29TuesdayJune42013SportsRecreationArenaByRENEFRANCOEURAnewcommitteeinFortSmithisgoingtodoevery-thingitcantogetourkidsontheicethisyearafterthecommunitylostuseofitsarenaforthe2013-2014seasonduetoare.TheIceSurfaceStrategyCommitteecomprisedofthreetowncouncillorstheRecreationAdvisoryBoardandthearenassixmainusergroupsmetforthersttimelastTuesdaytodiscussthearenasclosureandalterna-tivesurfacesavailableintownforiceactivitiesthiswinter.ThisisavenuetotalkabouttheproblemofnothavingicebyThanksgivingthisyear.Itsnotreallyavenuetogiveintodiscus-sionaboutrenovatingorrebuildinganewarena.ThatwouldbeamorepublicprocesslatercommitteechairCouncillorKevinSmithsaid.InsuranceadjustorGregMerrithewfromArcticWestAdjustorsandstructuralengineerTimCartmellofSintraEngineeringoutofEdmontonalsomadeanappearanceatthemeetingtopresentanupdateonthearenasstatus.ThecauseofthefirewhichburnedforafewhoursonMay13beforeanyonenoticedisstillunderinvestigation.Thedamagedareaex-tendsfromthebathroomstothedressingroomsandincludestheboilerroom.Threeofthegluelami-natedbeamsthatsupportthestructureweredamagedbutCartmellsaidheisop-timisticthebeamscanberepairedandwillnothavetobereplaced.TherewasalotofsmokedamagesoitlooksworsethanwhatitisCartmelltoldthecommittee.HowevertherepairsareextensiveMerrithewwarnedincludingtheneed-edtogeteverythinguptocode.Thiswouldentailfixingroofdeckingre-shinglingtheentireroofrippingoutthebleachersandstartingfromscratchinstallinganewsprinklersystemcarryingoutsmokeremediationaswellasget-tingnewelectricalsystems.Therearenotoiletfacili-tiesrunningwaterorelec-tricityatthearenacurrently.Itsapublicstructurewehavecodecompliances.Wecantjusthireacontractorandsaygoforth.WeneedFortSmithdiscussesoptionsafterlossofcomingiceseasonEngineersaysdamagefromarenarecanberepairedbutcouldcostover1.6millionanelectricalplanbyanelec-tricalengineermechanicaldrawingsandamechanicalplanstructuraldrawings.Thenwehavetodrawupbiddocumentstobeabletogotocontract.ThisalltakestimeMerrithewsaid.Hisroughestimate-clas-siedasaclassDestimatebecauseitissoearlyintheinvestigation-fortheamountofrepairsis1.6million.TheofcialquoteforthecostofrenovationwillbeavailablebyearlyJuly.IcanalmostguaranteeyouitwillgooverthatMerrithewsaid.CouncillorDonWebbbroughtforthanideatoblockoffthedamagedareaandseeifitisthenstillpos-sibletousethearena.Theicesurfacetheiceplantandthezamboniroomhavenotbeencompromised.Alltheredamageisinthestandareahesaid.Therewouldbenoheatwaterorsewerbutatleastwedhaveourrink.Thecommitteedecidedtolookintothisoptionaswellasoptionsformul-tipleoutdoorrinkstenta-tivelysetupattheTrail-crossTreatmentCentreandbehindtherecreationcentre.Thereis250000availabletothetownfortemporaryrinksolutionsMerrithewsaid.Representativesfromalltheusergroupssaidtheyunderstoodtheymostlikelywillnotbeplayingonaregulatorystandard-sizedrinkwhichmeansspeedskatingmaybeoutofthequestionforFortSmiththisseason.IvealreadyhadkidstellmetheyaremovingsomewhereelseforschoolfortheseasontotrainespeciallywiththeArcticWinterGamescomingupFortSmithChamberofCommercepresidentJanieHobarttoldthecommittee.Thatsahugelosstoourcom-munity.Theseareourfutureleaders.Sowevegottogetsomesortofprogramminginortalktotheairlinessowecangivethemsomesortofoption.ThecommitteealsopassedamotionallowingothercommunitygroupsorrepresentativessuchastheChamberofCommerceandtheNWTsdepart-mentofMunicipalandCommunityAffairstositonthecommitteeiftheyexpressadesiretodoso.ThenextcommitteemeetingisscheduledforJune25.Inthemeantimeallusergroupswereaskedtoforwardadditionalinfor-mationtoJimHoodFortSmithssenioradministra-tiveofficeraboutthesizeofrinktheywouldliketoseeandhowmanyhourstheywouldrequireuseofitperweek.Hoodsaidhecanstartputtingtogetherquotesforoutdoorrinksandortemporarystruc-tureswiththisinforma-tion.nuvikstartslonghotsummerofballTheInuvikballseasonkickedoffSundawithtenteamllwillbeansinInuvedfothreesa500hurs-daysmberotourn21wasplannatkindofnuundupvoluostoldTheJourna.s.cusofattentionformanyplayersanhissummer.LeaguegameswillbescheyseachweekincludingSundaywith.SPORTS.tforMondaynight.WewanttoseeersturnoutforthatandthenwewillBRIEFSPhotoReneeFrancoeurSouthSlavecommunitiesjoininonYellowknifetrackmeetTheannualYellowknifetrackmeetattheWilliamMacDonaldSchoolonSaturdayenjoyedperfectweath-erinthelow20s.Itwasaverygoodday.WeluckedoutsaidMichaelHurstoneoftheorganizers.Alongwiththe285participantsasmallcontingentofspecial-Olympianswereonhandwhichwasarealcrowd-pleasernotedHurst.Theeventisnosanctionedandismoreforfunwithafocusonparticipation.ForthesecondyearparticipantsfromHayRiverandotherSouthSlavecommunitiesjoinedin.InuvikstartslonghotsummerofsoftballTheInuvikballseasonkickedoffSundaywith10teamsshowinguptostartthesummerleague.BallwillbeafocusofattentionformanyplayersandfansinInuvikthissummer.LeaguegameswillbescheduledforthreedayseachweekincludingSundaywithgamesat500700and900p.m.andTuesdaysandThursdaysat700and900.Therewillalsobeanumberoftournaments.Youthballstart-upforagesfourto21isplannedforMondaynight.WewanttoseewhatkindofnumbersturnoutforthatandthenwewillroundupvolunteersforcoachesorganizerJefferyAmostoldTheJournal.Yellowknifegolfsforcharityandfun-atannualtournamentTheNWTAboriginalSportCircleASCwillonceagainhosttheirannualcharitygolftournamentinYel-lowknifeonFridayJuly12insupportofKidsSportandwillbeafourpersonscramble.ASCexecutivedi-rectorGregHopfquippedthatFridayinthesummerisnotreallymeantforworkinganywaysobringyourwalletsandbepreparedtohaveagoodtime.TheYel-lowknifeGolfClubwillhostatleastadozentourna-mentsthissummerincludingtheuniqueCanadianNorthMidnightClassiconJune21and22.Iceusergroupshavecometoacceptthathockeyandskatingwillbedoneonanon-traditionalicesurfacethisseasonfollowingtheclosureofthearena.
