ateonthestateofamysteriousoilysheendetectedontheAtha-bascaRiver.Thatsubstancewasidenti-edThursdaymorningasnotpetrochemicalinnaturebutlikelytheproductofablue-greenalgaebloomcausedbyrecord-highwaterlevelsandtemperaturesintheFortMcMurrayregion.Bevingtonsaidtheinci-dentwhichcausedenoughworryinthecommunityofFortChipewyantoshutdownwaterintakeatthelocaltreat-mentplantisagoodexam-pleofpoormanagementofwaterwaysbygovernment.IthinkwhatstruckmewiththatissuewashowAl-bertaEnvironmentdidntunderstanditandyetitwaskillingfishandwaspotentiallyhazardoustohumanlifeaswellBev-ingtonsaid.YetittooktheFirstNationstonoticeittobringittotheiratten-tionandatfirstAlbertasaidthattherewasnoth-ingthere.SoIthinkonceagainitshowshowgovern-mentsarejustnotuptothetaskyetofprotectingthatriversystem.Theyneedtobemorevigilant.PhotoDeneNationEdmonton-StrathconaMPLindaDuncanpresentsherbilltoreinstatetheSlaveRiverundertheNavigableWatersProtectionActattheDeneNationalAssemblymeetingsonThursday.
