ccusedofmonthsagowhichhedeniedoverandoverwithoutrightlies.Hecalledmembersofthemediamaggotsandverminat-temptingtodiscreditindividualjournaliststosavehimself.Thenaturalreactionfromanyreporterinvolvediscontempt.Yetthatdoesnotgivelicensetopursueanindividualtothepointofviolation-whichishowmanypeopleseethetreatmentofFord.Fordsperformanceinfectsthereputationofallpoliticianswhoaccordingtonumer-ousopinionpollsthepublicholdsinlowestesteem.ThemediainTorontopursinghimlikeapackofhungrywolvesaresimilarlydemeaningthereputationofalljournalists.TrudeauandMulcairtakealessonMorethananythingelseCanadiansareconcernedabouttheeconomy.Anypoli-ticianwhocanconvincinglysaytheycansustainarobusteconomicperformancehasachancetowinthenextfederalelection.ItisnotagoodtimeforConservativesinCanadawiththescandalousbehav-iorofTorontosMayorRobFordandthefallfromgraceofthreehighproleCon-servativeSenateappointees.ThefederaloppositionischippingawayattheHarperConservativeshopingfordeathbyathou-sandcutsyetsupportforthegovernmentremainsrelativelystrong.Canadiansstillseethemasthebestoptiontopilotthenationduringstormyeconomictimes.TheNewDemocratsandLiberalscon-tinuetodenethemselvesintermsofhowbadtheConservativesare.Thatisnotenough.Theyneedtoofferaviablecrediblealternativetowinmassappeal.JustinTrudeauisnallyaLiberalleaderthepublicrespondstoafterlacklusterperformancesbythelastthree.Thedar-lingofthemomentTrudeauspollingishighbutacultofpersonalitywillnotbeenoughtowithstandthechallengesofanelectioncampaign.TheLiberalsneedtoshowstrengthintheteamthatbackshimwhileofferingcrediblesolutionsthatimproveonwhattheHarperConserva-tivesaredoing.TheNDPcomparativelyfreshandcleanareunscathedbytheSenatescandalsincetheyhaveneverhadtheabilitytomakethoseappointments.Theyshouldberipetotakeoverleadershipbutbeingcleanisnotenoughdespitetheiroffer-ingofawell-groomedgovernmentinwaiting.Thetrustoftheelectoratewilleludethemuntiltheyshedthereputa-tionforunbridledspendingandgrowingbiggovernment.ToreachthebrassringTomMulcairhastousetheFword-scalresponsibility.Unlesstheycon-vinceCanadianstheycanmanagetheeconomywellnoNDPerwilleverbeprimeminister.FriendsgatheredforasumptuouspotlucksuppertocelebrateDoraJones95thbirthdayattheAnglicanChurchHallinFortSmithlastWednesdaynight.FormerNWTCommissionerTonyWhitfordwhoinhisyoungerdaysworkedwithDoraslatehusbandRonJonesattheNTPowerCorp.ewdownfromYellowknifetojointhecelebration.WhileshewaswaitingtoblowoutthecandlesonhercakeDoraquietlycondedastoryofherbirth.Shesaidbackthenawomanhadtostayinhospitalfortwoweeksaftergivingbirth.Iwasbornin1918andwhenwewereinhospitalthewarended.Theannouncementcameandpeopleranintothestreetscelebrating.Itwasabigpartyandmymotherwantedjoininbutshewasntallowed.Iwasntverypopularshesaidwithatwinkleinhereye.PhotosDonJaque
