JuniorCanadianRangersgatherforsummertrainingNorthernyouthlearntraditionleadershiplifeskillsatWhitehorsecampEducationSummerCamp13TuesdayJuly152014ByDALICARMICHAELOver200youthfromtheNorthernTerritoriestrav-eledtoWhitehorseYukontoattendtheJuniorCanadianRangerJCREnhancementTrainingSessionETSfromJune21to28wheretheytookpartinasummercampfullofadventureandlifelessons.Intotalyouthfrom36dif-ferentcommunitiesacrossthreeterritoriesattendedthecampofferedbytheFirstCa-nadianRangerPatrolGroupandhostedattheWhitehorseCadetsSummerTrainingCentre.Ofthoseinatten-dance57JCRsalongwith12CanadianRangerescortshailedfromtheNorthwestTerritories.Theobjectiveofitisre-allytobringkidsfromremotecommunitiesthroughouttheterritoriesandprovidethemchallengingexperiencesthingsthattheywouldntnec-essarilyexperienceintheircommunitysaidCaptainYannickFergussontheof-cer-in-chargeofETS.Itsalsoforthemtolearntopro-motecondenceandlearntodevelopnewskills.BybringingyouthtogetherhesaidtheETSalsocreatesauniquenetworkingopportunityforpotentialNortherncom-munityleadersofthefuture.TraditionalRangerlifestyleskillsJCRsenjoyedanintenseweekofrecreationwiththechancetotrywhitewaterraft-ingzip-liningrockclimb-ingcanoeingrappellingandhorsebackriding.Oneofthefavouritechallengesthoughdifficultwasmonkidoanintenseracecoursedot-tedwith48obstacles.Theyalsolearnedsurvivalskillsbypracticingwaterrescuestrappingforfoodandtryingtheirhandatwoodsmanship.Theyouthdidntjustworktoimprovetheirphysicalabilitiesthroughoutthecamptimewasdedicatedtothreedifferentlearningcirclesfocusingontradi-tionalRangerandlifeskills.ThetraditionalskillsarerelatedtowhotheyareandwheretheycomefromFergussonsaidnotingthattheselessonswerecarriedoutbylocaleldersandFirstNationsofcers.Sincealotoftraditionalskillsareveryparticulartoanareaorevenacommunitywecan-notundertakethatwithmostofusbeingfromthesouthhesaid.RangerskillswereorientedtowardspreservingtheCana-dianRangersmilitaryleg-acyandsharpeningsurvivalskillswhilelessonsinlifeskillsweremoreholisticgivingyouthpathwaysto-wardbecominggoodcitizens.Healthylifestylesproperdietsubstanceavoidanceandabstainingfrombully-ingandharassmentwereallpartofthediscussion.IncreasingyouthleadershipForthesecondyearrun-ningtheETScampaddedastrongleadershipcomponentfortheolderJCRs.Inaddi-tiontoassistingtheCanadianRangersFergussonsaidtheinclusionofyouthleadersinvitedmorecollaborationbetweencampersandtheirsuperiors.SamuelGruben18ofTuk-toyaktukwasoneoftheseniorJCRschosentobeacampleader.Afterattendingalead-ershiptrainingsessionoverthewinterGrubenwasgivenoneofhisownpatrolstocommand.IhadalotoffunandIencouragekidstogotothecampandhavetheopportu-nitytoexperiencestuffthattheyhaventdonebeforeGrubensaid.AfterbeingaJCRforthepastfouryearsandattendingETScampsforthelastthreeheplansonapplyingtobecomeafull-edgedCanadianRanger.PhotoscourtesyofCpt.StephenWattonGraceIllasiakofAklavikpracticesherrappellingskills.KianaWedawinandShakiraWetradeofWhatimeetwithRear-AdmiralJenniferBennettChiefofReservesCadetsandNationalChampionforWomeninDefenceduringtheclosingceremonyoftheJCREnhancedTrainingSession.KeashaGreenofPaulatuktrudgesthroughMonkidoamilitary-styleobstaclecoursewith48challenges.
