12TuesdaySeptember172013ByMARIACHURCHWithsummerholidayscomeandgonenewandreturningAuroraCollegestudentsatcampusesacrosstheNWTarehittingthebooks.CollegestudentshitthebooksafterorientationeventsTohelpstudentssettleintotheirnewliveseachofthethreemaincampusesAu-rorainInuvikThebachainFortSmithandNorthSlaveinYellowknifeheldorienta-tionevents.Allofourorientationsaregearedtowardshelpingstudentsdevelopasenseofcommunityoncampusandafamiliaritywiththecollegeandthecommunity.AlotofourstudentsarecominginfromthesmallcommunitiessothisisagreatchanceforthemSarahTilleycam-pusdirectoratYellowknifesNorthSlaveCampustoldTheJournal.Thisisoneofthefewtimesthatallofourdiffer-entprogramscaninteractsoitsgreatfortherstweekshesaid.ThisyeartheYellowknifecampusintroducedselfde-fenseworkshopsduringori-entationweek.Studentsfromallprogramswereencour-agedtotakepartasbothalearningexperienceandameetandgreetactivity.Withstudentswhocomefromthecommunitieswewanttomakethemawareofpersonalsafetywhenyoureinthecity-howtobeawareofyoursurroundingsandhandleyourselfTilleysaid.AttheThebachacampusorientationweekcontinuedwiththetraditionofholdingculturaleventssuchastheDenehandgamesdemon-strationandthefeedingofthereceremony.ThisisthesixthyearthatPeterPauletteoftheSmithsLandingFirstNationahandgamesplayerandinstructorwasinvitedbycampusstafftoholdaworkshop.HandgamesisoneofthebiggerpartsofourculturewhenwegettogetherPau-lettesaid.WegetstudentsfromupNorthwhodoplayitbackhomesoitsforthemtogatherandcometogether.GlennBourkecampusmanageratThebachasaidhefeltthisyearsorientationwentwellforhelpingnewstudentsfeelatease.Thatswhywehaveorienta-tiontotryandmakethemfeelmorecomfortablehesaid.InitialestimatesfromThebachashowanincreaseinstudentenrollmentatthecampusthisyear.OurresidencesarefullweactuallyhavewaitinglistsforourresidencesBourkesaid.KaraHendrieareturningstudentfromNormanWellssaidsheshappytherearemorestudentsaroundcampus.Itwillmaketheschoolmoreinterestingwithmorefacesshesaid.HendrieisinhersecondandlastyearoftheEnviron-mentandNaturalResourcesTechnologyprogram.Shesaidsheexpectsthisyearwillbemorechallengingbutsheslookingforwardtoit.AttheAuroracampusinInuvikorientationdaytitledTheSkystheLimitincludedeventssuchasmerchandisebingostreethockeyasoft-balltournamentandchil-drensgamesforstudentswithfamilies.EducationPost-SecondaryPhotosMariaChurchStudentsparticipateinademonstrationofDenehandgamesatThebachacampusinFortSmithfororientationweek.CherieStewartandFrancoisPauletteplaceofferingsinthereduringThebachasfeedingthereceremony.AuroraCollegeboardofgovernorschairSydneyOSullivanaddressesstudentsandstaffduringtheopeningceremoniesatThebachacampus.PhotoJayneMurrayTheTownofFortSmithwillberunningafallclean-upfromSeptember23282013withahazardouswasteround-uponSaturdaySeptember28attheRecCentreparkinglotfrom1000a.m.400p.m.ResidentsmayhavelargeitemsandyardcleaningdebriscollectedbytheTownfromthecurbsideonly.Thepickupfeeis40perlocationandmustbeprepaidatTownHall.Tippingfeesatthelandfillsitewillbewaivedforhouseholditemsduringthistime.TherewillalsobeabackyardcompostersaleattheRec.CentreonSeptember28from1000a.m.400p.m.TheTownofFortSmithAnnualFallClean-upSeptember23282013AsofSeptember92013theTownofFortSmithwillnolongeraccepte-wasteRTLRECYCLINGBOTTLEDEPOTwheretheywillbecollectedfreeofchargeandsenttoane-wasterecyclingfacilityinEdmonton.
