sagoodday.Onthebaddaysyoukindofjusthavetoholdontothosegoodmomentsthatmaychangethetrajectoryofsomebodyslifeforthegood.AftermovingnorthfromNewfoundlandin2006BishopstartedhercareerworkingasachildcareworkerattheTrailCrossTreat-mentCentreamentaltreatmentfacilityforyouthinFortSmith.AtthattimewithaBAalreadyunderherbeltBishopdecidedtopursueheryouthandchildworkerdegree.IfoundworkingwhiledoingmydegreebenettedmemorebecauseIcouldrelateeverythingintheonlineclassroomtotheworkIwasdoingshesaid.IcouldrelatethetheorytopracticeIalreadyhadthehands-onskills.AfterthatBishopcompletedayear-longstintinHighLevelAlta.beforereturningtoSmithin2009asafull-timesocialworkerwithChildandFamilyServicesatthelocalhealthauthor-ity.Nowsheissupervisorofateamoffourso-cialworkersthoughshestilltakesonclients.ItsuniquebeinginasmalltownthatworkswithasmallteaminthatIstillgettodosomeofthefrontlinestuff.Inabig-gercentrepeoplearemorespecializedherewereallgeneralizedworkerssoweworkwithallagesinalldifferentareasshesaid.WorkingforSmithisnotdiffer-entthananysmallNortherncommunity.Weseealotofthesameissues.Herewegettodomedicalsocialworkweworkwithpalliativepatientschildrenadoptionsthedisabledseniors-wekindofhaveourhandsineverylittlebit.AtanypointBishopandherstaffcarryacaseloadofabout10familiesatthesametimetakingonextraadultpatients.Whiletheyrunregularbusinesshoursthestaffarefrequentlyoncallaroundtheclockassistinginemergencyandpoliceservicesastheneedarises.Ontopofthattheyfaceamountainofpaperworkwitheachcase.Wehavetohonourthatassocialwork-ersweareallowedintopeopleslivesatveryvulnerabletimesBishopsaidnotingsheisastoundedbyjusthowresilientherclientscanbe.Wereoftennottherewhengoodstuffishappening.Usuallypeoplesinterac-tionswithsocialworkersarewhentheirlifeisinchaosorcrisis.Thefactthatsometimespeoplewillinglyletusintotheirlivesinthemostvulnerablemomentsistomeamazing.Forthosethinkingofenteringacareerinso-cialworkBishopsaidsheishighlysupportive.Ithinkitsagoodtimetobeasocialworkershesaid.TheresbeenalotofchangeandIseeitacrossthecountrywithhowsocialworkersareworkingonputtingafocusonkeepingmorefamiliestogetherandworkingwithcommunitiestostrengthenthem.SocialworkisaprofessionthatIthinkwillalwaystakeandhasalwaystakenalotofcriticismbutIthinkespeciallyintheNorthrightnowwherewearechangingallofourstandardsitsagoodtimetobeapartofthat.PhotoLeiliHeidemaFortSmithsocialworkerMaryBishophasbeenrecognizedforherdedicationtohercareer.
