EnvironmentMonitoring11TuesdayDecember172013Allofusatthecommunitygovernmentwouldliketowishyouahappyholidayandajoyousnewyear.Wedalsoliketoextendourthankstoallgovernmentagenciesandself-employedpeopleintheNWT.HappyHolidaysFromtheHamletofPaulatukNORTHERNOWNEDANDOPERATREDFIREPREVENTIONSERVICESLTD.1MelvilleDriveP.O.Box2422YellowknifeNTX1A2P8Phone867873-3800TOLLFREEinNWTNunavut1888202-4091www.ykfireprevention.caDESIGNINSTALLVERIFYINSPECTMAINTAINFireAlarmSystemsSprinklerSystemsIndustrialCommercialSpecialHazardsFireSuppressionSystemsPortableFireExtinguishersTrainingFireProtectionProductsServicesALLOFUSatFirePreventionServicesLtd.wouldliketoextendourbestwishesfortheholidayseason.BEHAPPYSTAYSAFE.Protectingyourpeopleandpropertywithfireprotectionsystemsthatareefficienteffectiveandreliable.InuvialuitGwichinlandusersdocumentlandchangesResearchersharesmonitoringtechniquesatAuroraCollegeinFortSmithByMARIACHURCHAresearchprojectfromtheUniversityofVictoriaisusingphotographyandvid-eographytodocumentlanduserknowledgeofenviron-mentalchangewiththeaimofexpandingscienticknowl-edgebeyondthelaboratory.TrevorLantzaprofessorofenvironmentalstudiesattheUniversityofVictoriaistheleadbehindanenviron-mentalmonitoringprojectwhichgathersinterviewsphotosandvideosfromlanduserstodocumentenviron-mentalchangeintheNorth.Theprojecthesaidallowsscientiststomoreefcientlydirecttheirresearchefforts.IfeveryoneintheAk-lavikareaforexampleistalkingaboutonethingthatisbothconcerningtothemasacommunitybutalsosomethingthatisreallyun-usualandquiteabnormalfromanenvironmentalper-spectivethenthatmessagecomesthroughreallyclearlythroughthisprogramLantztoldTheJournal.Asasci-entistithelpsguidewhereweputourlimitedresourcesandeffort.Lantzinformallybeganworkingwithlandusersin2008-2009whenhisresearchonenvironmentalchangeledhimtoconnectwithNorth-erncommunitymembersasguidesandcollaborators.WhenLantzandhisteamrstheardaccountsofthe1999stormsurgethatoodedtheMackenzieDeltaandYukonNorthSlopefromthoseinInuvikandAklavikherealizedtherewasadis-connectbetweenscienticknowledgeandlanduserknowledge.Lotsofpeoplewereonthelandwhenithappened.Somepeoplehadtobeevacuatedpeoplewhohadcampsouttheresawtheef-fectsofitrsthand.Theywatchedthevegetationdiewhentheywereattheircampsthenextspringbutitwaskindofofftheradarofscientistsanddecisionmakershesaid.Attheendofitwereal-izedthatwhathadhappenedherewasareallybigdealandithadlargelyfallenbe-tweenthecracksintermsofbeingdocumentedbeyondthelocalcommunitysknowl-edgeofit.Lantzledhisresearchteamtobeginformalizingamethodbywhichthecom-munitycoulddocumenttheirrsthandknowledgeofenvi-ronmentalchangesandshareitwithscientists.Amonitoringprogramwaslaterdevelopedinpar-ticipationwithgovernmentandorganizationsintheIn-uvialuitandGwichinsettle-mentregionsincludingtheInuvialuitJointSecretariattheGwichinTribalCounciltheMackenzieDeltaCumula-tiveImpactMonitoringPro-gramandAboriginalAffairsandNorthernDevelopmentCanada.Themonitoringprogramhasthusfarcollectedpho-tosandrecordingsfrom52localexpertsatmorethan270locationsoverthepastthreeyears.Peopleoftenfocusontheculturalchangesoftheland-scapeandwhatthosechangesmeanfortheculturalsigni-cancetalkingaboutthingslikeplacenamesfamilytra-ditionsandstoriesabouttheland.Ittakesitinadimensionthatoftenresourcemanage-mentandsciencedoesntre-allygoanditsareallyimpor-tantaspecttothinkaboutLantzsaid.Arecentadditiontotheprogramhaslanduserssign-ingoutcamerastodocumenttheirday-to-dayimpressionsonthechangingenvironment.ResearchtechniquessharedinFortSmithLantzwasinFortSmithlastweektosharehisre-searchtechniquesatAuroraCollegesThebachacampuswithabout70peoplecrowd-inginforhispresentation.SarahRosolenmanageroftheAuroraResearchInstitutewhichorganizedLantzsvisitsaidshehopesresearchintheformofphotoandvideodocumentationbylanduserscatchesoninothercommu-nitieslikeFortSmith.Theresearchcouldbeusedtostudyareasofculturalim-portanceandenvironmentalchangeshesaid.SomeofthebenetsthatLantzwassuggestingisyouaregettingthefullstorywhenyoudothoseinterviewsandwhenyougooutonthelandwithpeople.Yourenotjusttakingtheinformationthatyouwantyouaretakingitallandifyoureallylistentoititcaninformwhereyougoshesaid.Thesepeopleareonthelandandtheyareexpertsontheenvironment.Theyhavealotofknowledgethereandifyoulistentoityourre-searchasaWesternscien-tistcanbesomuchmoreinformed.RosolensaidshehopestocontinueworkingwithLantztowardscultivatingland-userresearchinthecommunityparticularlyintheschoolsystembutitulti-matelydependsontheleveloflocalinterest.PhotoJessicaDuttonTrevorLantzexplainshisresearchtechniquestoacrowdedroomofstudentsandcom-munitymembersatAuroraCollegesThebachacampuslastweek.
