofthesixjurisdictionswhomakeupthepermanentpartnershipoftheArcticWinterGames.WereexcitedforourathletesandthattheywillstillbeabletocompetetheGNWTsMunicipalandCommunityAffairsMinisterRobertMcLeodtoldTheJournal.Itsourgoaltoseethisthroughtotheendandmakesureithappens.AccordingtoMcLeod350athletesandcoacheshavebeencutoutofthegamesduetothemissingevents.Thatsahugenumber.AlloftheNorthernpoliti-calleaderswereconcernedaboutthatandwevebeenbrainstormingaboutthisforawhilenowhesaid.McLeodsaidhesbeenmeetingwithterritorialsportorganizationswhoarewor-riedabouttheimpacttheeliminatedeventswouldhaveonyoungNorthernathletes.Theywereallverysup-portive.Oncetheyrealizedtheseeventscouldntbeaf-liatedwiththeArcticWin-terGamestheyweregladwerelookingtoprovideanalternateeventbecausetheywereafraidwedloseawholecycleofathleteswhohavebeentrainingforthegameshesaid.Providingamulti-sportcompetitionforyoungathletesacrossthecircumpolarNorthiskeytothecontinuedgrowthanddevelopmentofoursportcommunityYukonCommunityServicesMin-isterElaineTaylorsaidinarelease.Hostinganeventsuchasthiswill...ensurecontinuedmomentuminthedevelopmentofsportacrosstheNorthinkeep-ingwiththevisionoftheArcticWinterGamestradition.AlaskasLieutenantOptionsexploredformissingArcticWinterGamessportsSeparatemulti-sportcompetitionintheworksministersaysSportsRecreationwArcticWinterGamesWereexcitedforourathletesandthattheywillstillbeabletocompete...Itsourgoaltoseethisthroughtotheendandmakesureithappens.RobertMcLeodMinisterofMunicipalandCommunityAffairsGovernorMeadTreadwellagreedwithTayloraddinginthereleaseIntheArcticweoftenfacealackofin-frastructureandwemustovercomethoseobstaclestogether.Thegamesarenostrangertoeliminatingevents.Therewasnoal-pineskiinginYellowknifein2008becausethereisnoskihillandin2002whenthegameswereheldinGreenlandsomeeventsrequiringanarenawereco-hostedwithNunavutandathleteswereflownbackandforth.Iqaluitisnotanoptionfor2016however.TheydontthinktheyhavethecapacitytotakeontheextrasportsrightnowMcLeodsaid.Theyredealingwithsomehugein-frastructureprojectsnonerelatedtotheArcticWin-terGamessothatsquiteunderstandable.Thecommitteewillreportbackwithrecommendedlo-cationsandhowmuchthisextrasportcompetitionwillcostbyOctober2013.
