TuesdayOctober2120149SPORTSRECREATIONVOLLEYBALLFortSmithhosts500volleyballstudentathletesforannualterritorialtournamentByDALICARMICHAELDespitesomeearlysetbackstheseventhannualLawrieHobartvolleyballtournamentinFortSmithwentoffwithoutahitchthisweekendwithcloseto500studentspartici-patingfromacrosstheterritory.ThetournamentwasalmostcancelledwhenthewaterwasturnedoffathostschoolJo-sephTylerBurrellelementaryonwhatwassupposedtobetherstdayofplayanun-fortunatecircumstancecausedbyongoingwatermainrepairsatthecornerofConibearCr.andMcDougalRd.Withsomerejiggingincludingschedul-inggamesasearlyas645a.m.andaslateas1145p.m.thegamesweresavedandtheeageryoungathleteswereabletoplay.TheboysandgirlsagedivisionsrangedfromGrade67Grade8U15andU19.Eachroundsawtheteamscompeteforthebestofvegamesets.InadditiontotheJBTcourtstudentsplayedatPaulWilliamKaeserPWKhighschoolandthereccentrealllocatedwithinablockofoneanother.WithhomecourtadvantageFortSmithsPWKdidexceptionallywelltakingveofthetopspotsincludingthreegoldmedals.BothYellowknifehighschoolsEcoleSirJohnFranklinandEcoleSt.Patrickalsomadestrongperformancespersistingtotakehomethreeandtwotopplacemedalsrespectively.IntheyoungerdivisionsDiamondJennessSecondarySchoolofHayRiverdominatedtheGrade8racketwiththeirtwoteamstakingonegoldtwosilversandabronze.IthinkitsbeenagoodweekendthekidshavehadfunsaidPWKsprincipalAlKar-asiuk.Everytournamenttheresgoingtobeglitches.Youvegot450500people-nothingeverrunssmoothbutyoujustgowiththeow.Whilethefast-pacedcompetitionwasthehighlightoftheweekendthekidsalsogottoenjoytheirtimeoffthecourtplayinggamesatthereccentreswimmingatthepoolandmin-glingatadanceheldforalltheparticipants.VisitingstudentscampedoutatPWKlay-ingoutsleepingbagsandpadsintheclass-roomsinlieuoftheusualcrowdeddesks.AccordingtoFortSmithsChamberofCom-mercepresidentJanieHobartwhovolunteersannuallyatthetournamentdedicatedtoherlatehusbandtheeventbringsin60000to100000ofsportstourismrevenuetothecommunityeachyear.Thebusinessessupporttherecreationalteamssomuchshesaid.Wereallyappre-ciatetheopportunitytogiveback.WhilethismarkstheseventhyearoftheLawrieHobarttournamentthecommunityhashostedaninvitationalvolleyballtourna-mentforupwardsof25years.ThetournamentsnamesakeLawrieHo-bartwasalong-servingeducatorinFortSmithwhowasasdedicatedtohisstudentsrecreationalopportunitiesaswehastotheiracademicsKarasiuksaid.ManyoftheteamswillmeetupagainthisweekendattheseniorandjuniorSpikeItvol-leyballtournamenttobeheldinYellowknife.PhotosDaliCarmichaelPaulBannisterEmilyHammfromSt.PatsslamsdownaspikeintheU19girlsnalgame.FortSmithshometownheroesfromPaulWilliamKaeserHighSchooltookthegoldmedalfortheU19boysdivisionbeatingoutEcoleSirJohnFranklinHighSchoolinfourgames.Therallieswerehardfoughtbetweentheevenlymatchedteams.ArhiEkendafromBehchokosChiefJimmyBruneauRegionalHighSchoolacceptshisgoldmedalfortheboysGrade67divisionfromJanieHobartwhoselatehusbandismemorializedannuallywiththeLawrieHobarttourney.TheU19girlsfromEcoleSt.PatrickHighSchoolcelebratetheirgoldmedalgameafterbeatingouttheirhometownrivalsYellowknifesEcoleSirJohnFranklinHighSchool.
