10TuesdayAugust132013SportsRecreationFestivalsByRENEFRANCOEURAfatsucculentpigglis-teningingreaseroastingonaturningstakewasoneofthemanyhighlightsthisweek-endatthe15thannualGate-wayJamboreeinEnterprise.ThefestivalpresenteditsfirstpigroastdinnerthisyearcourtesyofFortSmithsSholtoDouglasowneroftheGrubBoxandCampreGrill.WeveneverhadoneandeverytimeSholtowouldtellmeaboutitmymouthwouldwatersaidWinnieCadieuxvicepresidentoftheGatewayJamboreeSociety.Partofthepigroastalsoin-cludedthemuch-anticipatedrafingoffoftheanimalsheadwhichcanbeusedforheadcheese.WetrytoaddalittlesomethingextraeveryyearbutwewanttokeepitadayofrelaxationwherepeoplecansitbackenjoygoodmusicandvisitwithfriendsCadieuxsaid.Thejamboreeusher-inginthefinaldogdaysofsummerintheNWTboastedanassortmentoffamily-friendlyeventsincludingthebunnocktournamentthatalwaysgleansspectatorscurios-ityCadieuxsaid.ItsaRussiangamethatwasintroducedmaybe10yearsagobyoneofourresidentsherewhoplayeditasayounggirlinSas-katchewanandforthelastfiveyearswevebeenplay-ingitatthejamboreeCadieuxsaid.TraditionallyitsplayedwithhorsesanklebonesbutplasticpropsareusedinEnterprise.Fourpeoplemakeupateamandhavetotrytogettheotherteamsbonesknockeddown-alittlelikebowlingCadieuxsaid.Itslotsoffunanditmaysoundeasybuttherearerulesandpenaltiesshesaid.GatewayJamboreehostsfirstpigroastAnnualfestivaldrawscrowdforliveentertainmentandgamesActivitiesinthepopularkidstentwereexpandedthisyear.Childrencouldtakepartinabarefootjumpfestinthebouncyhousehuntburiedtreasureinsandpitshavetheirfacespaintedandgetcreativeatvariouscraftstations.Anextensivelistofover20entertainersalsoheadedtheJamboreeincludingworldrenownedEdmontonbluesartistMarshallLaw-rencewhoperformedwithformerNorthernerJamesBoraski.Wecouldntbehappier.WehadawonderfularrayofNorthernentertainers-98percentofthemareNorth-erners.Wehadcountryd-dlingbluesfolkoldrockandrollCadieuxsaid.Peoplecamefromallovertoattendthejamboreein-cludingYellowknifeFortSimpsonFortResolutionFortSmithHayRiverandHighLevel.LonCroucherfromHayRiverpitchestheredbonedur-ingagameofbunnock.WayneSimbaperformswiththeBrothersinLawBandfromKakisa.KathyMousefromEnterprisemakesadreamcatcherinthecraftstent.JamboreemasterofceremonyPatBurkeleftcatchesupwithNorthCountryRocksGeraldPoitras.GeorgePerronandhiswifeRitafromParadiseGardensenjoythemusiconSaturdayafternoon.JenniferColemanperformswithherfatherPat.Agroupfocusesontheirbingocardstowinarangeofprizes.LindaDufordstrikesupafoot-stompingddletune.PhotosPaulBannister
