LoveatfirstsightfornewYKChamberdirectorNorthernersOntheJob15TuesdayFebruary42013Nov.171946-Feb.42013RoyFilbyInlovingmemoryForeverlovedandmissedJayneJonathanStephenIzzyHarmonyMarcelRowanByMEAGANWOHLBERGAllittookwasonetriptoYellowknifelastsummerforDeneenEverettthenewexecutivedirectorofYellow-knifesChamberofCom-mercetofallheadoverheelsinlovewiththecity.IhadactuallyjustcometoYellowknifetodosomecampingandsometourismthingsandmyboyfriendandIcameupandfellinlovewiththecity.Prettymuchimme-diatelyafterthatwestartedthejobhuntEverettsaid.Itdidnttakelongforthefriendlyfatestoalignopen-ingupherdreampositionintheNorthandallowinghertomakethejumpfromherpreviouspostasmanagerofthePeaceRiverandDis-trictChamberofCommercewhereshehadbeenworkingforthepastyearandahalf.Shejumpedintothehot-seatonJan.20andhashitthegroundrunningalreadyleadingseveralnewcom-municationsinitiatives.Thechamberwillnowbeissuinganewbi-monthlynewslet-termakingitsdebutattheendofFebruary.EverettisalsopushingfullsteamaheadonsocialmediaforthechamberhavingrecentlylaunchedapremiumLinkedInprolefortheorganizationandisaimingtoincreaseactivityonthechambersFacebookpageandTwitteraccounttoattractmembersandkeepthebusinesscommunityawareoftheirongoinginitiatives.Werehopingtoincreaseourpresenceonline.Werealsogoingtobeupdatingourwebsiteshesaidaspartofthechambersrebrandingprocess.Thoughitsonlyhersec-ondweekonthejobEver-etthasalreadypinpointedcertainareasofconcernaroundwhichshewantstohelpsupportbusinessessuchasattractingandretainingemployeesanissueshehasalreadyfoundtobehugeinYellowknife.TheotherfocalpointforEverettisincreasingtheben-etsavailabletochambermemberswhetheritsmem-ber-to-memberdiscountsmorenetworkingopportu-nitiesorwaystopromotethelocalbusinesseshereinYellowknifeshesaidbothtodrawinmoremem-bersandincreasethevaluefortheonesthatarealreadymembers.Everettrstmadethemoveoutwestafterherlawyerboy-friendgotanewjobinthesmallnorthernAlbertatown.DespitebeingarecentgradfromMountSaintVincentUniversityinHalifaxwithaBachelorofScienceitwasinPeaceRiverthatsheac-cidentallystumbleduponhercalling.IwasreallyinterestedinsciencessoItookpsy-chologyandbiologysheshared.ThenImovedtoPeaceRiveranddiscoveredmypassionforpublicrela-tionsandeventplanningandeconomicdevelopmentkindofcamealongwiththataswell.Ivejustcontinuedtogrowthoseskillsandreallygrowthepassion.IreallylovewhatIdidinPeaceRiverandsofarIloveithere.EverettsaidshereallyenjoyedorganizingeventsaroundSmallBusinessWeekthetradeshowemployershowcasesjobfairsandlocalbusinessawardsinPeaceRiveralongwiththeadvo-cacysideofthings.PeaceRiveralsobecamehergatewayintotheNorth-ernwildernesswhichwouldultimatelysealthedealwithYellowknife.MyboyfriendandIareveryoutdoorsypeoplesowereallylikethatYellow-knifecaterstothatshesaid.Yougetkindofaruralcitysoithasalloftheameni-tiesandtheservicesthatyouwouldwantinacitybutyoucandrive15minutesandjuststartwalkinginthewoods.ThechamberhasitsMay-orsLuncheoncominguponFeb.13attheExplorerHotelwhichwillserveasanop-portunityforthebusinesscommunitymunicipalgov-ernmentandresidentsaliketonetwork.PhotocourtesyofDeneenEverettDeneenEverettthenewexecutivedirectorofYellowknifesChamberofCommerceislookingforwardtobothhelpingthecitysbusinesscommunityandhavingsomeoutdoorNorthernadventures.cascadegraphicsNewYearNewLook.Wemayhavechangedourlookbutwestillofferallthequalityproductsandservicesyouareusedtoplusmore.
