NWTCoachingSymposiumbackonaftereightyearsSportsRecreationVolleyball22TuesdayOctober222013SportsRecreationCoachingByMARIACHURCHAfteraneight-yearhiatusSportNorthwillberun-ninga2013NWTCoach-ingSymposiumthismonthinanefforttoraiseinterestincoachingvolunteeringandofciatingwhilepro-vidingmuchneededtrain-ingandsupport.Certainlythereisanex-pensetodevelopingcoachesintheNorthanditsnotnec-essarilyaneasytaskRitaBertoliniorganizerwithSportNorthtoldTheJour-nal.Ithinkwehavealotofvolunteercoachesthatcom-mitalotoftimeintheNorthandarereallydedicatedtodeliveringtheirsport.CouldweusemoreAbsolutely.ThisisthefirstyearacoachingsymposiumintheNWTwillincludeastreamofsessionsgearedspeci-callytowardthosewhoof-ciatesports.Sessionsforofficialswillfocusonissuessuchasconictmanagementrelationswithcoachesde-cisionmakingandproblemsolvingthemodelforwhichwasrecentlydevelopedbyasportorganizationinQue-becandtranslatedforuseacrossthecountryBerto-liniexplained.Ourcoachingandvolun-teersymposiumhasalwaysreallycateredtocoachesandthosethatadministersports.Wereallyhaventhadany-thingspecicforofcialsinthepastsothisisafairlynewprogramevenoutofSportQuebec.Sowerere-allyexcitedthatwecanoffersomethingspecicshesaid.AllsymposiumsessionswillbedividedintooneoffourstreamscoachesCanadianSportforLifeofficialsandvolunteers.Overthetwo-daysympo-siumparticipantswillhavethefreedomtopickandchoosebetweensessionsandstreamsaccordingtotheirinterests.CarolynTaylorabio-mechanistattheCanadianSportInstituteOntarioandfutureperformancetechnol-ogyspecialistforthe2014SochiParalympicGameswillbeleadingseveralofthesymposiumscoachingsessionsincludingoneonusingnewtechnology.ThesessioncalledDontWorryBeAppywillfocusonsimplifyingcoachingthroughtheuseofcellphoneapplications.iPadsandiPhonesandandroidphoneshavechangedthewayIdomyworkanditssomethingthatcoachesareeasilyabletoapplywithintrainingsce-nariosandcompetitionsthemselvesTaylorsaid.TheNWTCoachingSymposiumwillbeherfirsttimeintheterritoryandTaylorsaidsheisexcitedtobringherspecializedexpertiseasabiomecha-nist-onewhoworkswithtechnologytounderstandandmaximizeathleticper-formance-totheNorthernsportcommunity.HopefullyIcanbringasnippetofthemostimpor-tantthingsthatIvefoundandthingsthathavebeenthemostapplicableshesaid.EvenworkingwithalotofhighperformancecoachesthosethatmakeittotheOlympiclevelarethosethathavenailedthebasicsandapplytheba-sicsinthebestmanner.Tomethatsthehugeimportancewhenworkingwithcoachesatanylevel.Aswellasprovidingtrainingandsupporttopar-ticipantsthesymposiumwillbeagoodwayforen-thusiaststonetworkintheNWTsportscommunityBertolinisaid.Itsanopportunitytobringtogetherallstakehold-ersinsportwhetheryoureateacherwhetheryouaresomeonedeliveringsometypeofrecreationprogramorevenadayhomepersonthereissomethingthereforeveryoneshesaid.ThesymposiumwillbeheldattheExplorerHotelinYellowknifeandrunOct.26-27.Formorein-formationandtoregistergoonlinetosportnorth.comour-programscoach-development2013-nwt-coaching-symposiumPresenterDonMcGavernleftisassistedbySportNorthsGaryBrennanatthe2005Coachingsymposium.PhotocourtesyofSportNorthYellowknifesSt.PatrickHighSchoolunder19girlsteamplaystowinattheweekendtournamentinFortSmith.YellowknifesSirJohnFranklinHighSchoolboysunder19teamcelebratesafterwinningthegoldmedalgameagainstthehometeamfromPaulWilliamKaeserHighSchool.StudentsocktoFortSmithforvolleyballtournyByMARIACHURCHFortSmithschoolsservedupahealthyamountofcom-petitionlastweekendwith44teamsfromacrosstheNWTparticipatingintheannualLawrieHobartMemorialVolleyballTournament.Itsbeenagreatweek-endAlKarasiukprinci-palofPaulWilliamKaeserHighSchoolinFortSmithandtournamentorganizertoldTheJournal.With33teamsfromoutoftownshowingupfortheweekendroughly350playerswerehousedinclassroomsofboththehighschoolandele-mentaryschoolinFortSmith.KarasiuklaughedwhenhesaidthatbySundaytheschoolshallwaysappearedtobefilledwithzombiestudentsnallycrashingafteraweekendofphysicalactivityandsocializingwithlittlesleep.Fatiguewasntanop-tionforthetopteamsofthetournamentSundaywhenthegoldsilverandbronzemedalgameswereplayed.Thisyeartheorganizersde-cidedtoorganizethenalsasbestofvesetsgivingeachgametwohoursofplay.YellowknifesSirJohnFranklinHighSchoolgirlsandboysteamsbothtookhomegoldintheunder15cat-egorieswhileYellowknifesSt.PatrickHighSchoolgirlswongoldinunder19andSirJohnFranklintookgoldinseniorboys.PWKkeptthegoldmed-alsathomefortheGrades67girlsandboysteamsaswellastheGrade8boysteamwhileHayRiversDiamondJennessSchoolwontheGrade8girlsgoldmedalgame.KarasiuksaidthatwhenitcomestosporttournamentsintheNorthitistypicalforteamstotravelforhourstoparticipateinaweekendcom-petitionasFortSmithsclos-estneighbourHayRiverisstill262kmaway.Foracommunityoursizeitsaprettybigeventhesaid.Peoplereallypulltogetherandpitchintoputiton.TheinvitationalvolleyballtournamenthasbeenhostedbytheFortSmithschoolsformorethan25yearsbutitwasntuntilseveralyearsagothatthetournamentwasof-ciallynamedafteritsfounderthelateLawrieHobartKara-siukexplained.Lawriestarteditandafterhepassedwethoughtitwastting.AsalifelongNortherneducatorandapersonwhowasinvolvedwithvolleyballandsportsitwasgoodtorechristenithesaid.Severaltweakstothetour-namentthisyearincludedclosingtheschoolstothepublicinordertominimizetrafc.Karasiuksaidtheout-of-towncoachesaswellasthejanitorialstaffwereveryap-preciativeoftheincreasedse-curityanddecreasedloitering.Playersandcoachesreceivedwristbandstodistinguishthemfromspectatorsandtherecre-ationcentresgymwaskeptopentothepublicasavenuetowatchgames.Thoughanadultsreccat-egoryisusuallyapartofthetournamentthisyearfo-cusedonlyonthestudentswhileaneweventsawanall-starcoachesgameheldonFriday.Wehadsomanypeoplewantingtoplaycoachesandkidsallmixedtogether.ThatwasahighlightandafunwaytoendthedayFri-dayKarasiuksaid.Ob-viouslythatsgoingtobeakeeper.PhotosPaulBannisterandMariaChurch
