15TuesdayApril232013TeddyBearHospitalKidsofallagesbringyourteddybearstotheFortSmithTradeShowforacheckupandafullexaminationProvidedbyFortSmithHealthSocialServicesAuthoritySaturdayApril2710a.m.-2p.m.Thefacilityalsowantstoeventuallycreateanen-tirelynewandcategorizedsalvagearea.Rightnowwehaveamix-matchmethodforusersdroppingofftheirstuff.WewanttodesignatesectionslikeaspecificfurnituresectionandmonitorthisHouwelingsaid.Salvagingisahugecom-ponentofthefacilityandoneofthereasonsforahigherdiversionrateaccordingtoChrisGreencornthecitysactingdirectorofpublicworks.Approximately12percentornearly4000tonnesofthenon-hazardouswastethatenteredthefacilityin2010wasdivertedinad-ditiontobeveragecontain-ersdivertedfromlandllsthroughtheBeverageCon-tainerRecyclingProgram.Peoplecomeoutoftherewithsomeprettynicestuff.ItsafairlydominantthinginYellowknifeculturethathasbeengoingonforalongtime.IknowpeoplethathavefurnishedtheirentireapartmentswithitemsfromthesalvagecellshereGre-encornsaid.AccordingtoGreencornanumberofexistingprogramexpansionsarealsoonthefacilitysagenda.Werelookingatexpand-ingourcontaminatedsoilremediationpadthatstartedin2005wherewetakecon-taminatedsoil-maybesoilwithfuelspilledonit-andtreatitsoitcanbelandlledhydrocarbon-freehetoldTheJournal.Werealsoexploringacurbsiderecy-clingoptionandexpand-ingthepopularcompostingcomponent.Yellowknifeisinthemidstofputtingtogetheranoutlineforacity-widecompostingprogramafterthesuccessofthefouryear-oldcentralizedcompostingpilotprojectlo-catedonthesolidwastefa-cilitysiteGreencornsaid.Over765tonnesoffoodandyardwastehavebeendivertedsincethecom-postingplantopenedsav-ingthelandllanestimated144000.Theoldlandllstartedin1974asanunlinedhole-in-the-groundstyledumpwithuncontrolledburninguntil1990canbecappedoffei-therbyanengineeredclaylinerfollowedbyalayerofsandandanallayeroftop-soilorbyasphalt.Apotentiallocationfortheexpandedcompostingpilesisontopoftheoldlandllonceithasbeencappedoff.Thiswouldlimittheamountoflandweretak-ingupforwasteHouwel-ingsaid.Thecompostcanstillbeturnedontheasphaltanditcanbeengineeredsothatanydrainageorleach-ateproducedbythecompostwouldbecaughtinacon-tainmentareaandtreatedappropriately.Thenewlandllhasanexpectedlifespanofveyearsbasedoncitycalcu-lationsandhasbeeninusesinceJanuary2012.Constructionwasteistheonlymaterialstillgoingintotheoldlandllthepurposeofgradingpriortofinalcapping.cilityonbrinkofchangeobecappedoffovernexttwoyearsPhotosDonJaquePatrickKaneSolidWasteFacilitysupervisorCarlGrabkeoverseesaloadoffreshtrashbeingdroppedoff.Heavyequipmentlikethisbulldozershiftandpackdownlayersofgarbagetomakethemostofthelandllspace.Salvagersarenottheonlyonessiftingthroughgarbageatthelandll.Featheredscavengersalsohuntoutjuicypiecesoftrashfromthecompressedmounds.Thelandllfeaturesadesignatedsectionforelectronicwaste.In2012thefacilityshipped26metrictonnesofe-wastetoEdmonton.kingforhiddentreasures.
