21TuesdayJune42013ByRENEFRANCOEURSevenNorthernerswhohaveworkedhardtosup-portandimproveeduca-tionintheNorthwestTer-ritorieshavebeeninductedintotheNWTEducationHallofFame.Over30superintendentsschoolboardtrusteesmen-torsteachersclassroomassistantsandcoacheshavebeeninductedsincethedepartmentofEducationCultureandEmploymentlaunchedtheHallofFamein2010.Healthyeducatedpeo-pleisagoalofthisassem-blyandthefoundationofahappyandsuccessfullifeMinisterofEducationCultureandEmploymentJacksonLaffertysaidinapressrelease.InducteestotheEducationHallofFamehaveallmadeposi-tiveandlastingimpressionsonthelivesofcountlessNWTresidentsandIwanttorecognizethemfortheircommitmentdiligencecreativityandpassionthatwewanteducationtoin-spireinusall.TheEducationHallofFameidentifiesandcel-ebratesoutstandingcom-mitmenttoeducationintheterritoryfromeduca-torsElderscustodiansadministratorsvolun-teerscoachesstudentsadvocatessponsorsandbusinesses.AselectioncommitteechoosesonenominationfromeachregionintheNWT.AseventhinducteeischosentoreceivetheMinistersChoiceAward.ClockwisefromtopleftBillGildayAnne-MiekeCameronHon.JacksonLaffertyJillTaylorBeverlyMasuzumiAndyNorwegianandMaryAdeleFlunkie.EducationHallofFamehonourspassionateNorthernersThisyearsinducteesareasfollowsJANIEJONESahighschoolteacherandthesupervisorofschoolsfortheBeaufortDeltaEducationCouncilinTuktoyaktukhasbeenteachingforover40years.ShehasworkedwithstudentsinNunavutandFortMcPher-soninvariousrolesincludingprincipalprogramsupportteacherandas-sistantsuperintendentbeforemovingtoTuktoyaktukin1993.BEVERLYMASUZUMIofFortGoodHopehasworkedtoimproveeducationalopportunitiesintheSahtufor10yearsbysittingonboththelocaleducationauthorityboardandtheSahtuDistrictEducationCouncilwhichshechairedforsixyears.MARYADELEFLUNKIEisthelongestservingteacherinWhati.Shehasspentthepast27yearsinstillinganappreciationandunderstandingoftheTlicholanguageinchildren.BILLGILDAYofYellowknifehasmadeanameforhimselfoverthepast25yearsasamusicianwithTheGumbootsbuthesalsohada40-yearteachingcareer.HetaughtinBehchokobeforemovingtoYellowknifetoteachatMildredHallSchool.HenowteachesatSirJohnFranklinHighSchool.GildaycreatedthecitysrstyouthchoirwhichperformedforQueenElizabethIIandalargemusicprogramatthehighschoolinclud-ingaconcertbandchoirandjazzband.EducationTeachersANDYNORWEGIANisanAboriginallanguagespecialistwiththeDehchoDistrictEducationCouncilinFortSimpsonworkingnonstopoverthepast24yearstorevitalizetheSouthSlaveylanguage.HealsoplayedanimportantroleindevelopingtheDeneKedecurriculumnowusedacrosstheNWT.ThiscurriculumallowsstudentsinkindergartenthroughtoGrade12tolearnabouttheDenerela-tionshipwiththelandthespiritualworldotherpeopleandtheirownidentities.JILLTAYLORofHayRiverhasworkedinboththeSahtuandSouthSlaveregionsasateacher.SheisdescribedasthedrivingforcebehindthedevelopmentofyouthprogramsinthecommunitysuchasLightsOnwhichprovidesyouthwithaplacetogoforrecreationalactivitiesonFridayandSaturdayevenings.SheisalsoheavilyinvolvedintheNotUsanti-drugcampaignandtheLeadershipandResiliencyprogramprovidinganalter-nativerelationship-basededucationforhigh-riskadolescents.ANNE-MIEKECAMERONfromYellowknifeisthisyearswinneroftheMinistersChoiceAward.Overher41-yearcareershebecameastrongadvo-cateforintroducingtheAlbertaAchievementTestsHonoursEnglishclassesadvancedplacementcoursesaFrenchimmersionprogramandanalternativeschoolprogramforNorthernstudentswhostrugglewithdaytimeschooling.ShealsofosteredtheexpansionofcourseofferingsattheAkaitchoTradesandTechnologyCentretheneartsdepartmentandthestudentadvisoryprogram.In2005shewasrecognizedasoneofthecountrysTopPrincipalsbyMacleansmagazine.ShenowspendshertimeteachingEnglishtorstandsecond-yearsocialworkandnursingstudentsatAuroraCollege.EducationCultureandEmploymentMinisterJacksonLaffertyawardsJillTaylorherplaceintheNWTEducationHallofFame.PhotoscourtesyofGNWT
