SportsRecreationHandGames22TuesdayOctober82013SPORTSBRIEFSNewGetActivecategoriesannouncedThe20132014GetActiveprogramgrantsarenowopentofundingcommunityandelderspecicevents.OpentoallcommunityorganizationsintheNWTtheGetActivegrantsareaninitiativeoftheNWTRecreationandParksAssociationinpartnershipwiththeGNWTsdepartmentofMunicipalandCommunityAffairsandFirstAirtoen-couragecommunitiestogetinvolvedinhealthyphysicalactivities.Communityeventsandelderspeciceventsareeligiblefor750and1000respectively.OlympiansappealforsupportonlineBrendanGreenaOlympicbiathletebornandraisedinHayRiveralongwithgirlfriendandfellowOlympicbi-athleteRosannaCrawfordhavesettheirsightsonSochi2014andarelookingfornancialsupportthroughanonlinefundraisingcampaign.In2010GreenbecametherstOlympiantorepresenttheNWTin26yearsbutaspinalinjuryin2012sloweddownhisprogress.NowbackonhisfeetbothOlympiansareinfullprep-arationmodeandappealingtofansonlinefornancialassistance.Fortheircampaignwebsitevisitpursu.itcampaignrosanna-crawford-and-brendan-greenCoachingsymposiuminlateOctoberThe2013NWTCoachingSymposiumwilltakeplaceovertheweekendofOct.26-27.ThesymposiumisheldbySportNorthtosupportanddevelopamateursportlead-ersintheNWT.SpeakerswillincludesportbiomechanistCarolynTaylorformercompetitiveswimmerandcross-countryskicoachCayleyThomasaswellasLindsayWrightMeganMcKinlayAinsleyBrouillardandOzzieSawicki.Eventswillincludeworkshopsonsporttech-nologytraditionalgamesAboriginallong-termathletedevelopmentthementalgameofsportrecruitingandretainingvolunteersandofcialstraining.Registrationforaccesstoallworkshopsandkeynotepresentationsis150beforeOct.24.ByMARIACHURCHKeepingyouthoutofmis-chiefmayhavebeenthemaingoaloforganizersatthebacktoschoolyouthhandgamestournamentinBehchokotwoweeksagoBehchokohandgamestournamentkeepsstudentsbusyandentertainedbuthavingfunwasthemostobvioussuccess.ThekidswereallhappySherriZoetournamentcre-atorandmainorganizertoldTheJournal.Wehadfunwatchingthem.Atotalof10teamseachwitheightplayersaged18andunderregisteredforthegameswhichwereheldattheculturalcentreinBe-hchokoSept.28-29.EightteamswerefromBehchokowithonefromWekweetiandonefromGameti.ThewholeeventwasasuccessZoesaidabouttheweekendcompetition.Oneteamvyingforrstplacewascomprisedofplayersnoolderthan10withsomeasyoungassixZoesaid.Watchingtheenthusi-asmfromyoungerplayersastheybattledagainstolderandmoreexperiencedteamswasenjoyableforeveryoneinthecrowd.Theycameinthirdplaceandtheywereallhappy.Ithinktheywantedtogofur-therbuttheywereprettywellhappywithwhattheygotshesaidwithalaugh.FirstplaceinthetournamentwenttoClarenceMackenziesteamsecondplacetoJacobRabescasteamandthirdtoJeromeChocolatesteamallofBehchoko.Handgamesareatradi-tionalformofsocialgam-blingformeninpredomi-nantlyDenecultures.ZoesaidsheandfelloworganizerNancyRabescasawaneedtoengagetheyouthinthetradition.Welookedaroundandsaidwhilethemenarealldoingthistheresnothingfortheyouthtodointhecommunitysheexplained.Westartedoffsayingweregoingtodoayouthhandgamesjusttogettheyouthoutofmischief.ThisisnowthesixthyearBehchokohashostedayouthtournamentbutonlythesec-ondyearithasbeenorga-nizedforthefallinconjunc-tionwithstudentsreturningtoschool.Whilemoneyistradition-allywonathandgamestour-namentsforadultsZoesaidsheandtheotherorganiz-ersconsultedwitheldersinthecommunityanddecidedagainsthandingoutcash.Insteadprizesweregivenouttoeachoftheeightplay-ersfromteamsplacinginthetopsix.Thisyearrstplacewinnersreceiveda64-GBiPadminisecondplaceanAsuslaptopthirda32-GBiPadminifourtha32-GBiPodfthaGalaxytabletandsixtha100Walmartgiftcard.NogirlsallowedDespiteitbeingnearlysevenyearslaterZoewasquicktorememberthattheoriginalideaoftheyouthhandgamestournamentwastoincludeyounggirls.Howevershealongwiththeotherorganiz-erswereforcedtoturnawaytwoteamsofgirlsbecausethecommunityselderswerermlyopposedtotheidea.Theelderskindofgotmadatusandtoldushandgamesarenotforwomensosomeofthoseyoungteenagergirlswerekindofupset.Theywereallexcitedtheywantedtoplayhandgamesbutwehadtoturnthemawayshesaid.Zoesaidshewouldsomedayliketoseeyounggirlspartici-pateinhandgamesparticu-larlysincetheyouthtourna-mentsdonotinvolvemoneybutitisoffthetablewhileeldersinthecommunityre-mainagainsttheidea.WethoughtitwouldntbeabigdealbutIguessitisandwemightaswellrespecttheeldersthatareinthecommu-nitysheconcluded.WithhandgamesoutofthequestionZoesaidshehopestohaveadiscussionwithyounggirlsinthecom-munityinordertolookator-ganizingatraditionalactiv-itytheycanparticipatein.Werestilltryingtog-ureoutwhattodowiththegirlsinthecommunity.Itshardtodecidebecausethereisnothingtraditionalwecandowiththemotherthansew-ing.Maybewellgetsomeoftheyounggirlstalkingseewhattheywanttodoandgofromthereshesaid.Welookedaroundandsaidwhilethemenarealldoingthistheresnothingfortheyouthtodointhecommunity.SherriZoeTlichoGovernmentPhotoTlichoGovernmentYouthasyoungas6yearsoldvieforthetopspotsintheBehchokobacktoschoolhandgamestournament.PLANASAFEESCAPEBLOCKEDEXITScanbecomeEVERYROOMFURNITUREDOORSANDWINDOWSPLASTICINSULATIONNorthwesternAirLeasewouldliketothanktheFortSmithVolunteerFireDepartmentfortheirc
