10TuesdayOctober12013ArtsCultureVisualArtsLOGOcontestAlogofortheMTISCULTURALINSTITUTE300prizeSubmitlogotoNWTMtisNationFortSmithNTP.O.Box720X0E0P0DeadlineforsubmissionsisSeptember132013.AlogofortheHAYRIVERMTISGOVERNMENTCOUNCIL300prizeSubmitlogotoHayRiverMtisCouncilHayRiverNT10IndustrialDr.X0E0R6CALLINGALLLOGODESIGNERSPleasesubmitlogodesignstothebelowcontactinfoprovided.DesignsshouldbeMtisculturalthemed.HayRivercelebrateshistorythroughartBySCOTTCLOUTHIERHayRivershistoryservedasinspirationforanartshowthispastweekendattheHayRiverMuseum.OrganizerAnneBou-dreaucameupwiththeideaofacollaborationbetweenHayRiversartistsandthelocalmuseumasawaytocelebrateCultureDays.IdontrecallsomebodydoingthatBoudreausaid.Lookingatanoldpieceandinterpretingit.LocalartistsfirstmetinlateAugusttodiscusstheshowandthensoughtoutinspirationfromtheexhib-itsandartifactsondisplayatthemuseumeachchoos-ingonepiecetointerpretfortheshowcase.AsthiswasthefirstsuchcollaborativeshowBoudreausaidthepartic-ipationnumberswerenotquitewhatshehadhopedforbutsheisplanningtorevivetheideanextyearandgiveartistsmoretimetoprepare.ArtistswhocontributedtotheshowwereChrisRob-sonJuliaTrennertGene-vieveClarkeCindyHaleyandBoudreauherself.Manydifferentmediawererepresentedfrompaintingtopenandinkbeadingandknitting.ItsinterestingtoseeeachartiststakeonthingsBoudreausaid.Itsgoodwhenashowhasacommonthemeandpeo-plecanworktowardsit.Boudreausaidshewantedtoinvolvethemuseuminanartshowtohighlightitsim-portancetothecommunity.PhotoScottClouthierArtshoworganizerAnneBoudreaudisplaysherinspira-tionpiecearockwithanembeddedfossilandherknit-tedinterpretation.FortChipauthordiscoverstruenamefamilyandselfArtsCultureLiteratureByRENEFRANCOEURWhatsinanameItsamatterclosetotheheartforRubiHelenShirley-SakeskaniporiginallyofFortChipewyanwhowasonceknownasRubiHelenGibotbe-foreshehaditlegallychanged.MydadonlyspokeCreeandhewouldsaysomethinglikeWearenotGibotsinourlanguagesaidSakes-kanipamemberofMikisewCreeFirstNation.Ididntre-allyknowwhathewastalkingaboutgrowingup.BeingintheresidentialschoolforsevenyearsitslikeabrainwashingandIdidntreallybelievehim.In2008shediscoveredherfatherFrancoishadbeenrightallalong.IdecidedtowriteabookaboutourstoryItwastherighttimeandIdecidedtondoutwhoIwaswheremypeoplecomefromtobeginajourneyofhealingandrecon-ciliationfromwhathadhap-penedintheresidentialschool-thecultureshock.SoIbeganresearchingthenameIdbeengivenalltheseyearsGibotSakeskanip56said.IwenttotheCatholicchurcharchivesinYellowknifeandIdiscoveredIwasnotaGibotbutaSakes-kanipandournamehadbeenchangedin1863.ItwasanemotionalrollercoasterrideforawhileaftertherevelationSakeskanipsaidShirleyishermarriedname.IcriedwhenIseenthename.Ibrokedown.IcouldntbelieveIhadntbelievedmydad.Iwasangryatthegovernment.ButIwasalsoexcited.IthoughtOhmygodwhoamISevenmonthsofresearchlaterwhichentailedplentyoftravellingtocombthroughli-brariesfromCalgarytoOttawasheunearthedagiantfamilytreelinkingbacktothenameSakeskanip-muchthankstondingFortChipsrsttreatypaylistfrom1899.IhadalotofrelativesIdneverknownaboutbecausewedbeendisconnectedfromthenamechangeandfromresi-dentialschoolssaidSakes-kanipatherapistwhorunsaprivatepracticeinLillooetBCandiscurrentlydoingherdoc-torateineducationalleadership.SakeskaniprecentlysolvedoneofthosemissinglinksafterreadingabouttheextensiveEvansfamilyreunioninFortSmithintheAug.27issueofNorthernJournal.TheEvansclantracesitslineagebacktoDavidMaskegonEvansfromManitobawhomarriedHelenSakeskanipGibotinFortChipin1885-bothhadtheirnameschanged.ShecalledupJulieLysofFortSmithanEvansfamilymemberwhoisbehindmuchofthegenealogycollectionsforthefamilyandthepairdiscov-eredtheywerelonglostcous-ins.LysevenownsacopyofSakeskanipsbookpickedupatthemuseuminFortChip.Itsalwaysamazingndingacousin.Genealogyislikeagiantpuzzleanditsallcom-ingtogetherLyssaid.Wefoundoutwereactuallythirdcousinsweshareagreat-greatgrandfather...IknowwellmeetsomedayandIlookforwardtothat.TheirgrandmotherthatHelenSakeskanipwasacousintomygrandfatherSakeskanipsaid.MygrandfathertheheadmanwasnamedThomasandhesignedthetreatyin1899.Hisfathermygreatgrandfa-therwasLazareSakeskanipthesonofSakeskanipwhofromwhatIvefoundoutmostlikelycameuptoFortChipandsettledtherefromthenorthernUnitedStatesintheearly1800s.AstohowherfamilynamebecameGibotShirley-Sakes-kanipsaidsheandherbrothershaveafewideas.Sakeskanipcamefromthesouth.HewasAssiniboinetheStonyFirstNations...WethinkmaybetheygotGibotfromthewaySakeskanippronouncedAssiniboine-likeAssini-botshesaid.TheresanothertheorytootherewasacampcooknamedPeterGibotinFortChiparoundthesametimesomaybetheyusedhislastnameforsomereason.SakeskanipandherbrotherErniehavebothrevertedtheirsurnamestotheoriginalformandfellowbrotherFrankisintheprocessofhavinghislastnamealsolegallychangedtoSakeskanip.MybrotherGeraldheisstillatrapperinFortChip-theonlyoneofusstillthere.HespeaksCreeandwasalwaysouttrappingwithDadsohehadheardournamebefore.HesaidthatswhatDadhadalwayssaidwasournameGeraldisstillaGibotbutIhopehechangesittooshesaid.SakeskanipwasraisedwithsixsistersandfourbrothersonherfamilystraplineintheLake
