inEdmonton.EveryFirstNationhastherighttosayhowtheywanttobeconsulted.ThenewconsultationpolicyattemptstostandardizehowindustrymustconsultwithAboriginalgovernmentsaboutindustrialde-velopmentontheirlandsbuthasbeenheavilyPOLITICSFIRSTNATIONScriticizedbyAboriginalgroupsintheprov-incewhosayitoverridestheirownconsul-tationpoliciesandgivestoomuchpowertotheprovince.Thelegislationestablishesasinglegovern-mentofceresponsibleforsettingstandardsforwhenandhowmuchconsultationisre-quiredforprojectsanddecidingwhenithassuccessfullybeencompleted.AswellthelegislationproposesindustrybeleviedtohelppayforFirstNationspar-ticipationintheconsultationprocess.TheTreaty8chiefscollectivelyrejectedthepolicyforthersttimelastfallafterndingthatnoneoftherecommendationstheymadeina2010positionpaperwereincludedinthedraftlegislation.Thelegislationhasbeenpassedbuthasyettobeenacted.Thechiefsaredemandingthegovern-mentrescindthelegislationorfacelegalaction.EldonMcIlwainpresssecretaryforOberlesaidtheministerwasdisappointedwiththedecisionbytheTreaty8chiefsandsaidtheywouldnotberescindingtheact.IwouldliketopointoutthatindustryandgovernmenthadagreedwithFirstNationsthattheyrequiredmorefundingtoensuretheycanplayameaningfulroleinthecon-sultationprocessandthattheproposedlevyonindustryismeanttosupplythatfundinghetoldTheJournalinanemail.Through-outthisprocessourfocushasalsobeenonrespectingTreatyRights.NearlytwodozenFirstNationsmakeupTreaty8whichstretchesacrossthenorthernhalfofAlbertaandintoB.C.andtheNorth-westTerritories.WeretiredoftheAlbertagovernmentunderminingusasFirstNations.EveryFirstNationhastherighttosayhowtheywanttobeconsulted.ChiefSteveCourtoreilleMikisewCreeFirstNation
