23TuesdayMarch42014BRIEFSSPORTSNWTPotentialVolleyballClubdominatesagainstGrandePrairieTheNWTPotentialVolleyballClubunder-16teamiscelebratingahugewinatatournamentinEdmontonlastweekendthathadthempittedagainstGrandePrairiefortheDivision2consolationnal.Thegirlsdominatedtheircompetitionbywinningthersttwogamesinthebestofthreematch.OvertheweekendofplayattheSavilleCommunitySportsCentrethegirlsledbyheadcoachRonChiassonplayedeightgameswherefourwinsandfourlossesbroughtthemtheDivision2titleandplacedthemeighthinDivision1.TheNWTPotentialVolleyballClubwascreatedin2009foryounggirlsintheterritoryagedfourto18toexposethemtohighlevelvolleyballtrainingandcompetition.NWTspeedskatersrecordpersonalbestsinCalgaryFourspeedskatersfromtheNWTarecelebratingper-sonalbesttimesafteracompetitioninCalgarytwoweeksago.LaurenEggenbergerandAustinMillerjoinedteam-matesHannahClarkandSimonAustinbothlivingandtraininginCalgarytorepresenttheNWTfortheCalgarycompetition.AllfourathletesbrokepersonalbesttimeswithEggenbergerbreakingherrecordonthe1500-metretrackbyeightsecondswhichwasalowenoughtimetoputherintherunningforCanadianNationalAgeClassChampionshipstobeheldMar.14to16inPrinceGeorgeBC.NWTcoachShaneClarksaidhewasverypleasedwiththeteamsprogressaddingthatitwasagreatweek-endforallNWTspeedskaters.BothClarkandAustinwillbecompetingintheNationalTeamSelectionsforthersttimethisyear.Yellowknifetohost2014TraditionalGamesChampionshipsWilliamMacdonaldSchoolinYellowknifeissettohostthe2014TraditionalGamesChampionshipsthisyearbeingheldMar.6to9.RunbytheAboriginalSportsCircleoftheNWTtheannualchampionshipgamesaimtoincreaseparticipationandawarenessofInuitandDenegamesintheterritory.ThechampionshipsInuitgameswillincludetheonefoothighkicktwofoothighkickwristhangandlegwrestlingandDenegameswillincludethestickraisesnowsnakepolepushandhandgames.Formoreinfor-mationortoregistergoonlinetohttpwww.ascnwt.caProgramsEventsTraditionalGamesChampionships.aspxSunshinesbrightonchilly2014ThebachaLoppetByDONJAQUEThe85participantsofthisyearsThebachaLoppetwon-deredwhattheyhadgottenthemselvesintowhentheyawokelastSaturdaytofrigidtemperatureswithicefogbutthebrightsunwarmedthingsquicklyfortherobustgroupthatstartedfromdowntownFitzgeraldAlta.ontheiran-nual30-kmskiadventure.CookiesteaandjuicewereonthemenuattherstcheckpointatGooseIsland10kmin.Theskiersandafewsnowshoerswerecare-fullytrackedbytheirnum-bersalongthewayandvet-eranorganizerswereinradiocontacttomonitorevery-onesconditioninthecoldtemperatures.AtHalfwayawarmtentprovidedparticipantswithsoupbannockorangesandagainanamazingarrayofhomemadecookies.ManyparticipantsoptedtostartatHalfwayduetothecoldandskiedthelasttrailgiventheunseasonalcoldspell.TheprojectionswereactuallyforcoldertemperaturesandtheprospectofcancellationorpostponementloomedbutasIwokeupthatmorningwithgreattrepidation.Mythermometershowed-42andtherewasicefog.Theforecastwasgoodbuteventhenat-23itisverycoldsaidorganizerPattiKayHamilton.Iwassoimpressedthatpeoplewerestillkeentogo.Shesaidtheeventwentoffwithoutmishapandshewaspleasedtoreceivesomeverypositivefeedback.SomeoftheskiersinthelargecontingentthatcamedownfromYellowknifetoldhertheyparticularlylovedthewaytheeventwassofriendlyandlikedthehomeypotlucksup-perthatfollowed.Ireceivedlotsofgreatcommentsonhowbeautifultheviewswerealongthetrail.IwasjustreallyexcitedHamiltonsaid.SportsRecreationSkiingSnowshoeingsegmentinthewarmerpartoftheday.Manyyoungerpar-ticipantsstartedatthethirdandnalMountainRapidsstationandskiedinontheregularlygroomedtrailstotheFortSmithNordicCen-treskiclub.Organizershadbeenwatch-ingthetemperatureforecastsallweekwiththeirngerscrossedifagiftfromabovethefore-castsbecamemorefavourablethroughouttheweek.Evenatthat-23Cwascoldandwindwasafactor.Theracestarttimewasdelayedtwiceultimatelystartingatnoonandeventhenpartici-pantswerecounseledonthechallengesofspendingsuchalongtimeinthecold.Iwokeupthatmorningwithgreattrepidation.Mythermometershowed-42andtherewasicefog...Iwassoimpressedthatpeoplewerestillkeentogo.PattiKayHamiltonPhotoPaulBannisterPhotoRickJamesFortSmithsStuartMacMillanwindshiswaythroughthesnowytrailsbetweenFitzgeraldandtheskiclub.AhardcoregroupofskiersandsnowshoersbravetheicytemperaturestotakeontheThebachaLoppetawinterinstitutionenjoyedbythecommunityofFortSmithandanenthusiasticcohortfromYellowknife.
