ArtsCultureFilm89TuesdayOctober292013DogribstorycomestolifeinMohawkfilmMohawkMidnightRunnerstomakeNWTpremiereinFortSmithByMEAGANWOHLBERGInalmasfulloffull-fron-talnudityasMohawkMidnightRunnersitisatestamenttolmmakerZoeHopkinsskillthatthepowerfullife-afrm-ingmessageoffriendshipinthewakeofsuicidetriumphsoverthehilarityofitsstreak-ingactors.BasedontheshortstorybyFortSmithsRichardVanCampDogribMidnightRun-nersHopkinsshortlmtellsthetaleofthreefriendswhobandtogethertogorunningnakedinthenightthroughthestreetsoftheirtowninhonourofafriendwhotookhisownlife.ThatforsurewasoneofmyfavouritestoriesofRich-ardsHopkinstoldTheJour-nal.HegaveittomehecalledmeuponedayandsaidZoeIwantyoutomakethislm.SoIwasblownawaybytheopportunity.Ofallthestoriesitsdenitelyoneofthemostcinematicforsure.The20-minutelmmadeitsCanadiandebutattheImagi-NativelmfestivalonOct.20whereitwontheawardforbestCanadianshortandwillshowattheAmericanIndianFilmFestivalinSanFranciscoonNov.2whereitisalsonomi-natedforbestshortlm.ThestorythoughoriginallysetinFortSmithplaysoutonscreenintheMohawkcommu-nityofSixNationsHopkinshometown.WhiletheoriginalintentwastohavethelmshotinFortSmithissuessecuringfundingonceagainpushedproductionintoOntarioasitdidwithVanCampsnovel-turned-featurelmTheLesserBlessedwhereitreceivedprovincialfundingandtaxincentives.IwasabitdisappointedthatwecouldntstaytruetotheNorthernsettingbut...Igottomakeitathomesoitwasnicetomakeithere.TherewerejustafewthingsIneededtoadapttomakeitworkinSixNationsHopkinssaidlikechangingthenameandaddinginabitofMohawkdialogue.Thoughtherewereafewnakedsightingsbylocalsduringthelmingshesaidtheactorswerebraveandgenerousanddidntreallymindgoingfullfrontalforalotofshots.ThereweredenitelybumseverywhereHopkinssaidwithalaugh.DespiteadifferentbackdropVanCampsaidthelmstaysabsolutelytruetotheheartofthestoryindealingwithasen-sitiveissuethattouchescom-munitieseverywhere.BothTheLesserBlessedandDogribMidnightRunnerswereinspiredbythelossofafamilymemberandafriendthroughsuicideVanCamptoldTheJournal.Ipraythatthesestoriesinalltheirformshelptobringlightandhopetotheterribledarknessthatcomeswiththoughtsofsuicide.Thestorystarsthreerecur-ringcharactersinVanCampsongoingshortstoryseriesandhesaidhesalreadyincon-versationwithHopkinsaboutshootingmorelmswiththesameactorsplayingBrutusClarenceandGrant.VanCampmakesacoupleofindirectcameosinthelmaswellshowingupasabookandonFacebookinthemovie.FacebookwassomethingthatIdidinmyadaptationtosortofhelpdepictsomeofthebackstorythatthischaracterhadtakenhislifeHopkinssaid.IwantedtodosomethingthatwouldalsospeaktohowisolatedthemaincharacterhadbecomethathejustsitsinsideandhangsaroundonFacebookandplaysvideogamesandgetshighanddrinksandthatshislife-thatdepressionandthatgriefthathesgoingthroughallbyhimself.ThoughitcouldntbelmedintheNWTMohawkMidnightRunnerswillmakeitsNorth-ernpremiereinFortSmithatafundraisingeventforlocalhockeyattheRoaringRap-idshall-whichVanCampaf-fectionatelycallsMoccasinSquareGardens-onDec.6.BecauseofthenuditytheFortSmithscreeningwillbeforpeopleaged19andup.Whilethesubjectmatterislikelytobeemotionallytrigger-ingforsomepeopleVanCampsaidtheeventisintendedtobeacommunity-buildingcelebra-tionoflifeandamomenttohonourthosewhohavebeenlosttosuicide.AllcommunitiesarebeingrockedbysuicideanditsnotgettingbetterVanCampsaid.IcontinuetobesaddenedbythenumberofsuicidesincommunitiesthatImhearingabout.SoIhopethiscreatessomediscussionaroundthosewarningsignsandhonoursthelivestaken.LesserBlessedreturnsTheLesserBlessedlmwillalsomakeareturnappearancetoFortSmiththesameweek-endwithato-be-announcedpresentationofaspecialgifttothecommunityasafund-raiserforthegraduatingclassofPWKhighschool.ThroughworkingonbothlmsVanCampsaidhehopestobreaktrailforafuturelineofNorthernlmmakersandactorsandwantstoseemorehomegrownmoviesandpro-gramscomingfromtheNorth.Imsoproudtobepartofahugeteamofwonderfulvision-arieswhowanttobringinter-nationalattentiontothebeautyoftheNorthandNorthernershesaid.Ourstoriesdeserveinternationalaudiences.DirectorZoeHopkinsposeswiththethreestreakingactorsofMohawkMidnightRun-nersfromleftJonProudstarCodyLightningandDougHutchison.PhotoBigSoulProductionsDocumentaryexposeshoByMARIACHURCHAnewdocumentaryseekingtoshedlightonhomelessnessinInuvikhasreceivedmoreat-tentionthanproducerMichaelYoungsaysheeverhoped.AsofMondaythedocu-mentaryAColdPlacetoLiveOutsideHomelessnessintheCanadianArctichadbeenviewed4288timesonYouTube.Iwasthinkingwhenweproduceditthatitwouldmaybebeabout300Youngsaidwithalaugh.Imcompletelyblownawaybytheamountofatten-tionthatitsgot.Thedocumentarywasre-leasedinAugustaspartofaresearchprojectledbyYounganassociateprofessoratRoyalRoadsUniversityonVancou-verIsland.Fundedbythefederaldepart-mentofHumanResourcesSer-vicesDevelopmentHRSDCtheresearchprojectbeganin2011withthegoalofbetterunderstandingtheunderlyingproblemsassociatedwithhome-lessorasYoungpreferstocallithard-to-houseindividuals.Imnotusingthetermhomelessmuchanymorebecauseitsnotcomprehen-siveenoughheexplained.Generallypeopleassumehomelessnessistobeabsolutelyhomelessmeaninglivingonthestreetbutma
