14TuesdayMarch192013WESCLEANNORTHERNSALESLTD.isalovelyyoungfemalecat.Sheisalwaysplayfulandhertastefulgreyandwhitecoatisenoughtokeepyouwarmduringthelongwinterseason.Pleaseleaveamessageat872-5543fordetails.ADCSexperimentswithfirst-eversciencefairByMEAGANWOHLBERGTheAthabascaDeltaCom-munitySchoolADCSinFortChipewyanmadesci-entichistorylastweekwithitsrst-everschool-widesci-encefair.StudentsfromGrades1-12showedtheirstuffonWednesdayafternoondem-onstratingeverythingfromzzingchemicalreactionstozappingelectronicchargesforapanelofninejudgessup-pliedbyoilsandscompaniesCenovusandImperialOil.WinnersofthesciencefairineachcategorywillgoontocompeteintheWoodBuffaloRegionalScienceFairrepre-sentingFortChipewyanalsoforthersttime.Theeventwhichwastwoyearsinthemakingreceived15000insupportfrombothCenovusandImperialOiltogetofftheground.ADCSscienceteacherCoreyConroysaidlarge-scaleeventslikethesciencefairareachallengefortheschoolbecauseofthecom-munitysisolationwhichmakessuppliesexpensiveandhardtocomeby.Iwouldattributeittostaffturnoverusuallybutalsolackofequipment-beinginay-incommunityitshardtosupportproject-basedsciencebecauseitgenerallydoestakealotofmaterialsandequip-ment.ButthankfullywereinapositionthankstoCenovusandImperialtheydonatedaverygenerousdonationtoourschoolsowecouldpro-curethatthisyear.Conroytheeventsleadorganizersaidallthehardworkandplanningwasworthittohavestudentstakesuchanactiveinterestinscience.Iamsuchahugeadvocateforproject-basedsciencebecauseitputsthestudentinthedriversseatoftheirlearning.Theytakeinitia-tiveforittheyndthein-formationtheyasktherealandtheyrebeingquiteelo-quentandveryarticulateintheirthoughtstheircom-municationanditsreallyencouraging.Theteamofjudgesearnedhertherunner-upprizeforthefair.FirstplacewastakenbyGrade10studentEvange-lineCardinalwhoseproj-ectlookedintopenicillinallergies.IdecidedtodoitbecauseIhaveanallergytopenicillinandamoxicillinandalsobe-causeIdevelopedtheallergyatayoungeragethanmostpeopledowhichisbetween20and49yearsshesaid.Cardinalnowunderstandswhatsomeoftheriskfac-torsarefordevelopingtheallergysuchasoveruseofthedrugandhowthedrugwasaccidentallydiscoveredbyalazylabtechnician.BeforeIneverknewany-thingotherthanthenameshesaid.Otheryoungerstudentsalsoshowedagreatamountofenthusiasmfortheirproj-ectssuchasagroupofGrade6studentswhomadeaninteractivedisplayonconstellations.Ilovespace.SpaceismyfavouriteexclaimedKayaMercredithespokespersonforthegroup.Therearelotsofbeautifulthingsyoucansee...Scienceisfunandyoucanlearnlotsofthings.FellowGrade6studentIsaacSmorongkeptwiththespacetheme-aunitjustcom-pletedinclass-inhisprojectonplanetsforwhichhemadehisownmodelsolarsystem.Itsjustcool.Theuni-versepeopledontknowwhatsoutthereandthatswhatIlikeaboutithesaid.TheGrade4classfocusedonsimplemachineslikewedgesleversandpulleys.WithoutapulleyitshardtopullupheavystuffKaydenTuccaroexplainedwhileothermembersofhergroup-ShauntayAntoineandChaseGrandjambe-addedtheyneverknewaagpoleorshoelaceswereconsideredpulleysbeforetheirresearch.TheGrade1classfo-cusedonthesugarcontentofdrinks.WelearnedwateristhemosthealthyandicedteahasthemostsugarMackenzieWhiteknifesaid.ShelleyLarosecommunityprogramsofcerwithImpe-rialOilwasonhandtohelpjudgeprojects.Shesaidpro-motingscienceisessentialtothevitalityofhercompany.ItsalsovitaltothebroaderindustriesoutsideofourownandreallyhelpsmakeCanadaacompetitivecoun-tryinaglobalmarketshesaid.Settingupthesekidstopursuedifferentareasanddisciplinesscienceprovidesavarietyofopportunitiesforthem.Itsnotallworkinginalab.Sciencecanbeoutdoorsitcanbeworkingwithwaterinaclassroominahospital.MarthaMcClarycom-munityaffairsanalystforCenovusandafellowjudgesaideventslikesciencefairsgetkidslookingoutsidetheclassroom.Wehopethattheyinspirekidsnotnecessarilyjustwithsciencebutwitharealpassionforlifelonglearningapassiontobecreativeandjustinnova-tiveandpassionateabouttheirfutureoverallshesaid.Itsnicetohavethatdiversityout-sidetheclassroomwithwhataschoolcanoffer.Iamsuchahugeadvocateforproject-basedsciencebecauseitputsthestudentinthedriversseatoftheirlearning.CoreyConroyADCSscienceteacherquestionsoflifeanditre-allygivesthemskillsforinvestigationcriticalthink-ingandproblemsolvingthattheycantakewherevertheygohesaid.Anditgivesthemcon-fidence.WehaveateamofjudgesinfromCalgaryincludedgeophysicistsen-gineersenvironmentalad-visorsandmembersofthestakeholderrelationsteamsofeachoilsandscompany.Theyrelookingforsci-enticinquiryandthescien-ticmethodtheyrelookingforenthusiasmcreativityhowdeepdidtheygointothetopicandjustgenerallyhowwelltheyputtheirin-vestigationtogetherCon-royexplained.Manyoftheprojectslinkedtowhatiscurrentlybeingtaughtintheclassroomwhileotherstudentspursuedquestionsarisingfromtheirobservationsoftheworldaroundthem.Onesuchproj-ectbyGrade8studentDes-tinySmorongcalledWhatsInsidelookedintothein-gredientsinenergydrinks.Somanyteensaredrink-ingthemaseverydaydrinksbuttheydontknowwhattheyreconsumingshesaid.Smorongfoundanalarm-ingamountofcaffeineandsugarinmanyofthebrandssheanalyzedandtheprojectEducationScienceGrade10studentDestinySmorongwinssilverinthe
