23TuesdayOctober222013WeRememberIfyebreakfaithwithuswhodieWeshallnotsleepthoughpoppiesgrowInFlandersfields.willbepublishingourRemembranceDayspecialsectiononNovember52013.Weinviteyoutorememberthosewhosacrificedthemselvesforourfreedom.adsnorj.ca867.621.1818ByMARIACHURCHTheFortSmithMtisCouncilhasreceivedagov-ernmentgranttofundapro-gramthatwillseeeldersinFortSmithandthesurround-ingareaprovidedwithafreesupplyoffreshlyhuntedmeatthisfall.Fundingtothetuneof54000camefromtheGNWTdepartmentofHealthandSocialServicestosup-portthepilotprogramcalledTAASTEorTime-honouredAboriginalActionsSustain-ingTraditionalEating.KenHudsonpresidentoftheMtiscouncilandtheonespearheadingthepro-gramsaidthatwithalittlesuccesstheprojectcouldactasablueprintforothercom-munitiesintheNWT.Itbringshealthierfoodintothecommunityforel-derswhodontreallyhaveaccessHudsontoldTheJournal.AsyougetolderyoudonthuntasmuchasyoudidwhenyouwereyoungandyoudonthaveaccesstomeatThoseel-dersgrewuponthatmeatandwedliketocontinuetomakeitavailabletothem.Thefirstmeatwasgivenoutlastweektomorethan30elderswhoshowedupattheMtiscouncilssec-retariatbuildingwherethemeatisbeingstoredinfreezers.ThemeatincludedbuffalofromHudsonsmostrecenthuntingtripaswellasfishpurchasedfromHayRiver.Thisprogramsforev-erybodynotjustforMtisorstatus-itsforallelderssaidGordMcSwainaMtismemberwhowashandingoutmeatonThursday.McSwainestimatedthatFortSmithandthesurroundingareahascloseto800elderswhocouldaccessmeatthroughtheprogram.DaveBeamishwasoneoftheelderswhocameoutlastThursdaytopickupaportionofsh.Hesaidtheprogramisagoodidea.Lotsofpeopleneedituseitlikeithesaid.TAASTEisupholdingwhatHudsonexplainedisatraditioninAboriginalculturetogiveaportionofoneshuntingharvesttoel-dersthecommunity.Naturallywhenwedoanykindofhuntingweusuallyhandoutagoodportionofwhatwekilltoeldershesaid.Thepro-gramwillexpandonthattraditiontomakehealthymeatavailabletoeldersmorefrequently.WithsomefreezersaplacetostoreallthisstuffandcontributionsfromhuntersinthecommunitywecandistributethemeattoeldersonamoreregularbasisratherthanjustonceayearHudsonsaid.Theprogramalsohopestobringyouthinthecom-munityoutintothebushtolearnhuntingandsur-vivalskillsanaspectofAboriginalculturethatHudsonsayshasseenaworrisomedeclineininterest.Weallstartedfairlyyoungbutthekidsthesedaystheydonthaveasmuchinterest.ItsnicetointroducethesethingswhenkidsareyoungandseeiftheypickitupHudsonsaid.WeliveintheNorththereslotsofgamearound.Peopleshouldtakeadvan-tageoflivinginaplacelikethisanddevelophuntingskillsyoungandyoucancarryitthroughoutlife.Hudsonsaidwiththefundingavailablehehopesagroupcanbeformedtotakeyouthoutinthebushandteachthembasicssuchassettinguptentsshootingcleaningandcookingsmallgameandmakingbannockonastick.Afinalaspecttotheprogramwouldseegreen-housesbuiltattheNorth-ernLightsSpecialCareHometogiveeldersanop-portunitytocultivatetheirownfood.ThroughouttheprogramstafffromtheMtiscouncilwillbedocumentingtheac-tivitiesandplantocompilefootageintoashortvideo.FortSmithprogramfundstraditionaleatingforeldersHealthWellnessNutritionPhotoMariaChurchGordMcSwainlefthandsafreepackageofshtoelderDaveBeamishattheFortSmithMtisCouncilscabininFortSmith.
