TuesdaySeptember16201413ByDALICARMICHAELAfterdecidingtotakeahiatusfromitsannualsummershindigtheOpenSkyCre-ativeSocietyinFortSimpsonwelcomedau-tumnwithaharvestfestivallastweekend.Fromworkshopstodisplaystodancesaurryofartsandgardeningactivitiescar-riedonatthelocalrecreationcentrefromSept.13to14.Thisyearwasalittlebitofatransi-tionyearforOpenSkysaidthesocietysexecutivedirectorAnyesDimsdaleex-plainingthetransitionfromasummertoafallfestival.Werereassesingourprogramming.Thingswerealittleinuxwiththeorganiza-tionsowedidntfeelcomfortableputtingonourusualfestivalinJuly.WethoughtwellmaybethisyearwecouldpartnerupwiththegardensocietythatdidtheirrstfallfairlastyearDimsdalesaid.Nextyearwellgobacktoourregularspotbutthisyearwethoughtwewouldjustdosomethingsowehadoneofoureventshappeningbutalittlebitdifferent.OpenSkypartneredupwiththeFortSimp-sonGardenSocietyfortheevent.TheaimofthegardensocietyistoshowcasesomeofthegreatsuccessstoriesofgardenersintheDehchoregionDims-dalesaid.Communityrepresentativeswillbebringinginsomeoftheirproducebas-ketstheyllhavedisplaytablesshowcas-ingthingsfrompeoplesgardens.Thefestivitieskickedoffwithkidsac-tivitiesincludingashowwithfiddlersMirandaCurrieandapuppetworkshopwithBenNindandNatalieLabossiere.Whilethechildrenkeptbusytheirpar-entsperusedthroughtheDehchocom-munitygardenanddisplaysandfoodandcraftvendorsavailablethroughoutthetwodays.AtnoontheOpenSkystagebegantollwithfolkandcountryartistslikeKININorthPatColemanMarkLyonandddlersCalvinCairnsandBonnieGregory.Ontheartssideoftheeventworkshopsincludedtraditionalcanvasbushbagdecorat-ingsilkscarfpaintingwatercolourpaintingmoosehairtuftingbeadedearringmakingandpuppeteering.Atthesametimethosewithmoreofagreenthumbthanarhythmlearnedaboutgrowingindoorsandsavingspacewithmicrogreensdehydratingfoodsandusingpermaculture.Afterthefulldayattendeeslearnedhowtomakespringrollsusingsomeoftheirfreshingredients.Intheeveningtheadultsputontheirdancingshoesforthenightofdancingwithacountryddleandguitarjamboreefol-lowedbyDJRonnieAntoine.OnSundaythefuncontinuedwithmuralpaintingwithDianeBoudreauandmoreartsworkshops.TheNWTsdepartmentofIndus-tryTourismandInvestmenthostedseveralinfosessionsthatfellundertheumbrellaoftheirGrowingForwardsmall-scaleharvest-inginitiativefocusingonfoodpreservationcompostingmushroomharvestingandpre-paringandwildplantharvesting.ItsthestartofthenewschoolyearitsfalltimeandIthinkthecommunityisdueforacelebrationDimsdalesaid.Ev-eryoneworkedhardontheirgardensitsnicetoshowcasethatforpeoplewhoareinterestedingardeningbutmaybearenttoosure.YoucandoamazingthingsinNortherngardensanditsalwaysfuntoshowcaseourlocalmusiciansourartistsandartisans.Wevegotsomegreattalentintheregion.OpenSkycelebratesfallharvestinlieuofsummerfesti-valARTSCULTUREFALLFAIRJackieZingeramemberoftheOpenSkyexecutiveboardandvolunteercoordinatorforthefestivalwelcomesvisitorstotheharvestfestivalwithopenarms.PhotosChuckBlythMichelleLegeranOpenSkyboardmembertriesherhandatpaintingwithwatercolours.LorayneMosesparticipatesinasilkscarfpaintingworkshop.DianeBoudreaufromYellowknifehostsapaintingworkshopforkids.
