ArtsCultureSculpture23TuesdaySeptember242013ByJACKDANYLCHUKWhenitcomestoidentify-ingthecreatorsofInuitarttheeyeshaveit.DuncanMcLeanpassedthattiptoLarryAdamsononeoftheInuitartcollectorswhostoppedbytheGalleryoftheMidnightSunearlierthismonthtoshowhistreasurestothepresidentofWadding-tonsaTorontoauctionhouse.McLeanmadehisrsttriptoYellowknifein25yearsonSept.14-15tomeetpeoplewhomightwanttoconsignInuitarttoWaddingtonsespeciallypiecesfromthe50s60sand70smadebycarverswhohavesincepassedon.Theyonlyhadonewayofdoingtheeyessotheywerethesamewhetheritwasamusk-oxahunterorawomanhetoldAdam-sonastheyexaminedanunsignedpieceofsoftgreystonethatdepictsawomaninalongcoat.TheideaistomatchtheeyesonanunsourcedcarvingwithonethatissignedusingSculptureoftheEskimoareferencebookwrittenbyGeorgeSwintonorbysend-ingphotostotheheadcura-torattheWinnipegMuseumMcLeanadvised.Chancesarewhenanart-istisgoodenoughtocarveapiecethisaccomplishedhehasproducedotherworkthatissignedanddocumentedhetoldAdamson.McLeansawnumerouscarvingsandprintsoverthetwodaysbutonethatstoodoutwasasimplepieceofawomaninanamauticarvedbyKaviqaRankinInletartistwhohassincepassedon.HetoldtheownerJimUmpher-sonthatitwouldlikelybring4000to6000atauction.Umphersonboughtthecarvingandotherswhenheworkedforthethen-de-partmentofIndianAffairsandtraveledamongcom-munitiesonthewestcoastofHudsonsBay.Hedidntactivelycollecthesaidbutboughtpieceswhentheart-istsbroughtthemtohimandofferedthemforsale.InuitarthaditsgenesisunderJamesHoustonaTorontoartistwhomovedNorthin1949andprovidedthecatalystforcarvingsandprintsthatweremarketedinsouthernCanadaandexhib-itedinternationally.ThegeniuswasalreadythereMcLeansaid.Hous-toncreatedthesituationtoletitout.Stylesmaterialsandmeth-odshavechangedbuttheactualsubjectsaremuchthesameArcticenvironmentandInuitculturehesaid.InterestinInuitarthasbroadenedsinceWadding-tonsbegansellingitin1978McLeansaid.Thegallerynowhasaninternationalmailinglistwiththenamesof4000collectorsinCan-adatheUnitedStatesBrit-ainFranceandArgentina.Thepricefortherightitemshasgoneuptremen-douslyitismuchmoreac-ceptablenowasamainstreamartformhesaid.Alotofpiecesthatwereboughtfornomorethanadollarortwohavesoldforthousands.MostoftheartWadding-tonsauctionswascreatedbetween1950and1980.ThetrovesareinthehomesorestatesofpeoplewhocameNorthtoworkandretiredtothesouth-RCMPofcersschoolteachersandgovern-mentofcialsMcLeansaid.Manyofthepeoplewhostoppedbythegalleryovertheweekendwerentlook-ingtoselltheircarvingsMcLeansaid.Theywerelookingforin-formationaboutthemandtheyhadsomeinterestingstoriestotell.Alotofitwasmeetingpeopleandmakingcontacts.DuncanMcLeanofWaddingstonsAuctionHouseandYellowknifeartcollectorJimUmphersondiscussacarvingmadebyKavikaRankinInletcarver.BuyersanddealersshowtellandaskforInuitartPhotoJackDanylchukEnvironmentandNaturalResourcesinvitesresidentsintheSouthSlaveRegiontoattendthe3rdBiannualRegionalWildlifeWorkshoptodiscussprioritiesforwildlifeprogramsandresearch.Thisisanopenforumtoshareinformationdiscussregionalwildlifeissuesandtolearnmoreaboutcurrentandon-goingwildliferesearchandmonitoringprogramsintheSouthSlaveRegion.SouthSlaveRegionalWildlifeWorkshopEnvironmentandNaturalResourcesFormoreinformationcontacttheSouthSlaveENRManagerWildlifeResearchandMonitoringat872-6408.Everyoneiswelcometoattend.TheWorkshopisbeingheldintheRoaringRapidsHallinFortSmithonOctober29900a.m.-500p.m.October31900a.m.-1200p.m.October30900a.m.-500p.m.Thepricefortherightitemshasgoneuptremendouslyitismuchmoreacceptablenowasamainstreamartform.Alotofpiecesthatwereboughtfornomorethanadollarortwohavesoldforthousands.DuncanMcLeanWaddingtonsAuctionHouse
