ourgedciti-zensinFortSmithandbe-yondtoputpressureongov-ernmentstofollowthroughwithcommitmentsagreedtointheMackenzieRiverBasinTransboundaryWatersMasterAgreementaimedatprotect-ingthewatershed-commit-mentssharedbythefederalgovernmentNWTAlbertaBCandSaskatchewan.WhiletheproposedchangestotheNavigableWatersPro-tectionActhaveyettobepro-claimedmeaningtheSlavetechnicallystillhasprotectionDuncanwarnedagainstwhatwilloccurwhentheamend-mentsaremadeofcial.Thewaythelawisrightnoweverythingisnavigablewaterwithinreasonifitsacertainsizeandsoforth.WhattheyvedoneischangedinlawonlythoselakesandriversthattheylistasnavigablewaterswillbeconsideredunderthelegislationandtheSlaveRiverisnotincludedinthatsched-ule.WhatsbizarreaboutthatisthatintheMackenzieBasintheAthabascaisprotectedtheMackenziebutnottheSlavewhichisabsurdbecauseyoucantgettotheMackenzieifyoudontgothroughtheSlaveshesaid.MeetingattendeesagreedtocometogetherforaplanningsessionlaterthisfalltoworkonanapplicationforheritagestatusfortheSlaveRiver.ThemeetingtentativelysetfortheendofOctoberisbeingcoordi-natedbySmithsLandingFirstNationelderFrancoisPaulettealongwithBevington.EnvironmentWater
