HealthWellnessSexualHealth21TuesdayApril232013FortSmithisproudtobepartoftheeducationcentreoftheNWT.TheTownofFortSmithCongratulatestheAuroraCollegeGraduatingClassof2013GoodlucktoallofyouThebachaBusinessDevelopmentServicesBusinessLearningSessionsRegisterforFREEat872-279524hourspriortoyourselectedsessionMay1930am1100amMay1100pm400pmMay2100pm200pmMay8930am1130amMay8100pm300pmMay9100pm300pmMay14930am1130amMay15930am1130amMay16130pm330pmMay22930am1200pmMay23630pm800pmMay28930am1130amMay29130pm400pmMay30130pm300pmThePowerofEmailSocialMediaMarketingMarketing101BankingBasicsfortheNewBusinessCommunicateforSuccessHowDoYouKnowYoureMakingAnyMoneyHowtoIncreaseClientReferralsandSalesAccountingandTaxforSmallBusinessCreatingandSustainingMoreRavingFansPromotionsCreatingBuzzforYourBizSmallBusinessBookkeepingandPayrollAdvertisingDosandDontsCreatingEngagingOnlineContentLow-CostStrategiesforPowerhouseProfitsBuildingYourBusinessonCustomerReferralsFocusgroupstohelpoutfrontlineHIVworkersByRENEFRANCOEURAresearchprojectfromtheCanadianPublicHealthAssociationCPHAhasar-rivedintheNorthtocollectinputfrommoreruralandre-motelocationsaboutsexualhealthriskandneedsafterrunninginvemajorcitiesacrossthecountryoverthepastyear.TheprojecttitledTheDe-velopmentofCoreCompe-tenciesforHIVPreventionisfundedbythePublicHealthAgencyofCanadaandmadeitsNortherndebutwithafocusgroupatAuroraCol-legesThebachacampusinFortSmithlastMonday.Throughtheseopen-dialoguenon-judgmentalgroupdiscussionstheprojecthopestocollectinformationonthepublicsunderstandingofHIVandsexuallytrans-mittedandbloodborneinfec-tionsSTBBIsanddeterminewhatneedsarenotbeingmetbypublichealthworkersforthoseatrisk.Fromthistheprojectaimstobuildasetofpopulation-speciccorecompetenciesorresourcesforpublichealthorganizationsandfrontlineworkers.Thesecompeten-cieswilladvancefrontlineworkersskillsinhandlingsensitivesexualhealthcasesparticularlythoseinvolv-ingHIV.Theprojectalsocallsfortheestablishmentofana-tionalreferencegrouptoprovideoverarchingguid-anceandadvice.Theassociationfeltliketherewasagreaterneedfortrainingforfrontlinework-erswhenitcametotreat-ingnotonlythosealreadywithHIVoranSTIbutalsothoseatriskofcontractingoneofthesediseasessaidJessicaDuttonresearchandoutreachcoordinatorwiththeSouthSlaveResearchCentreoftheAuroraRe-searchInstitute.Thesefocusgroupsallowthosecompetenciestobebasedonwhatpeoplesexperi-enceshavebeen.DuttonledthefocusgroupalongwithPerticeMofttmanagerofhealthresearchprogramswiththeNorthSlaveResearchCentrewhotooknotes.Whileonlyvepartici-pantsshowedupinFortSmiththerewasstillalivelydiscussionabouttheskillsandknowledgethatfrontlineworkersandserviceprovid-ersshouldhavetoproperlycareforpeoplewithoratriskofcontractingHIVandotherSTBBIs.Ithinkitdidexactlywhatitwassupposedtodobe-causeitcollectedtheideasimpressionsandexperiencesofthepeoplewholivehereDuttonsaid.ShealsonotedfocusgroupsintheNWTwillhelpdiver-sifytheproject.ItwillcreateasnapshotoftheNorthfortheprojectandmaybetheCPHAwillwanttonarrowtheirfocusandre-leaseasetofcompetenciescateredtotheNorthbecauseitisdifferenthere...Relation-shipbuildingishugewhereasinthecitythereisalotmoreanonymity...andweknowandwehearditagaininthegroupdiscussionhowrelationshipsbetweenclientsandcarepro-vidersareveryimportanttotheoverallqualityofcare.ThegroupalsotouchedonanotherkeyissueCPHAwantstobringtothetableindevelopingcompetenciesunderstandingthesocialde-terminantsofhealth.AccordingtoCPHAthesedeterminantsincludeabroadrangeofsocialandeconomicfactorssuchasincomeed-ucationsocialsupportnet-worksgendercultureex-periencesofhomophobiaandracismalongwiththephysicalenvironmentandbiologicalandgeneticfac-torswhichcanallincreasethevulnerabilityofindivid-ualstoHIVandothercom-municablediseases.CPHAhasfoundthatfrontlineworkersandcareprovid-ersnditchallengingtoknowhowtoaddressthesefactorswhichpromptedtheproject.Launchedlastyeartheproj-ecthastargetedfocusgroupsinVancouverSaskatoonOt-tawaMontrealandHalifax.MofttwasapproachedlastmonthinregardstobringingittotheNWT.Theywantedtoextendthisprojecttomoreruralandremotecommunitiestoen-surethecompetenciesapplytoeveryoneMofttsaid.TheprojecthasrelevanceintheNWTduetotheterritoryreportingthehighestrateofgonorrheaandsecondhighestrateofchlamydiainCanadain2010whentherewere867casesofchlamydiaand215casesofgonorrhea.Plansareunderwayforad-ditionalfocusgroupsoverthenextmonthinYellowknifeBehchokoandInuvikDut-tonsaid.TheprojectisnotexpectedtoruninNunavutorYukon.PhotoReneFrancoeurJessicaDuttonresearchandoutreachcoordinatorwiththeSouthSlaveResearchCentreoftheAuroraResearchInstituteisrunningaseriesoffocusgroupsacrosstheNWTtohelpdevelopresourcesforfrontlineHIVworkers.
