EducationOnTheLand22TuesdayNovember122013ByMEAGANWOHLBERGStudentsgraduatingfromtheDechintaCentreforRe-searchandLearninglastWednesdayreceivedmorethanapieceofpaperfortheirDechintagradsbuildontraditioninmoderncontextPersonalandculturalgrowthstoriesaboundatfallprogramendaccomplishmentstakingwiththemasenseofindividualandculturalempowermentafterspendingsixweeksonthelandlearningpracticalandtheoreti-caltoolsfordecolonization.FourstudentscompletedtheirfallsemesterprogramlastweekwithacelebrationatKalemiDeneSchoolinNDilomeanttorecognizetheirgrowthandaccomplishmentsoverthelastmonthandahalfatBlachfordLakewheretraditionalland-basedactivitieslikehuntingshingandmoosehidetanningweremixedwithlecturesonindigenousself-determinationthehistoryofcolonizationre-searchmethodologiesandcre-ativewriting.Itwasreallylovelyre-allypositivestudentPeytonStrakeroriginallyfromCoteFirstNationinSaskatchewanbutnowlivinginYellowknifesaidofherrstexperienceatDechinta.IactuallywasraisedinawhitefamilysoIvebeenkindofdisconnectedfromwhatitmeanstobeanindigenouswomanin2013.Thatwaskindofwhatmademewanttogojustthedisconnect.IwasjustcuriousastohowamIcolo-nizedhowdoIdecolonizeThosecriticalandpersonalquestionswereattheheartoftheautumnsessionwithin-structorslikeIdleNoMorefounderTanyaKappoDeneelderFrancoisPauletteandartist-educatorJaneDragonamongmanyothersproddingstudentstoexplorewaysofliv-ingtraditionallyinthemodernworldbyteachingon-the-landactivitiesandstartingdiscus-sionsondecolonization.Alloftheseconceptsarechallengingatrsttostarttounderstandandusuallytheyrenotconceptsthestudentshavehadtheopportunitytodelveintomeaningfully.AtDechintawehavethecommunitytosup-portthatprocesssaidMan-deeMcDonaldwhoseroleasteamleaderatDechintaseesherprovidingpersonallogis-ticalandacademicsupporttothestudents.McDonaldsaidshewasabletoseeeachstudentprogressuniquelybutnoticedageneralincreaseinself-assurednessoverthesixweeks.Reallyeachweekwasahugeincreaseincondenceforallofthemfromspeakinginclasswhenwehadlecturesandgoingforitwiththebushskillsjustpickingupashgoingdowntothewaterandcleaningitoffshesaid.Despitepeoplebringingdif-ferentlevelsofexperiencetothetableMcDonaldsaidthegroupfoundwaystousethosediffer-encestosupportoneanother.Wheneveryonecomesfromsuchdifferentbackgroundscol-lectivelywehaveahugebaseofknowledgetodrawfromtodoalltheworkandlearningthatwehavetodotogethershesaid.SamMantlaofGametiwasoneofthestudentswithexist-inghands-onexperiencepar-ticipatingintraditionalbushwww.auroracollege.nt.caBookkeepingBasicsforSmallBusinessesLearnthebasicsformanagingtheAuroraCollegeinpartnershipwithIndustrydaycourseBookkeepingBasicsforSmallBusinesses.ThecourseistailoredforsmallbusinessesandwilltakeyouthroughtheWhenSaturdaySundayNovember23-24WhereThebachaCampusAuroraCollege50ThecrewofstudentsprogramstaffeldersandinstructorsdepartfromanotherfallsemesterlearningonthelandattheDechintaCentreforResearchandLearning.PhotoErinFreeland-Ballantyneactivitieswhodecidedtopur-suetheprogramtobothboosthisacademiccredentialsandgivehimsomeadditionalreal-worldexperience.Hesaidtheexperiencehasgivenhimastrongerunder-standingofwhoheisasaTlichopersonandwherehetsintotheworldespeciallythankstotheseveralelderswhowereonsiteforthesixweekstopassontheirteachings.HavingtheelderstheretogroundusformetheywerelikethecentreofourprogramMantlasaid.WheneverIneededhelpdoingsomethinglikecuttingshorjusteventalkingortellingstoriesitmademefeellikeeverythingwasgoinggreateverythingisne.Justhavingthemaroundallthetimewasthebest.Strakeralsoexpressedherthankstotheeldersforbeingonhandandprovidingawealthofknowledge.Itkindofchangedthevibeatcampwiththeeldersbeingtheretherewasagentlenessandadifferentunderstandingshesaid.Theyweresopatientwithusjustsupergentleandverypositiveandgaveusveryexplicitfulldisclosureoftheirexperienceswithcolonizationanddecolonizationandwentintodetailaboutalltheirper-sonalresidentialschoolexperi-enceswhichhumanizesyouracademicexperience.Dechintaisaland-basedUniversityofAlberta-ac-creditededucationalinstituteledbyNorthernleadersex-pertseldersandinstructorswithcoursesopentopeopleofalleducationalandculturalbackgrounds.Applicationsarenowbeingacceptedforwinterspringse-mesterwith10spotsopen.Formoreinformationvisitdechinta.ca.Reallyeachweekwasahugeincreaseincondenceforallofthemfromspeakinginclasswhenwehadlecturesandgoingforitwiththebushskillsjustpickingupashgoingdowntothewaterandcleaningitoff.MandeeMcDonaldDechintaCentreforResearchandLearning
