18TuesdayApril302013NorthernersRangersArtsCultureFilmByRENEFRANCOEURFiveJuniorCanadianRangersfromTulitarepre-sentingTeamNWTcompetedintheRangers5thNationalMarksmanshipChampion-shipatValcartierGarrisonthearmedforcesbaseinQue-becCitylastweek.ItwasthersttimeagroupofyoungRangersaged14-17fromtheSahtuhamlettookpartinthecompetitionjoinedbytwootherNorthernteamsfromGjoaHaveninNunavutandCarcrossinYukon.Theychallengedover50otherrieenthusiastsfrom13teamsacrossthecountryinaseriesofrelayeventsmeasur-ingtheirshootingaccuracy.ItsactuallythersttimeJuniorRangersfromanyofthesethreeNortherncom-munitieshavecompetedinthischampionshipSharonLowtheofcercommand-ingNorthernJuniorRangerssaid.TheyareallwonderfulshootersandrepresentingtheNorthwell.TeamNWTplacedtenthoverallwithatotalof2158points.Yukonsteamplacedfourthoverallinthechampionship.ChyanneSpennerfromCar-crossplacedsecondinthetopshotindividualcategorywithatotalof703outof880points.AnotherNorthernwin-nerincludedCharlieKogvikfromTeamNunavutwhowonbronzeinthetraditionalskillsshootinggame.Thechampionshipisthefinalstageoftheseasonsmarksmanshiptrainingpor-tionofthecommunity-basedJuniorRangerprogrames-tablishedin1996toprovidemeaningfulandstructuredactivitiesforyoungpeopleinisolatedcommunitieswhilestillpromotingtraditionallifestylesandcultures.Marksmanshipisaninte-gralpartoftheprogramandbuildsselfdisciplineandcondenceLowsaid.Itin-creasestheirshootingskillswhichisveryrelevantintheNorthforsustenancehuntingsotrainingandeventslikethisarealsoimportantbecausetheypolishtheircapabilitiestoprovidefortheirfamiliesastheygetolder.Theteamseachconsist-ingofveshootersandonecoachfacedoffinanumberofrelayswheretheyhadap-proximatelyanhourtohitallofthetargetssaidStephenWattonthepublicaffairsrepresentativefor1CanadianRangerPatrolGrouphead-quarteredinYellowknife.Theres11differentshoot-ingcompetitionsinclud-ingonebasedontraditionalskills.Theyarejudgedontheiraccuracytohitthetar-getsfromthepronekneel-ingsittingandstandingpo-sitionshesaid.InadditiontotherelaysRangerstookpartinzeroinginexercisesandpracticeshootswiththeirDaisyairries.Iveneverbeenthisfarfrommycommunity.ItsabitscaryyesandbigShaunaEtchinelle16ofTulitasaid.Butthetargetshereareeasytohittheyrecloserthantheonesbackhome.Etchinellesaidshewasin-spiredtojointheJuniorRang-ersafterafriendsignedup.Myfavouritepartisjusttheshooting.Ivebeenshootingforacoupleyearsnow.Igohuntingwithmydadhetaughtmeshesaid.OtherTulitaparticipantsincludedAlannaBernarde15JaredEtchinelle14DevonEtchinelle14andShannonMcPherson12.ThecompetitionalsoaimstoprovidevaluableexposuretotherestofCanadaformanyoftheyouthraisedinremotelocationsandtheopportunitytomeetnewpeople.Itsalwaysfuntobringteamstogetherlikethisbe-causeyoucanseethembe-comemorecondentandtheypracticehardandtheyseehowgoodtheyareLowsaid.Theboostincondencepro-vokesmoreinteractionwiththeotherkids.OneRangerwastellingmehewassittingwithagroupandtheywereallsharingstoriesaboutdifferentanimalsintheircommunitiesandtheirhuntingstyles.Sotheyreallylearnaboutdif-ferentpartsofnotonlytheNorthernculturesbutalsostraightacrossCanada.ThechampionshipranApr.23-25.Therearecurrentlymorethan3400JuniorRangersin125remoteandisolatedcom-munitiesacrossCanada.TulitasJuniorRangerszeroinonQuebecCityPhotoStephenWattonTeamNWTstrikesaposewiththeirDaisyairriesattheRangers5thNationalMarksmanshipChampionship.LefttorightShannonMcPhersonShaunaEtchinelleDevonEtchinelleJaredEtchinelleandAlannaBernarde.ByRENEFRANCOEURAnewdocumentarydelvingintopastandcurrentrelation-shipsbetweenNorthernersandtheircaninecounterpartsissettomakeitsworldTVpremierenextweekonthePetNetwork.NorthPawsanhour-longlmrevealshowdogsprevi-ouslytheonlyreliablemodeoftransportationintheNorthhavelosttheironce-crucialworkingrolesinNortherncommunitieswithtragicconsequencessuchasover-populationstatesthedocu-mentaryswebsite.ThelmspeakstohowwithfewanimalsheltersoperatingacrosstheNorthandashortageofveterinaryservices-makingspayingandneuteringachallenge-manydogsendupabandonedorkilled.NorthPawswassetinmo-tionbythesuccessful2011campaigntoraisefundsforYellowknifesrstselfcontainedanimalshelterwhichopeneditsdoorslastDecember.Iwasapartofthefund-raisingeffortfortheSPCAshelterandseeinghowthiscommunityofsuchpassion-atepeoplecametogethertomakethishappenagainstalltheoddswasreallyinspir-ingsaidlmdirectorandwriterNatashaDucheneofYellowknife.NorthPawsstartedoutjustabouttheshelterbutthenthemorewedugintotheideathemorewerealizedthatthewholestoryofdogsintheNWTisjustanincrediblelongerstorywithsucharichhistorythatwehadtotellitall.AyearinthemakingNorthPawstookDucheneandhercrewincludingproducersJudithKeenananddadDonDuchenepastYellowknifeandintoInuvikandAklaviktotalktootheranimalloverssuchasmodernmushersAndrewCharlieandScottMcQueenwhoarecarvingoutnewrolesforNortherndogsinthe21stcenturythroughracing.IwanteditbebalancedandsofaritsbeenreceivedprettywellDuchenesaid.AsDuchenesrstlmNorthPawspremieredtoaNWTdogsscamperintosmallscreenspotlightNewdocumentaryNorthPawspremieresonthePetNetworkYellowknifeaudienceear-lierthisyear.Duchenealsoasingersongwriterwho
